The brisk, morning air pushed away the last lingering tendrils of sleep as Gavina trudged down the road. The sun was just beginning to peak up over the treetops and the girl was starting to regret not grabbing a jacket.
She wandered down the street towards the town, not really having any plans in mind. It was only when the water tower came into sight that Gav decided to visit Miss Susan. She did owe her for the pie that she enjoyed with Olive.
Once she was actually within the town, Gavina slowed her pace. She’s learned that, as a child, if she looks upset, she’ll never get anywhere with all of the people asking if ‘she’s lost’ and ‘do you want me to help you find your parents?’ The most aggravating part was the fact that almost all of them were tourists.
As lost in her thoughts as she was, she was almost to the diner when she actually registered the gossip being spread. And what was being spoken made the child stop dead in her tracks.
“Did you hear-”
“That poor ranger woma-”
“It’s absolutely awful-”
“Mauled they say-”
Gavina couldn’t breathe. She new she should be demanding answers from anyone that came near her, but she was frozen in fear. There was just something so familiar about the story…
Food.
Danger.
Trespasser
GetawaygetawaygetaWAYFROMME.
The child cried out and fell backwards onto her butt, hearing but not listening to the statements of concern directed towards her. She was already up and running towards the hospital. She needed to see Gwen for herself, she needed to make sure her friend was okay. She needed to be sure that they were just dreams.
She just hoped that they hadn’t moved her out of town.
A part of Gwen wanted nothing more than to be out of bed and scoping the woods for... whatever had done this to her. All she knew for sure was that it was the creature that had been mauling the animals around town. And she definitely didn’t want anyone else to get hurt like she did. But another part of her, something that she wanted desperately to suppress because it went against everything she’d ever stood for, wanted to cower. To never enter the woods again, to move to the deepest part of the city and forget anything that had ever happened in Gravity Falls. Since she’d moved to the sleepy town, she’d bonded with ALL of its’ creatures. The cute, the powerful, the ugly. But now...
Now she wasn’t sure she wanted to have anything to do with them again.
She couldn’t remember much about the encounter, but what she could, was... terrifying. There were sharp teeth and claws, and snarls and growls that still rip through her mind.
A figure. A grotesque, misshapen, horrible figure lunging at her, and then-
“GWEN!”
The woman shot up in bed, painfully. That voice was familiar, and not... Not in a good way. Gwen started to sweat, and she could feel her heart racing in her chest. The heart monitor going crazy beside of her could attest to that fact. As the sound of sneakers running across the tile floor became closer, the world around her started to turn. So did her stomach.
This feeling was definitely recognizable-- she was having a panic attack. Gwen had had plenty of them in the past, but... she’d never had an episode triggered out of fear of a ten year old child.
Gwen stared at the girl in terror. Just looking at her face brought back a flood of memories from the night before.
Something had been following her. It was in the shadows.
When she finally got a glimpse of the monster, she knew.
Its scream was hers, but distorted. Its face and body was hers but twisted and beast-like. By the time she’d realized who the creature was-- Gavina had begun her attack, and everything had gone black.
“Cool! What is it supposed to be?” She said with a laugh. She glanced slyly over at Gwen. “I betcha I could grab one of those sheets before it even notices I’m there.” She whispered.
“GAVINA--” Gwen hissed as the child slipped from her grasp before she could stop her. The ranger watched in poorly veiled terror as her scout approached the thrashing figure, “Don’t you DARE touch that thing!”
“Uh huh, and I’m actually a bird-human hybrid.” Gav joked. She moved slowly through the corridors. Things like this didn’t phase her as she sees weirder creatures in the woods on a weekly basis.
The child grinned. “Woah! Did you hear that?!”
“Hear WHAT? Whatdidyouhear?” The woman’s hold on Gavina’s shoulder tightened. Upon entering the creepy infirmary, the two immediately fixed their attention on the hospital bed placed in the center of the room. Tied to it with leather restraints was a violently writhing human form, shrouded with sheets.
Gwen crept along the very edge of the room, keeping as far away from that crap as possible.

