at least three times per psychology class my professors warn about over-identification with disorders and relying so much on criteria we lose a holistic view of the symptoms presenting and how symptoms are something people do, not what they are. and its just a very interesting contrast to how people online treat diagnoses as facts about themselves equal to having blue eyes or black hair, or otherwise treat them as identities similar to being lesbian or trans.

the therapy style i'm learning tries to actively push away from labeling people as one diagnosis or another, whereas people online seem to find a lot of comfort in exactly that. to be honest, seeing a 'mental illness' is a list of symptoms written up by some guy probably not even fifty years ago, not an ontological state of being, was a bit of a shift for me after spending so many years on tumblr 'list your diagnoses next to the rest of your identities' dot com. something i think about quite a bit during class.
