I saw Obsession and it was a very good f*cking movie. I thought it was shot incredibly well and the performances were outstanding. It's going to be nominated, but Inde Navarrette deserves a Lead Actress nod because f*ck. I haven't been this unsettled by a performance since Toni Collette in Hereditary. She's that good. Curry Barker apparently directed this thing which is another cap in the legitimacy of Youtube creators. I always found that funny. Youtube is literally randoms making content for other randoms. They're just assholes out here creating for the sake of art and no one takes that sh*t seriously. Everyone forgets that Donald Glover got his start on Youtube. His run on College Humor is what got him the gig on Community. Freaks and Geeks was released on Youtube first, launching Childish Gambino into the hip hop stratosphere. Between this film, Iron Lung, and The Backrooms, motherf*kers better start putting a little respect on that Youtube Creator name. Listen, Obsession is really good. It's definitely worth a watch but, more to the point, this sh*t is really putting media literacy in focus.
I have seen SO many sympathy posts and videos for Bear. My guy, he's the f*cking villain. This entire film is about his selfish desire. HE'S the one obsessed. It's HIS obsession! He's obsessed with a version of Nikki he made up in his head. Mans never saw Nikki or her very real affection for him because Nikki isn't a person to Bear. She's a fantasy. She's a wish, HIS wish. Whatever the wish did to Nikki, created a new Nikki in Nikki's body. And when he realizes that, he keeps going! The few times Real Nikki breaks through, it's pure trauma. Bear asks Real Nikki what's so bad about being with him and she tells him, out of her own mouth, while the fake Wish Nikki is sleep, that he's never been with her. Mans just walks off. Doesn't even acknowledge the truth Real Nikki just threw at him. He walked off while Real Nikki literally begged for death. He knows and CHOSE to continue imprisoning Real Nikki. This piece of sh*t is basically raping her whenever they're intimate because Real Nikki is literally unable to consent. Real Nikki is WELL aware of EVERYTHING going on and Bear is just okay with this because he has his Nikki. This motherf*cker is a monster and people sympathize with him! F*cking insane!
Bear is the villain. He has, with his selfishness and cowardice, kidnapped and imprisoned an innocent woman. He brutalizes her by forcing her to do his bidding. Because that's what this is. She brutally murdered their friend because she couldn't stop her body from doing so, because of Bear. He rapes her constantly. We watched that sh*t once, during the course of hat I imagine is a weeks long situationship. Really Nikki is privy to all of this. She can see what is happening to her body and can't do anything about it. Ma is literally screaming in agony and, instead of engaging, Bear hangs up the phone. F*ck, dude, when he has the opportunity to self-delete and free her, he tries to throw up the pills he just took. Mans chose to keep this sh*t going, after he watched her kill two, TWO, of their friends. At no point in this film is Bear sympathetic. He was pathetic from the beginning, disgusting after the wish, and detestable by the end of the film. It's crazy to me people are βyeah, butβ-ing that sh*t. This is not a subtle film. You aren't supposed to root for bear after he makes that wish. He's a pathetic loser who is too cowardly to actually communicate his affection to the girl he likes, even after she, herself, asks him directly. Instead, he chose to wish-enslave her and refuses to set her free. Do you have any idea how f*cked Nikki is after coming to her senses? How the f*ck is she supposed to explain any of that sh*t to the cops? But it's okay because Bear loved her. The f*ck outta here.
