Rogice: A Summary
âRoger and Maurice came out of the forest. They were relieved from duty at the fire and had come down for a swim. Roger led the way straight through the castles, kicking them over, burying the flowers, scattering the chosen stones. Maurice followed, laughing, and added to the destruction.â
âŚ
but the question isâŚwhat were they doing in the forest?
""Ralph--where's the ship?"
Simon stood by, looking from Ralph to the horizon. Maurice's trousers gave way with a sigh and he abandoned them as a wreck, rushed toward the forest, and then came back again."
No ship? Whatever then, quickie with Roger.
"Where's Maurice?" Piggy wiped his glass again. "I expect... no, he wouldn't go into the forest by himself, would he?" ... "Where's Bill and Roger?" Piggy leaned forward and put a fragment of wood on the fire. "I expect they've gone. I expect they won't play either."
Apparently the question is what weren't they doing in the forest

I wanna bring up a point about Rogice that I realized a while back...
...and how it kinda works on a metaphorical level. Now I'm not good at explaining things thoroughly, so bear with me and I should at least be able to put the gist of it into words.
So, I never discussed it in an English class, but I hear Roger represents evil and Maurice can represent the common man, a follower. It might be a stretch, but I could see Maurice being attracted to Roger because of that evil, the way man has always been tempted to evil, or at the very least too curious. Roger, likewise, would love that power over a person. Would it be a cute, loving relationship? No, probably not; this is apparent in the mix of oneshots I've done for them (and while I'm thinking of it I plan to make a masterlist of those later tonight). But I think it's certainly something to consider when there's claims that there's "really no evidence" for this ship, there's definitely SOMETHING.
BECAUSE I'VE NOTICED SOME COMPLAINTS LATELY I DECIDED TO POST AN OLD ROGICE ONESHOT OF MINE THAT I FINALLY GAVE A SHITTY ENDING TO TO RECLAIM MY POSITION AS AÂ CONTRIBUTORÂ TO THE ROGICE FANDOM.
So it's really long because I wrote this last spring break, never really intending to post it anywhere, and it was when I was still trying to..I guess justify this ship to myself. It's a ton of characterization and "how would these two manage to realistically work together in the context of the book" so it's mostly when they'd apparently watch the fire together. Idk. I just don't know. Here ya go -
âWhy should the hunters have to watch the fire? Itâs right boring, and itâs not like we should have to babysit a fire all the time,â Maurice whined to his companion.
Roger just grunted an agreement and continued drawing random designs in the sand with a stick. The dark boy would rarely react much to the incessant rambling of the boy he found himself often paired with in school, the choir, and now on this island. This never seemed to bother the larger boy, if anything the apparent lack of argument or judgment would just encourage his mouth more. Maurice, while friendly to everyone, always seemed to passively follow others, without much of an opinion. Roger had learned long ago that, at least the opinion part, was far from the case. The kid had something to say about everything, but didnât really care to stand out from the crowd or lead anyone. He preferred to watch and observe everyone, making small talk and cracking jokes only because he canât seem to ever keep quiet. It appeared to Roger that he was the only one the boy would really say anything meaningful to, though. If anything, the furtive boy appreciated this humble intelligence.
âSay, Roger, do you think a ship will really come? Or maybe a plane? I mean, there have been stories about people missing for years before someone finds them. What if weâre never rescued?â
Said boy shrugged in reply, focusing his attention on a nearby lizard that darted from rock to rock, none seeming to satisfy it. He reached out to grab it by the tail, barely keeping a hold on the thing as it squirmed around violently. He examined it curiously, then threw it into the fire, a wicked grin on his face as it crackled and soon turned to ash. Maurice scrunched up his nose, but showed no other reaction to the boyâs sadistic amusement.
âDo you even want to be rescued?â he asked, trying to keep conversation going.
Roger pondered this for a moment, then slowly shook his head. âI like it here,â he replied.
Maurice sharply turned his head to face the other boy, hearing his voice for the first time since they began their shift. Encouraged by this, he grinned and remarked, âIt is fun without any rules or grownups, isnât it? I wouldnât mind not having to see any more girls again, either.â
His companion gave a short nod, and it appeared he was back to his silent self, but a minute later he replied, âYeah, theyâre all a pain. And youâre a rather odd one,â he narrowed his eyes at the other boy, âJack couldnât seem to stop complaining about being stuck here unsupervised with no girls to spend the time with, yet you say you donât want them here..â
Maurice tensed up, realizing what heâd let slip out. He had known for a long time now that heâd never found any interest in girls, but would stare at other boys longer than he probably should. He was also vaguely aware that maybe that was related to why he always insisted on spending these times with Roger, but refused to ever think much about it. After all, it wouldnât do any good, right? He wouldnât dare assume that Roger, or any other boy from school for that matter, would ever return the feelings, so there wasnât much good just setting himself up for disappointment. Realizing that it probably made him look even more suspicious taking this long to answer, he pulled himself out of his thoughts and laughed nervously, âYou just called them a pain, didnât you? Youâre just as odd.â
This put a ghost of a smile on Rogerâs face, before he replied, âI suppose so.â
-Â Â -Â Â -Â Â -Â Â -
After unsuccessfully searching for a certain someone for what must have been a good hour before the fire watch shift he knew was coming, Maurice sighed, defeated, and chose to just go it on his own. After shooing away Bill and Robert and insisting that his companion would be here soon, so they could go and leave him on his own, he slumped against a log, glaring at the fire as if it was all its fault.
