Those are the things that give me doubt laid bare, I’m not going to deny them

However.

Compared to what was shown this season, these are all so minor and I’m gonna show you why. Now that those doubts are out there, let me lay a few reasons why we should have hope:

1. This buildup was for a reason

The show spent nearly 6 episodes dedicated to building up the relationship between Lotor and Allura through so much romantic subtext. Voltron doesn’t like to waste time (sometimes hurting the show imo, like skipping Keith’s galra reveal or when they first initially met Lotor in person) so the fact that they spent all this time on Lotor and Allura spending time together, and emphasizing that they spend it alone, is remarkable in itself. There was such an emphasis on hand holding (the camera zoomed in each time) and going off alone together in several different episodes, which is incredibly romantic. The missions themselves were also very romantic, which brings me to my next point,

2. Sharing personal history

Lotor practically told Allura everything about himself, and as of now, he is very genuine towards them and I don’t believe he plans on betraying them, or else we would get sneaky smirks on the side. He told her about his mother, who is dear to him and inspired his research, and took her to her/Haggar’s lab because he trusts Allura with this very personal part of himself. He told her how he was exiled and talks about how he respects Alfor so much. In return, Allura basically broke down and revealed her deepest insecurities we knew were there since episode 1 when she talked to alfor’s AI about not being able to “be” him. Getting rejected by the red lion in s3 didn’t help either. But Allura never shared these concerns with anyone. Not Coran, not Keith, not Shiro and not lance. All these people she’s spent so much time with, she felt she couldn’t open up to about this deep insecurity. But then she chooses Lotor. She even cries in front of him, showing vulnerability she has never shown to anyone else

3. Spending time alone together

Allura and Lotor went off on their own quite a bit in just 6 episodes, and there were romantic inclinations in every scene. All the hand holding, soft gazes and smiles, words of support, both being chosen by the white lion, believing in each other unwaveringly. Even the places they spent alone together were romantically colored, and according to the latest panel, color symbolism DOES matter. No ship has had this much romantic subtext since hunay, and I would argue this is even more romantic.

4. Allura trusts him

Why have Allura go through two arcs of struggling to trust galra just to do something to cancel it out? She had a very hard time adjusting to keith’s galra reveal and it took her a bit of time (though less than with keith) for Lotor as well. so this goes backwards for her character arc and would be pointless. If anything, she’s learned how the galra have not only oppressed other worlds, but also themselves, and Lotor is a good example of that.

I could go on but I’ll get to the point! The writers blow me away every single season so I want to put my trust in them. All this buildup was for a reason, and I highly doubt it was just to tear it back down again by having Lotor betray them because that would take them right back where they started, which would be counterproductive and a waste of time. They could have accomplished this without the romantic buildup.

So what I think may happen is this: Lotor probably WILL betray them. And it’s gonna hurt both sides. If you noticed, he hasn’t bonded with any of the paladins or had any comic relief moments with them, all his time is spent with Allura. So if/when he betrays them, it is going to be focused on Allura and Lotor. He may tempt Allura to join him, but i highly doubt she’ll go for it.

This season made us more sympathetic for Lotor, they showed us COMPLETELY new sides to him and a bit about how he was raised/exiled, the sort of mindset he was taught from birth (“victory or death”) and how desperate he was to find this ancient Altean land, for centuries, only to have it ripped away from him because of what he was taught. This wasn’t a “Lotor failed because he’s evil” thing, this shows us that Lotor needs to go on a personal journey and unlearn the galra way that was so ingrained in him his whole life. He wasn’t taught the Altean way of peace first like Allura (which allowed her to be accepted by the white lion)

So whatever happens with getting this unlimited quintessence and the rift, or Lotor realizing that Haggar really IS Honerva, maybe Lotor figuring out project Kuron like with Narti, will probably set this off somehow. Lotor and Allura become rivals like Alfor and Zarkon, but it’s different because I’m pretty sure this season was about them building up feelings for each other. I could be wrong, but that was a ridiculous amount of romance just to toss out the window. I mean if allur/ance was endgame, they would have focused on that more. So I think Allura will keep trying to persuade Lotor to come back and fix things, and eventually, he will, because he doesn’t want to be his father or like Haggar, he’s made it very clear he hates both of them.

What might happen is, if/when Lotor betrays them, Allura will be hurt and lance will comfort her. However, Lance will be hurt, too, because he sees how she cares for Lotor and he will try to accept that it isn’t going to happen for him and move on.

I would also like to mention that the writers said Lotor will not be pursuing Allura in the creepy way he was in the old show—but nothing about not pursuing her at all (in fact, they teased lotura in an interview!)

One last note—and I mean no hate to allur/ance shippers, so if you like allur/ance I recommend stopping here—it would be counterproductive to Lance’s character development to give him exactly what he wants. He likes Allura because she’s a beautiful alien princess, she’s literally a dream girl to him. He doesn’t understand her customs or culture, he doesn’t understand the politics of being royalty, he doesn’t understand her trauma. But Lotor does. He understands all of that. “Lance needs a girl who is self-assured.” Allura was still doubting herself right up until Lotor helped her. Lance needs to learn to look past appearances and fall for a girl for more than just her looks, just like how he needed to learn that being the black paladin isn’t about the glory like he thought.

I could always be wrong about all of this, but this is just how I view things.