“Yes, all good.” She says with a smile, “I am a bit curious as to how you got my address- or even knew I had a child living at my house.” she raises an eyebrow. Her tone is playful, but she is actually very interested in the answer.
“I’m a ranger! The wilderness is my work space, and I have to get to know it, if that makes sense.”
“Sooo, yeah. I may or may not have gone by your house before, and I may or may not have noticed kid stuff in your yard-- y’know, like her bike and some other things. They piqued my interest!” She paused, expression deadpanning, “...But like, not in a creepy way. More like a ‘I could possibly recruit a child for my girl scout troop from this house’ kinda way.”

Gav awoke with a cry. She flew forward on her bed, sitting up in the darkness. Just another nightmare. She let out a shaky breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding.
The dreams had been happening for months now and they seemed to be getting more frequent. There was no pattern to them, as far as Gavina could tell, only that there was a hunt, and hunger, and…don’t think about it. She shuddered as images of grutesque animals carcesses flashed through her mind.
She swallowed back the bile building in her throat and climbed out of her bed, stumbling in the darkness towards the bathroom down the hall. While it seemed as if the sun had yet to rise, the child could hear the birds beginning to chirp. It could only be 5 AM at the earliest she presumed.
Gavina tried to push the dream to the back of her mind but something seemed wrong. She could feel dread building in the pit of her stomach but she struggled to ignore it. There was something off about this latest one but she couldn’t put her finger on why…
She shook her head and went about her morning ritual, hopping in the shower for a quick scrub. She finished up in the restroom, throwing on her clothes without paying attention. Gav grabbed her mask and crept downstairs, afraid of waking her sister.
It wasn’t the first time she had left early so she scribbled a note for her father and ran out the door. She needed to get out of the house and try to forget about the feeling of dread that seemed to get stronger as time went by.
Gwen had awoken hours ago to a searing pain that seemed to be originating from every inch of her body and the droning of a heart monitor. Her own heart monitor. According to the nurse she’d met upon first returning to consciousness, Gwen was lucky to even have a heartbeat still.
The woman described the situation as she replaced the various dressings on Gwen’s body. Apparently, she had gone missing from the ranger station the preceding night, and after a search party was sent out, she was found... Attacked. Incapacitated. Mauled.
She could hardly recollect anything from that night, aside from the rough impression of pure terror, but that wasn’t really helping anyone. What she could remember was leaving the station for one of the last rounds of her shift, and then... finding a trail. A trail of animal remains.
Ah, yes. She at least recalled something of pertinence.
For the past several weeks, the station had been receiving report after report of civilians finding the savaged remains of animals near their yards or in the woods. Sometimes it was the carcass of a wild animal-- like deer, foxes, and bobcats. But on other, undeniably worse occasions, it was a beloved family pet. It went without saying that Gwen and her coworkers had a bit a of pressure on them to find and eliminate the source of the problem.
It just so happened that Gwen was lucky enough to be the first human to encounter the scourge of the month. Now if only she could remember just what that scourge was. ----
“No, mom, you don’t have to come see me. It’s not that bad, I promise.” Gwen winced as she shifted in the hospital bed. A gush of fresh blood could be seen seeping through the gauze on her arm. God. Her nurse was going to kill her, if she didn’t inadvertently do it herself. “Uh, yeah, I made Dottie my emergency contact. ...No, we’re not still dating. ...Jeez mom, chill out. It’s nothing against you. Look- just- I have to make some other calls. Tell dad and Harls I love them, I’ll get backtoyoulaterBYE-”
Gwen hung up with a sigh of relief. With family down, she only had work, friends, and her scouting troop to relay information to. The latter she needed to get to fast, considering they had a meeting in less than two hours. Jesus, she hoped Dan would be willing to fill in for her today.

“...Look.”
“I’m going to pay it, alright? I was never not going to pay. It would make me a total hypocrite not to, y'know?"
