took the uphill trek to a cafe in one of the engineering buildings to review for my econ midterm but it was worth it because this view?? spring semester is going by so freaking fast (how is it nearly march) but i’m loving every second. some exciting/not so exciting updates:
i’ll be writing for two campus publications - a lifestyle magazine and a political magazine - this semester and i am so ready to get back into the writing game!! haven’t written a thing since my high school journalism days and i missed it so much
i’m training for a half marathon! what the heck!! that’s the first time i’ve said (written?) it out loud. so excited but also a little nervous i am definitely not a ~runner~ but wanted to take on a new challenge.
i think i’m like 3 years too late to the game but i have a newfound obsession with hamilton and broadway musicals in general? i bought tickets to see in the heights in april and hamilton (!!) in may and i am SO ready although my bank account is screaming
berkeley is SO beautiful this time of year! the sun is out the weather is amazing and there are flowers everywhere and i love it so much (my allergies are insane though) but also why is it already so warm it’s literally february is this climate change
sometimes when i go for a walk i look at the sky and realize that i really love earth & nature like i just get this really nice feel. i love it

- the night sky (even in the darkest of times, see beauty in things)
- new chances (to learn. to improve. just be patient)
not to be sappy on main BUT one thing that i really loved when studying linguistics was that the more important a word is, the earlier the concept of this thing was given a word. for example, the word water is similar in many similar languages (aqua, agua, água). so, the more important a word is, the more languages it’ll be similar across and the older this word will be, theoretically and generally speaking (many other things also affect this)
AND SO in my years studying linguistics, there was one word that was nearly identical across so many regionally different languages (though there are outliers of course), from europe to most of asia to subsaharan africa to indigenous languages. across nearly all languages this is the first word people learn how to say and maybe the first word humans in general officially named and defined:
mamãe - portuguese
妈妈 (māmā) - chinese
ਮੰਮੀ (mamī) - punjabi
mamah - mayan (yucatec)
мама - bulgarian, russian, ukrainian
ماں (mäm) - urdu
মা (mā) - bengali

this isn’t actually the first word because we teach babies this word (most likely), but because the “mama” or “ama” sounds are the easiest things for babies to say, and it’s nearly always the only thing they can say at first, and adults across all languages defined their language around that.
babies all over the world for thousands and thousands of years all started out blabbering sounds like “mama” and mothers everywhere were all like Oh Shit That’s Me! I’m Mama!
things that actually do improve your mental health that of course won’t cure you and solve all your problems, but will significantly improve your quality of life:
• drinking enough water
• eating healthier
• getting enough exercise (even just doing a bit of yoga/stretching everyday or going for a walk)
• adopting a more positive mindset (not pretending everything’s fine, just not being overly negative and trying to see the brighter side of things and have hope for the future)
• taking a shower everyday and washing your hair enough, taking care of your skin, doing nice things for yourself every now and then (it doesn’t have to be costly, it could just be something small), and other forms of self care
• meditation (its actually proven to improve your mental health significantly and really helps with things like stress and anxiety)
• being more mindful about the media you consume and how its affecting you (e.g “hey i feel more anxious when im on social media because of this reason, I should decrease how much time i spend doing that”)
• practicing self love (although it’s hard, it’s absolutely necessary)
• writing in a diary, it can be a physical diary or just on your phone (really important for people who can’t get therapists or don’t have anyone to talk to)
please stop downplaying the positive impact that small practices like these can have on someone’s life just because they won’t fix everything. small improvements are still improvements. neglecting yourself and your health is terrible for your mind and any steps towards taking better care of yourself are really important

student self-care: but not necessarily the feel-good kind edition
1. what have you been procrastinating on? afraid to do? make a list. put it on your google calendar. be very honest with yourself. put every single task you have to do, schedule it, block out your calendar if you have to. it’ll help you in the long run even if it’s scary at first. 2. sort the loose papers settled at the bottom of your backpack. don’t risk losing precious class notes or syllabi or readings. use folders to classify them by subject. label them clearly. sort them by chronological order and label what class and what part of the syllabus they’re from. you’ll thank me during exam season. 3. evaluate your finances. have a way of keeping track of them. personally, i tend to spend a lot on food and coffee when i’m stressed. make a budget and stick to it. 4. if you’re struggling in a certain subject, make some time for it. i know it’s painful and easier to procrastinate, but make time. set a certain quota of pages to read. email your professor for help and consult if you have to.
5. eating healthy isn’t necessarily eating delicious. i know everyone posts their croissants and lattes and cakes (guilty) but eat that salad, eat your vegetables, eat a balanced diet. it’s brain food and it’ll sustain you and help you focus better. 6. take the time to really care for yourself. make it a routine. take daily walks, count the glasses of water you have, make sure to shower regularly. do your laundry and clean your room. take your medication regularly, schedule doctor’s appointments if you need to. your health is much more important than school, and your wellbeing will help your performance. 7. sleep is good. regular sleep is good and necessary. but know when you have to sacrifice a little sleep to get things some very hard things done. then sleep after. self-care isn’t always pretty. sometimes it’s about being disciplined and confronting what you’re afraid of. but it will make things easier and lighter for you in the long run. just one day at a time.
10/15/19: started off this week with an anthro midterm and a literal earthquake ! currently studying climate physics in the library before lecture. one of the best things about university is definitely how amazing the architecture is, my high school was literally just a bunch of concrete buildings lol. it’s homecoming week so everything is hectic but I’m having so much fun !! we love college!
