Do I think Kirkman is the best writer out there? No. However, putting Elita through a "failure arc" would be such a bizarre choice, especially because there's no one else on Cybertron at this point who would be a good option to pick up the Matrix if she did fail. (It's MUCH too early for Hot Rod.) The only interesting path I can see forward from her failing while Optimus is on a completely different planet is Shockwave taking the Matrix.

Sigh. I don’t think we’ll ever get a Soundwave backstory in skybound to explain anything about him and his cassettes or his loyalty. It’s a shame but the franchise be damned to give Soundwave some actual character to him that actually means something to his plot in some way 😮‍💨

I didn’t hate this issue, and I thought the battle was rather intelligently done. Also, OF COURSE there’s going to be a lot of new bots in a battle scene and some of them might be bots people recognize. The only way to avoid the “jingling keys” accusations would be to have the entire army be drones or new characters, and then we would get complaints about not using any characters outside of G1. So the comic can’t win either way.
