cc . )___\\ Juneteenth is the day in the USA when Slavery was, on paper, officially outlawed. But, while that itself is a happy thing, it's also important to remember that that wasn't the end. Slavery continued in many states months, even years later, and slavery still persists in the US through the prison system of which 6% of incarcerated people are wrongly convicted. 56% of that population are either black or hispanic, and 37% the total population are mentally ill. And nearly 60% of children in the foster care system are of color.
cc . )___\\ People of color are still afraid, still struggling, still can't trust the government to treat them fairly, and many still face discrimination in their every day lives. So although, yes, Juneteenth is a day to celebrate don't let that make you forget that there is still a lot of work to be done to make the US and the world a safe place for everyone in them.
cc . )___\\ I know it feels impossible a lot of the time. But I promise you it isn't. We've done it before throughout history, over and over and over again things have improved from how they were even if things got worse for a while.
