ive found that partially treated mental illness can sometimes look to uninvolved onlookers like faked mental illness.
"someone who really has pOCD would be disgusted and horrified at their intrusive thoughts" or maybe i'm in therapy & am going by the books, being radically ambivalent to my intrusive thoughts instead of wasting energy mentally washing my paws of sin. i'm not going to perform my rock bottom for you for the sake of being believed.
"I won't perform my rock bottom for you for the sake of being believed" is going straight into my permanent storage holy shit
"fruit has sugar" warning post reminds me of my coworker who told me to make sure I don't get "addicted to fruit". yeah i'm also addicted to a nice walk on the beach
me after developing a debilitating fruit addiction
I would like to see more people talk about how jobs treat disabled employees.
I used to prep, wash dishes, and cook at mellow mushroom. I had chronic pain that wasn't NEARLY as bad as it is today, but it was still very debilitating. I told my employer "i cannot stand more than 4 to 6 hours. I CANNOT do shifts longer than this due to my illness." And even though i made my boundaries VERY clear, everyday i worked it was 8 hours at the least and 10 or 12 at the most. I would go up to my manager and say "look i really need to leave, my shift is over, my chronic pain is killing me." And he'd say "we really need to here, you HAVE to push through." And so i did, and after one, ONE month of that job my crps got incredibly worse to the point where i could no longer walk my dog around the block which was .5 miles. I quit, and that was FOUR years ago, and ever since that day I HAVE BEEN BEDRIDDEN AND HAVE TO USE A WHEELCHAIR. It is my biggest regret in life.
My best friend who has seen my whole journey has recently developed undiagnosed chronic pain, and she is in the EXACT same scenario i was 4 years ago. Busting her ass at a pizza place with extreme pain that hurts her so much she tells me "im in so much pain i don't even feel like a person." She doesn't feel LUCID. And her manager and coworkers are saying the same thing "if you don't help us you will let us down, we'll be in the shit."
That job thats hurting you isn't fucking worth it. I promise you no money is worth losing all your physical abilities and never getting them back. Your coworkers and boss do not give a shit about you, so don't you dare suffer for them. They will never understand your struggle and they will never try. They truly think being understaffed is worse than whatever pain you experience. They would rather you permanently damage yourself than inconvenience them. FUCK THEM. DON'T FUCKING DO IT!
i have a suggestion
me too
Disability rights are inherently incompatible with capitalism. Capitalism seeks to draw a hard line between "I can't" meaning "its physically impossible" and "I can't" meaning "it'll hurt me" because capitalism is 100% fine with forcing people to do things that hurt them.
Please, I beg you all, build yourself a backbone from all those moments of pain and tell them in no uncertain terms: You can accomodate my disability, or you will lose me all together due to the disability. You must let me sit down, or I will lose the ability to stand.
I let myself collapse to the floor in front of my boss once, mostly to prove the point. When she tried to drag me to my feet, I screamed in pain. She was spooked, not by my disability, but by the faces of the customers looking at her with unbridled disgust. By the idea of a disability rights violation lawsuit coming to her.
I shouldnt have ever had to do that, and I directly risked my job to do it, but I do not regret it. The job market is hell, and I don't recommend anyone do that in this current political atmosphere, but hiding the impact of their discrimination from them, holding on and waiting to collapse until you get home, which feels like you're protecting yourself, only protects them.

the older i get the more it's terrifying to me how much child surveillance is normalized. scared for your child's mental health? here's more tools that will make them feel even more watched at all times. child is experimenting with their gender identity while away from you? we made it this other adult's job to surveil them for you. kid is "enjoying" their "free time" instead of doing homework? we've put parental controls on the things that they like so that you can monitor their private time. like can we fucking stop
it took me until 24 to realize that my parents don't deserve to just waltz into my room while i'm asleep and that me thinking this was fucking terrifying behavior wasn't actually unreasonable at all
unrestricted internet access is good for children because the alternative is that their parents are fucking inescapable. surveilling your child is abuse.
before we start posting that july is gay wrath month letβs consider that july is disability pride month first and foremost. the βbe gay do crimesβ memes can wait
before this post breaches containment and people start going βwhy not both heheheβ i want you to seriously consider the very long history of disabled peopleβs existence being pushed aside and/or seen as secondary. i promise you itβs not going to hurt to hold onto the memes and give disabled people space for visibility and celebration.
i say this as a disabled trans person whose trans identity is made front-and-center to the (mainly cis) people who know iβm trans but my identity as a disabled person is brushed off by the very same people.
For me, personally, as a disabled queer
June: Queer Pride! Yay!
July: Disability Pride! Yay!
...Wait why is no one celebrating? What do you mean you think that being disabled is inherently sad and therefore isn't something to be celebrated? First of all, fuck you! That's just my life! It's not inherently sad to be disabled! People living with disabilities deserve to be happy, celebrate their triumphs and be recognized by society!
Just like June is gay pride, and we celebrate all the cultural progress toward equal rights, July is Disability Pride month and we're celebrating ALL THE SHIT WE HAVE DONE FOR OURSELVES TO EARN FAIR TREATMENT! Celebrate the ADA! Celebrate elevators, and hand rails, and chair lifts, and service animal laws and the special olympics!
I, for fucking one, will be celebrating the fact that after the military shattered my mind and irreperably damaged my body, they were legally required to pay me for the rest of my life rather than letting me die on the street! Thank you Disabled American Veterans program! Thank you disability advocates of the last several centuries! Thank you other disabled people who understand that my victory over the inherently ableist government systems is OUR victory over the inherently ableist government!
Of course they donβt like Milly Alcockβs Supergirl. Sheβs a grown ass woman with zero love interests who spends the movie saving her dog, casually dismantling a sex trafficking ring while sheβs at it, and preaching the importance of being good, not nice or smiley or cheerful but good. I for one adored the movie and I really hope Iβll get to see more of Alcockβs Supergirl sheβs now my favorite iteration of her and I love her so dearly.
the human body when you use it and exist in it
i dont agree with outdoor cats but i gotta admit the fact me and my roommate can fondly talk about local cats like theyre our beloved neighbours is pretty cool. do i know any of the humans who live in my neighborhood? not particularly. do i know the little tuxedo cat with the pink collar who recognises the ice cream truck music and comes out to get pets from all the kids? of course they're a local celebrity to me.

