One great problem with the internet and the 24 news cycle is that it makes it necessary to fill an endless void with "new" stuff. News reporting is hard, slow, and expensive. Opinion journalism is cheap, flexible, and self-generating. It teases the prospect of filling a bottomless cavern and offers immediate gratification to viewers seeking "the inside dope." The narrative matters, not the truth. The political media have their own needs, and creating an informed citizenry isn't one of them.