He sort of knew why Roger had disappeared. The boy had been glaring at and otherwise avoiding him since the other day after their last fire watch together. To be more exact, after he had ran away while they were tormenting the littluns with their sandcastles. At least, thatâs when he thought Roger started being mad at him. It was hard to tell, and he couldnât really see why that would have upset him. Roger had never had a problem with someone choosing to leave him to his own devices. Maurice easily ignored how unnecessarily cruel to other kids he could be because it was never directed at him, he could even understand wanting to mess with the kids a little, but he didnât really feel comfortable joining in so much. He sighed, choosing to let the topic go for now.
Maurice decided to take this time instead to finally think on why it was he would always go out of his way to find Roger. Really, he could probably become friends with any of the other boys on this island, but he wouldnât let himself become very close to any but Roger. He didnât think the other boy would ever consider them âcloseâ, though, and the bit of hurt this thought caused didnât go unnoticed.
Forcing himself back on the topic of why he cares so much, maybe it was just that for all his hostilities towards people in general, Roger never actually tried to push him away. Classmates would often quickly tire of him always being around, always talking, him never admitting that it was just because he couldnât stand to feel alone. Roger could very easily, very cruelly make him regret ever talking to him, Maurice knew that. But he never did, he never let Maurice feel lonely, even if that was never the dark boyâs intentions. Try as he might, he couldnât think of what heâd ever done right to receive this unusually kind, or admittedly mostly just neutral, treatment from the sadist, but he figured he wouldnât complain about it.
It felt like a silly reason to fall for someone, though. Was it really just because the boy listened to him? What was a good reason to like someone? He also thought the boy was pretty attractive too, especially now. He hadnât tanned as much as most of the other boys have, but this time on the island still gave his skin a rich golden tone. His barely overgrown bangs stopped just above his eyes in a way that seemed to suit him so well, and curls had begun to form around his ears. The lack of shirts would also constantly reveal a more toned body than one would have expected. The intense sun would always reflect into his already brilliant gray eyes. And did he really just say all this from memory? How long had he been noticing this so much?
He didnât notice that really, Roger had been hiding in the trees watching him sit there in deep thought. He had even caught a few things that the boy had muttered out loud, at least once sounding like he had said his name. Roger gave a small, shy, but genuine smile at this thought that quickly turned into a smirk. Was the boy actually concerned with where he was right now? He already knew Maurice was one of very few that put any positive value to his opinions or even his presence, but did it actually upset him that he wasnât around?
Roger couldnât really decide if he cared either way â he was still annoyed that Maurice had this nasty habit of walking away just when he was starting to really have fun, just when he really felt he might have a friend he could really be himself around without receiving a disgusted look. As if heâs ashamed, or frightened, or..Roger wasnât really sure what. But every time it pissed him off more. As much as he loved attacking and bullying other kids, he did want at least one friend, someone that was happy to see him. Heâs never actually found someone, though; he would always screw it up, somehow. He wasnât sure why, but he especially wanted to try to keep whatever relationship he had with this one intact. He sort of had Jack too, but the redhead was always too bossy and arrogant, even if he had no clue what he was talking about. It was a pain to listen to him most of the time, but for now, at least, it was easier to carry out the little princeâs few orders, then continue on with his life, than to attempt to argue with him. He was even more loud and obnoxious when threatened or angry.
Feeling compelled to go over and talk to the boy, Roger slinked out of his hiding spot and silently walked over to sit on the log next to Maurice. Pulled out of his internal monologue by the log moving against his back, Maurice jumped and stuttered, âH-Hey Roger,â pulling himself together, he added with a shaky smile, âtook you long enough.â
Forcing himself to be talkative in return, to maybe figure out what he found was so great about this guy, Roger mumbled, âYeah, sorry about that. Whatâs with you? Youâve been acting weird these past few days.â
âWeird? Not any more than usual. Just been thinking about things. Even if I was, this island is enough to drive anyone a little batty. Besides, itâs not like I was even thinking anything weird, certainly nothing about-â Maurice had been nervously rambling, but cut himself off when he realized what heâd nearly admitted.
Roger eyed him suspiciously. Seizing this opportunity, he crouched down to look the boy straight in the eye, his face creeping closer and stopping just short of their noses touching, âWhat werenât you thinking about?â he asked. His voice was almost gentle, almost innocent, if it wasnât laced with venom, with a threat.