this lab safety training module is sending me
I feel like whoever wrote these questions was speaking from experience
iβm going to be really honest with you guys i think the tendency to read the absolute worst possible intentions into every action you donβt agree with is getting too automatic and itβs eating you from the inside out
Dick gets stroppy whenever he sees somebody getting affection from Bruce and immediately wants a hug from Bruce afterwards which he gets. Jason noticed it and used to tease Dick about it, giving Bruce hugs and making faces over Bruce's shoulder at Dick who was trying not to crash out, especially since he was meant to be mad at Bruce. But this new kid is hugging his dad? Where's his hug? And whenever Dick is on the outs with Bruce and the others want to set it right (because 1) Bruce stopped eating because his eldest isn't speaking to him and 2) Dick feels bad and he's taking it out on everybody else) they hug Bruce or cuddle up to him. Usually it takes one of them to make Dick come over and hug Bruce but on more serious occasions, it takes two or three before Dick relents and hugs his dad because fuck it, he was here first, that's his dad.
Theyve mobilized faster against this than anything in the past 10 years and to me that pretty much says it all and justifies what so many have said about them.
this made me cry so now i need everyone to see it

Imo the best type of system for children to grow up in would be one that assumes the birth parents/primary guardians won't do shit and takes care of every aspect of childcare that's essential for their wellbeing and development, collectively.
But I'm just a guy who only learned how to brush his teeth properly and got glasses as a child because we had both a dentist and a doctor come to school on a regular basis. The dentist would have us all stand in a circle with our little toothbrushes and show us how to brush and correct our technique. The doctors would give us general health assessments and then have the teachers contact our patents and essentially peer pressure them into getting us any health intervention we needed. My parents only reluctantly got me glasses because they knew the teachers would judge them if they kept seeing me sit in the very front row and still squint to see the chalkboard. So I'm biased.
The only times I ever remember seeing a dentist or doctor as a child was at school. I'm quite healthy physically and I'm very grateful for all the care I got from the various professionals who cared about my well-being and development more than my actual parents did.
We had free healthcare including dental, mind you, my parents just couldn't be bothered. When my brother, as a teenager, asked our mother if she could take him to his orthodontist appointments (which he'd already arranged for on his own) she basically told him she didn't feel like it and he had to take the bus.
If I could improve anything about that system, I'd take it even further and make it so kids could see a doctor and get meds, treatments, therapy, tests, disability aids etc. without having to rely on their parents as well. I shouldn't have had to put up with being bullied and guilt-tripped about the family finances and the time investment needed to take me to the optometrist every time I needed new glasses.
Some parents would not take care of their children even if they were given all the time and the resources. Mine are a great example of that β my mother stopped working and became a homemaker when I was in kindergarten, my father worked from the garage and was also always home. They had a car and our village even had a bus that would come once or twice an hour that would take you to the next two bigger cities.
Did that, plus the free healthcare, translate into them actually parenting and caring for us properly? It did not. They only ever did any of that reluctantly when not doing it would make them look bad, and most of the time they did a shitty job because they could never resist the urge to boost their egos by means of bullying literal children.
So I have to wonder: what did they actually contribute to our upbringing? Like they didn't teach us shit and mostly they just endangered our mental and physical health β but hey, at least they gave me cPTSD! That took some work too.
see also family abolition, and youth liberation .
A knee-jerk response to neglectful parenting I see a lot is βpeople should have to get licenses and take rigorous tests to PROVE that they should be ALLOWED to have kidsβ which is eugenics. Thatβs just the starting line for eugenics.
We are at a point in humanity where there is no meaningful reason why we shouldnβt be structuring our societies around wellbeing for all instead of wellbeing for the βdeservingβ.
Assume some parents will fail. Build social infrastructure that is designed to support failed kids rather than punish would-be parents.
