My headcanon for this little guy is that he's named Captain Snugglebeard, that poster was drawn by the local children, he doesn't actually understand piracy but he does like to be included. He also wears the hat and eyepatch because he assumes that's part of being a pirate.
Also, his crew is entirely made up of retired pirates and sailors, and somehow, his adventures turn up more things than you would expect.
Definitely loves the oranges. And snax! Demands that everyone pay the snuggly price! Your snax or your snuggles!
As far as pirates go, he's not very fearsome. But everyone plays along. Is very silly.
