saving the galaxy rarely came with breaks— that was something anakin had learned quickly during his tenure aboard the normandy. (and not something they put in the enlistment brochures with the alliance.) but with those elongated missions and the reaper threat looming across the horizon, came brief moments of serenity. moments of shore leave. it hadn't been his original plan to spend the day at the casino with ivy— it hadn't even been his first thought. (truthfully, it was the last place he'd ever expected commander shepard to visit.) but when word traveled of the legendary claw machine containing fuzzy stuffed animals, replicas of what was known on earth as build-a-bears, came an excitement neither of them had felt in forever. (a reminder that there is a light at the end of the tunnel throughout all the darkness.)
with that happiness from the machine came quick anger as his cybernetic fingers slammed down on the joystick. it'd been their fifteenth try, another failure. (joker had already told them he wouldn't get them any more coins for the machine, leaving them to wander back to the cashier twice in the past ten minutes.) eyes glancing up, peering at their reflections through the glass, his head drops as he sighs. “is this a joke?” he mumbles under his breath, his stare reverting to the frog inside— ivy's selection of a prize, if they managed to obtain it in the first place.
“i don't think i can try this again. if i do, i think i'll end up breaking this piece of shit machine.”

another late evening turned sour, synonymous with the rest of his life at this point. it wasn't always this way— the ingress of evening birthing a hollow feeling inside him. there used to be a time, not long ago, although it feels like an eternity when his lips were graced with a signature cocky grin and the attitude of an up-and-coming fixer in night city. (the city pollution in the air might have choked inside his lungs, but his aspirations never did.) what happens when those aspirations are stolen from your grasp, though? when life crumbles, rots, and decays in front of you with no method of intervening. [the night in konpeki plaza, jackie wasn't the only one who died. a part of vincent doyle rests inside the building too.]
it wasn't unlike them to bicker like an old married couple, but what was rare was the tangible anger circling in the air, thick enough to cloud his judgment. thick enough that the gun resting on the end table beside his bed seems like the perfect way out. (a way out of having his personal voyeur. a parasite eating away his psyche, an unstoppable force of digitized nature.) “yeah, i am. one fuckin' bullet to the head and splat! there goes your fuckin' dream of stealing my fuckin' mind!” [there goes my dream too, he ignores.] vincent stares at the construct, hands trembling in fury as he reaches for the weapon; an emotion that's becoming a permanent resident in his bones. (where hopes and dreams once lived have now been evicted by rage and agony— the cocktail customary to the city of dreams.) a moment passes, cerulean hues never wandering off johnny, before he sighs. the gun is dropped onto his mattress, shuddering digits running themselves through his hair, eyes fluttering shut in contemplation.
“just... leave me the fuck alone, johnny. not in the mood for any more of your bullshit tonight.”

