Everyday I'm more and more convinced diy in some ways may be the solution to a lot of overconsumption.
Like yes, I collect things too, there shouldn't be any shame with collecting things because if you approach it properly, you shouldn't be drowning in your collections and be in groups to trade/give away/sell what you don't want. Inheriting collections is another thing and even then I don't think its fair to shame the family member that passed for it (and honestly they will sell fairly quick depending, especially if its furbies or beanie babies and at times I feel like the shame being thrown out there is cringe culture dressed up in progressive clothing) Sometimes its an indie company making merch to fund their work, and while I hate the mystery box approach they tend to be more ethical than others doing the same kind of product.
But if we allow this to inspire us, to make something of our own it fixes the issue partially. You aren't dropping money on a labubu box because you decided to make your own creatures. You aren't spending money on overpriced, likely cheaply made festival clothing because you thrifted it and modified it yourself. People could see these and desire commissions from you but there's no pressure to do so and turning your hobby into a business shouldn't be the first instinct (but we all gotta do what we need to do survive so no shame on it, especially if you make it all as accessible as you can because things are getting to the point where most can't even support artists but you also need food on the table so its a ugly paradox in the end)
Its never too late to pick up skills and even if you can't, there may still be artists and small businesses out there that you can afford to do it for you. Don't give up on learning. I didn't even know how to make anything beyond a classic kandi single for years but I attempted to learn again and with the right tutorials and new string I was making cuffs and larger pieces. Yes raw materials are expensive (fabric by yard and to ship it nearly costs as much as a full on official merch plush) but hunt around for deals, people selling left over supplies, etc. There's workarounds, don't let the crushing systems crush your way out. (fun fact, yarn can be brushed into needle felt roving with a slicker brush, especially a higher quality yarn but the cheap stuff works too its just more difficult to work with)
In a way it is kinda of a rebellion. Seeing something on the store shelf and saying "No. I am going to make this myself and make it special to me" is kinda badass. Even if the materials are being priced out of your range. Even if people are trying to shame the whimsy out of you. Keep going. Keep trying.
If anyone was wondering if the CRK collab hoodies were worth the preorder wait (tho think they aren't available for now know the preorders were limited time) Managed to snag one of the 15 in my size before it swapped to preorders.
Yes. I can confirm Lily's was def worth the money. These things are a bit thicker than the average hoodie, but not too bulky for inside unless you get hot easily. Sleeves fit nicely for being so baggy and I love how there's a gap between the fabric and my pit. The prints are handling a cold wash/dry inside out great so far and not worried about the inner design as its printed within the fabric, not on top of it like the rest. The hood has its own lining and other than a bit of stray thread I trimmed away and the stubborn zipper at times overall its a good quality jacket.
Wildfires Blaze Through Pacific Northwest Tribal Lands
It’s hot and dry across the region, making for tinderbox conditions.
Firefighters, pilots and equipment operators are mobilized across much of Indian Country in Washington and Oregon, to rein in wildfires that have endangered many tribal communities.
Amidst the powwow season and canoe journey season festivities, multiple tribes are currently being impacted by wildfires, and homes, livestock, pets, and valuables are in danger of being lost.
As wildfires burn through Native nations in Oregon and Washington, communities across both states have banded together to set up sites to do
Above is an article describing what tribes are currently impacted. There is also a lot of information for WA/OR locals on where to drop off physical donations contained within it. If you are unsure of the current status of drop-off locations, check the official website(s) or Facebook profile(s) of the tribe(s) you wish to donate to.

