Lots of people have or will watch Black Panther this weekend 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Be it for entertainment or in support of Black History Month. Don’t let your support end with the month of February. Let’s take it a little further—if you haven’t watched “13th” on Netflix, add it to your queue and watch it as soon as possible. It’s a documentary about the War on Drugs and mass incarceration and how it affects people of color—US! It mentions a group called ALEC (American Legislative Exchange Council), which writes laws that overwhelmingly support conservative Republicans. Alec wrote the stand your ground law known for keeping George Zimmerman a free man. It’s also responsible for the “War on Drugs” and mass incarceration. What’s more, is that the same stores and companies you shop at and support, support ALEC. Many, such as Walmart, pulled out or cut ties with ALEC after Trayvon Martin’s murder. You’d be surprised to learn of the companies that support ALEC, that you support. In a nutshell, these companies support the War on Drugs (which was made up to put/keep blacks in jail), mass incarceration of our people, and gun laws that kill our people. When you support them, you support it too, to an extent. You can put pressure on these companies to cut ties with ALEC, or take your business elsewhere. Knowledge is power!
