For a review of Rūrangi, see this link. It's a movie about being trans, being Māori, discovering your sexuality, being exhausted by activism, and reconnecting with family. It was originally released as a series, but was re-released as a feature film later.

Caz, the trans protagonist, is played by a trans male actor (Elz Carrad). All trans characters are played by trans actors. The writer (Cole Meyers) is trans. Tweedie Waititi, Taika Waititi's sister, was brought in as a consultant to develop the film's Māori storylines.

Microdosing.

That’s it. There’s one hrt option you can do that starts you out at a very small dose of your desired hormone (mine is T). This lets you have a bit more control of how fast you transition and reach a more androgynous look if you’d rather do that. Personally, I’m using microdosing in the long term because it was less overwhelming/scary to me to be able to control how fast my transition went.

Some other microdosing benefits include:

- slower transition

- ability to present closer to gender-neutral

- even though it’s slower, you can still gain the same effects as a full dose

- easier to start/stop as needed because it’s a smaller dose

From personal experience, I was super skeptical about hormonally transitioning because there isn’t a lot of science out about the long-term effects. Knowing all possible outcomes helps with my anxiety, and the information I could find out there wasn’t cutting it. Plus, I didn’t know if I even wanted to fully transition. I’m transmasc. I like being able to fall into my gender neutrality with my outward presentation.

My therapist was the one who actually told me about microdosing and, regardless of what the article linked says, I have seen plenty of positive mental health changes. Since starting microdosing six months ago, some of the changes I’ve noticed are:

- body fat redistribution

- face change (more jawline which is cool)

- vocal changes (can hit lower voices easily when I read aloud)

- stable mood/less anxiety

-more confidence

- muscle mass increase (I’m a cyclist, so lots of leg definition now and butt too which I guess makes my partner happy? Not dysphoria inducing too which is great)

- facial/upper lip hair (to be clear, my dad is a hairy Italian guy who’s dad was also a hairy Italian guy. I don’t think I needed too much of a T increase to see hair start on my face, but this is a genetic thing and will vary from individual to individual)

- beginning of bottom growth, not much but enough to be noticed by me and my partner

I can’t speak much to transfemme or someone microdosing estrogen, but for T this has been a good way to ease into transitioning. I’m not a doctor, but if you’re looking to transition but want to go slowly or aim for a more gender neutral approach, talk to your doctor about this.
