There is syrup on her face, this wide-eyed look that often accompanied her when she knows she’s done something quite foolish. Of course, it is this very thing, one reason among many, that Philippa has had an easier time merely existing around her.

“Just live the kind of life I do. Don’t have to impress people if nothing matters.” – Of course it’s not as simple as that. Philippa already knows that Orion needs people to like her so much all the time, but she also knows that it’s hard to not like someone like her. They are two very different people, but all that means to Orion is that Philippa has chosen her friends in ways that didn’t lead to the best life.

There are people who would accept her for who she is without judging. There are more people like Orion out there, and more people like her but not like her. There are more refined in the ways that she thinks would be better suited for someone of Philippa’s status, but if she wanted that she wouldn’t be eating messy syrup soaked pancakes with her at noon.

Orion winced, her fork scraped the plate in just the wrong way, but such displeasure is easily forgotten. She dropped the fork with a noisy clatter and reached across the table, caressing the other’s cheek before her thumb grazed gently over her painted bottom lip.