Maurice felt his breath hitch in his throat, struggling to get his brain to think fast enough to come up with a satisfying lie, to not just focus on who was only centimeters away from him. Before he realized what he was doing, he stammered out, âNothing..nothing about you.â
Not really surprised, but very intrigued by this response, Roger searched his eyes for anything that might confirm what this implied. Naturally, there was a hint of fear that heâd grown accustomed to seeing, and it hurt him more than he cared to admit. This fear was easily overshadowed, though, by something he couldnât recognize. Longing, maybe, or desire. He wasnât sure if this was what he saw or just what he was expecting. Maurice was still paralyzed when he stood up abruptly and wordlessly stomped off, frustrated and confused. So much for not avoiding him anymore.
-Â Â -Â Â -Â Â -Â Â -
âSo, why did you really..do what you did?â
Roger shifted and fidgeted in his seat before mumbling, âCut right to the chase, donât you?â
Maurice smiled, âYep, and since you wouldnât just answer the question, you have to answer a second one too â do you regret it?â
The dark boy sighed and hung his head low, âI just wanted him to shut up already. Perhaps I overreacted, but the fatty had it coming, anyway. And no, I donât regret it.â
He considered this answer, humming softly to himself. It was hard sometimes to tell how truthful the other boy was. He had no real reason that Maurice knew of to lie to him, but did he really not regret it? He looked pretty guilty, after all. Realizing that Roger was beginning to look uncomfortable with the long pause, he said the first thing that came to mind, âYou donât have to justify it, you know. Itâs not like I liked him either.â
Roger smirked at this, âI donât have to justify murder? No one else on this island would have done that. In fact, no one else on this island, âcept you and Jack, can even look at me anym - â
Maurice cut in, âAnd Jack doesnât really look at you; he just gives you orders. For some reason, you listen to him.â He quickly added as an afterthought, âBesides, weâre all murderers here. Remember Simon?â
Roger snorted in reply, âI only listen to Jack because I like what he wants me to do. I enjoy the hunting and the âdisciplineâ. Itâs more fun than guarding this bloody gate.â
Mauriceâs expression darkened and red grew up his cheeks. He couldn't help it, he didn't want to pretend that everything was still alright with him, to pretend that he knew for sure that everything had even been alright before now. âYet here you are,â he spat out. âIf itâs no fun, then youâre just doing what Jack said to, right? So what, or maybe who, do you really ââ
Roger had thrust his fist out and slammed it in the boyâs jaw, sending him on the ground. He stooped down, bringing his face to Mauriceâs, until their noses were nearly touching. Maurice sucked in his breath and stared wildly at the smaller boy, waiting for his next move. Roger hissed, âI was here because I wanted to be. It doesn't matter why, since I donât want to anymore.â With this, he stomped away into the thicket, leaving Maurice alone to feel miserable about his outburst. He really never could keep quiet for long, could he?
-Â Â -Â Â -Â Â -Â Â -
âRoger, Iâm sorry..â
Maurice had been spending the better part of the past two days trying to find wherever it was that Roger would hide when he wasnât with Jack or himself. He bitterly began to wonder if there even was such a place, if the other boy wasnât just trailing behind him this whole time. Feeling silly, he entertained the idea and turned around, searching the trail heâd just walked through. He sighed, of course there was no one there. Jack had asked him earlier that day if heâd seen Roger; apparently no oneâs noticed him after he left.
This was ridiculous, Maurice decided. Heâd done nothing wrong, he had every right to be jealous and wonder about the relationship between those two. Sure, heâd laid no claims on the guy, but wasnât it obvious by now how he felt? Couldnât he be jealous? He couldnât imagine that Roger didnât know by now, he wasnât stupid. So why was he avoiding it so much? He shouldnât have any problem shooting him down. UnlessâŚ
Sighing for what felt like the umpteenth time that evening, he leaned against a tree and closed his eyes. He was nearly ready to give up, to just let him come back eventually, to decide that he wasnât worth this.
âDo you even realize how much you talk to yourself?â
Mauriceâs eyes shot open with a start. Roger was standing across from him, seemingly coming out of nowhere.
He playfully pouted in response, quickly forgetting how upset he was, âWhy are you listening to me talk to myself? And were you actually following me this whole time? You were!â
Roger didnât reply, he just looked over the boy curiously, then quickly, with the grace of a hunter, closed any distance between them and pressed their lips together. After the moment of initial shock, Maurice responded, desperately clinging on to his waist. Roger growled, forcing his tongue through and exploring his mouth feverishly. He finally pulled back for breath, both of them panting slightly.
âWhy?â
âBecause I wanted to.â
And as far as Roger seemed concerned, this explanation would always be enough.
I FINALLY GOT TO SEE THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER LAST NIGHT.
And now I seriously need to read the book, cause now I get the big hype I remember it had a few years ago. (Maybe cause of the age we were all at, then? Cause apparently it's older than that..idk). Also Patrick x Brad reminds me a lot of one out of my 56274 unfinished Rogice HS AU oneshots, and now I really want to finish that too but how. I'm so terrible at coming up with full plots. Maybe I should just admit that I'm not a writer or artist and go back to the original plan of making unfunny jokes and image macros and such. Yes.