Say you break your ankle. You could know everything there is to know intellectually about the injury. Even with this vast knowledge, you will still experience physical pain.
Now take this logic and apply it to things like ADHD, autism, clinical depression, and other less visible/divergent disabilities. You cannot think your way out of feeling.
That is to say: you are not a bad, lazy, or selfish person for struggling, even if you know why you are struggling.
I've never seen a Gentle Reminder post that you're Responsible for what you've done in the throes of mental illness that's actually compassionate toward people who couldn't control their behavior.
Idk having your own autonomy, or cognition, wrestled away and being left to clean up the wreckage of your life, hurting people you never wanted to hurt while society demands you Fix It before you are Forgiven sounds traumatic as hell.
We should maybe extend the compassion we are demanding of them. Just a thought.
We know your autism makes you struggle with social cues, but Fix It. We know your adhd messes up your emotional regulation, but you have to Fix It.
I'm not saying no one should ever try, or be asked, to manage their symptoms but idk i think faux niceness and therapy speak is being used to reinforce the social unacceptability of symptoms, and sugarcoat demonizing people.
I think ACT (acceptance and commitment therapy) is so effective because it takes blame, guilt, and results completely out of the equation. You are already trying. Everything else is not important to drafting a plan of action to deal with whatever problems you're having. And the plans are for you, not making other people happy.
Hope you don't mind me butting in here, but here's some things that can help with anxiety.
1. Get your news from reputable sources that don't sensationalize. So no news, not even NPR. Instead, as you're in Washington, check this site for info:
Smoke Increasing The most widespread smoke impacts of the season are being felt on Tuesday with smoke reaching the surface both east and wes
They have a blog which calmly lays out what's happening, and they also have a tab for current fire & air quality conditions and forecasts. Between that and Watch Duty, you will have all the information you need.
2. Do what you need to do to stay healthy during wildfire smoke events: get yourself some kn95s or n95s or even a p100 if you're very sensitive. Wear those while outside. Either buy a good air filter rated for wildfire smoke, or do one of the box fan + furnace filter(s) set ups (Corsi-Rosenthal is top tier, others are cheaper and easier in the near term), using filters rated for wildfire smoke. Run it 24/7 until air quality is back to normal.
(For people not in Seattle/well-resourced urban areas around Puget Sound, skip to step 6 and then come back here)
3. Understand that regular fire is a natural and healthy part of many ecosystems around here, though what we're seeing is not. This is the result of 100 years of fire suppression of all types, which lead to a build up of burnable material, leading to bigger, hotter, more intense fires (and that's before the impacts of climate change). The fire itself isn't bad, but it is inevitable. It's better to do prescribed burns intentionally and safely. This is a brief explanation:
Washington Prescribed Fire Council is a collaborative group working to protect, conserve and expand the safe use of prescribed fire in our s
4. This talks about the westside prairie ecosystem, which is ecosystem dominated by Garry Oaks, a keystone tree species that is fire-adapted, and used to cover much of the I-5 corridor:
Prairies are one of the rarest ecosystems in Washington. Once common in the South Puget Sound region, habitats such as prairies and oak wood
These prairies have pretty much disappeared because of fire suppression, of both natural fires and intentional cultural fires by the native peoples of this area.
5. Realistically, it's very, very unlikely that you'll ever have to evacuate Seattle of all places due to wildfires. West side wildfires are not nearly what east side fires are, and they're much less common:
The geography, ecosystems, and resources of the two sides of the state are very, very different. Seattle itself is surrounded by water, meaning those planes can just dip into the Sound right there and almost immediately drop their load. All those multi-lane highways act as fire breaks, too. Seattle also has a lot of money and resources. In short, Seattle is the last place you need to worry about burning.
6. That said, you could do the level of preparedness suggested by the government in general:
Forest fires and wildfires threaten lives and destroy homes and natural resources. You can take action now that can help save lives and help
Knowing what you would do and having a plan can really help with anxiety.
7. Do what you can to help those directly impacted by wildfires. Donate to food banks, local non-profits, etc. Doing something about it tells your brain that you can do something, that you're not helpless. You can have an impact, you can help people who have been harmed by these fires.
8. Spread the word about the effects of total fire suppression and the need for prescribed fires. Also look into fire wise landscaping, if applicable. Or holler at your local cities to get on that. Some resources on that matter:

I actually do think it’s better for abusers and abusive characters to realize the harm their past actions caused and seek to do better than be literally or metaphorically executed for their crimes

Something about how society cares more about punishing the wicked than about making the world a better place, and how many people really struggle to shake that.
Real talk I don't think Lily's revival (potential as its technically unconfirmed still but do think its happening or she's being reborn in some way) isn't a bad writing move at all. And its wild to switch up when people said her death in the first place was poor writing. (it wasn't in my opinion, had a feeling for months it would occur)
In fact I feel like it strengthens the impact of the end of ch 15. Lily is a very resolve based character when it comes to her arcs. With that resolve being a central focus for ch 15 (doing what she felt called to do knowing the risk and the chance she wouldn't make it) it ties in really nicely with what I think they may do, or at least set up here.
If she can regain her memories and escape the Nether Realm off of sheer will alone (and it seems Vanilla's assistance) that just puts her resolve on more of a display. The fact that she may cut through fate with the force of free will (but not in a ultimately destructive manner like Dark Enchantress did) ties into everything pretty well to me. Its what I expected for ch 15 so them doing it later on? Yea I'll take it.
AND the card for this chapter being Death (ties to internal transformation, rebirth) just adds to it even more. Note the contrast here of her falling from the tower into the batter and her going up the steps in the Nether. That's not for giggles guys. Can't recall if this card directly follows the Tower but if so it makes it all deeper.

so this post has blown up; turns out a lot of people feel the same way I do. If you're feeling conflicted or upset over 4th of July, I've compiled a list of educational resources and charities, both regarding US and international issues, which you can look into if you'd like. Issues here include humanitarian aid to Gaza, Ukraine, and the Caribbean, as well as reproductive, LGBT, BIPOC, and disability rights in the US.
woke up and saw people were reblogging this again. anyway, yeah. america is still being really mean and I do not want to go to its birthday party today
if you would like to spite the really mean people even more today, consider donating to raices con voz. they're a student-led organization in los angeles, who deliver food and essential supplies to immigrant families who can't leave their homes due to the ICE raids. More information about them here
EDIT: Had to fix the link! please reblog this version instead
another year of not wanting to go to america's birthday party in two days. because it's really mean. so we should help the people that america is being really mean to
in keeping with tradition, here is a link to unicef's fund for emergency health supplies and services for survivors of the venezuela earthquakes.
here is another link for manos in action, an organization that delivers supplies, such as food and childcare items, to latin american immigrants in central florida. I've participated in one of their local food drives; they're great. if you're not local to central florida, you can always donate money.
the other links are still available too, so feel free to check those out!