she hadn't originally— bounty hunters weren't friends of the jedi. (the label of jedi killers had been the umbrella view of them.) upon entering the building, tasha had anticipated a blaster to be pointed at her forehead. that was, after all, the normal day for a jedi sentinel who didn't spend the bulk of their time inside the jedi temple's air ducts. spending time with civilians, acting as peacekeepers in the streets, winding up with a criminal threatening to shoot you. [all in a day's work.] the polar opposite had occurred, though— the capture of a bounty taking place in what, she was told, was a separatist hideout. through the startlement of another person's arrival, the outlaw had punched the rodian bounty hunter, attempting to make an escape to the nearest exit. tasha's right foot extended outward, tripping the assailant in his attempt to slip past her; a loud thud and yelp booms into the room as he tumbles to the floor.
“i just watched you get punched in the face by your own bounty, who was definitely going to escape if i hadn't stumbled in here.” her eyebrows furrow, eyes squinting as her stare shifts back and forth between the rodian and the foe. “my apologies for underestimating your power. next time, i won't intervene.”
he's right and she knows it. anakin is simply saying what everyone else is too afraid to say. and yet even as he stares her down, the starkest difference between them rears its head and stares back at him, blankly. ivy buries her rage in a lead casket, out of fear of what may bloom from its rot. anakin, on the other hand, readily plants his seeds of anger and she earnestly hopes that he never has to reap what he sows. his energy is as palpable as ever; so much so that ivy has to steel herself so as to not be completely engulfed by it.
" don't you think that if i could do something, i would have done it already? " she inquires, perhaps more bluntly than she would have liked. how can she articulate that this is more than just weaving through red tape. this was about keeping the crew together. this was about seeing things through until the end.
" look, i'm no fan of being played like some two trick pony but to the council, we're nothing more than some bipedal creatures that grew up too fast. one wrong move on our end and they'd gladly cut us off from every citadel resource. what would we do then? "
the commander heaves a sigh, desperate to dispel the tension that's blanketed the room. while she's had her whole life to practice the art of control, ivy understands that control is the one weapon anakin has yet to master. " save this anger for the reapers. they're the ones who who deserve your wrath. the council will get theirs no matter what. simple law of karma. "
eyes and a heart full of flames, he backs down, allowing them to simmer to a screeching halt. anakin takes a step back from the chair she'd been seated in, cybernetic hand running itself through strands of hair as his irritation retreats back into its cage. she was right. karma was karma, and the council would get theirs in due time. [it didn't make it any easier to acknowledge they were powerless. they had no control or say with them— they were mere pawns in the game of chess they were conducted throughout the game.] gaze drifting away from the commander's, he focuses on peering out of a nearby window, the citadel's docking pad in view. “i won't allow us to fail on this, commander.” he speaks softly, almost at the level of a whisper. he's not sure who he's attempting to convince more— himself or ivy.
with the inner dragon back on its chain, he nods his head— not directly at anybody, more of a way of confirming his own thoughts. he would not let the council get the best of him. for years, he had allowed them to slither beneath the surface of his flesh, burrowing themselves like ticks. the simple law of karma existed, but so did anakin skywalker in all his blazing glory.
a few moments pass, his mind taking a moment to gather their thoughts before clasping his hands together. “no matter how the council views us, we'll still be a laughing stock to them— every after the reapers, if we manage to actually defeat them. they don't take you seriously, they don't even take the human-race seriously. when the reapers come knocking on their door— when they call us, what have they done to desire our pity? all they've done is spat in our faces and slam the door shut.”
burning like a fusion torch, anakin turns around, eyes synonymous with lava as his gaze meets ivy's once more— his anger grabbing him by the collar and pulling him forward. the dragon yanks on his chain, wishing to be unleashed. [the slave boy inside of him bellows, clawing at the lining of his stomach. there are no butterflies, only moths eating away.] “if the law of karma exists— let them burn for what they've done. they've earned it, ivy.”
@abysel (glenn): i won’t lose you.
together, they have built a life of perseverance. an unwillingness to stop fighting for each other, a stubbornness running deep between them— a link of their commitment to one another. mixed into the perseverance, though, lies an exception they both share— loss. they are certainly no exception, standing strong for those who are unable to, even through the grief that consumes their own bones. (by now, that list is never-ending; everyone has experienced a loss.) she's grateful for him, for the life they've built together— all they've ever wanted was to build something; a future worth living for. and it seems, in alexandria, they have built exactly that.
“you don't have to worry about that ever again.” she'd made a promise to him months ago— her lighter burning the polaroid he'd once taken her, commitment being vowed. you'll never lose me again. (they'd always found each other, they would always find each other. if anyone was capable of that through the blood, bones, and bodies that litter this world— it was them.) maggie intends to keep her promise; the same oath and vow she'd made as he'd slipped a wedding ring on her finger at the prison. till death do us part. her hand moves to caress his face, soft features spreading a smile.
“we're here, safe, finally makin' something out of all the bad we've gone through. you're not gonna lose me, glenn.” you're not going to lose me, you're not going to lose our unborn child, we're going to be fine. [hindsight is always twenty-twenty.]

oh, this is going to be easy.
move to the right so i can get a clear shot at them.
get out of here! there’s nothing more you can do!
no loose wire jokes.
kill him— kill him now!
i sense great fear in you. you have hate, you have anger, but you don’t use them.
his fate will be the same as ours.
easy… we’re in a bit of a situation.
we’re smarter than this!
this is where the fun begins!
hold on, you’re going to get us both killed!
oh, i have a bad feeling about this.
get help. you’re no match for him.
this time, we’ll do it together.
you won’t get away this time.
i’ve been looking forward to this.
drop your weapons. i said drop them!
that wasn’t much of a rescue.
not to worry— we’re still flying half a ship.
another happy landing.
how long is it going to take us to be honest with each other?
the fear of loss is a path to the dark side.
don’t do this. don’t shut me out. let me help you.
all who gain power are fair to lose it.
he could actually… save people from death?
is it possible to learn this power?
i want more, and i know i shouldn’t.
i found a way to save you.
i won’t lose you.
what brings you to our remote sanctuary?
i sense a plot to destroy the jedi.
you know the dark side?
i sense a great deal of confusion in you.
are you threatening me?
you’re fulfilling your destiny.
i pledge myself to your teachings.
their betrayal will be dealt with.
do what must be done. show no mercy.
have faith, my love.
the attempt on my life has left me scarred.
so this is how liberty dies… with thunderous applause.
my lady, let me come with you.
all i want is your love.
you’re a good person, don’t do this.
i won’t lose you the way i lost my mother.
and together, you and i can rule the galaxy.
you’ve changed. i don’t know you anymore.
don’t you turn against me.
you’re going down a path i can’t follow.
you have become the very thing you swore to destroy.
if you’re not with me, then you’re my enemy!
i will do what i must.
you underestimate my power!
you were my brother. i loved you!
i hate you!
it seems, in your anger, you killed her.

“ you just don’t fuckin’ get it. maybe i wasn’t a legend when i bit the bullet, but i was somebody. i had my name & all that bullshit. now, i don’t even get that. one of these days, i’m gonna’ end up flatlining & you’re gonna fuckin’ overwrite my psyche or some bullshit. it’ll be like i wasn’t even here. vincent doyle? nada. it’s like... a sick fuckin’ joke. you’re johnny silverhand— everyone knows who you are, even though you’re fuckin’ dead— no offense, dickhead. ” he’ll be dead & the only person who’ll ever remember he existed will be johnny fucking silverhand. a cruel joke, one even in the face of death, he can’t even muster a laugh for.

the city of dreams. i’d gladly kick the balls off the idiot who thought that one up.
you want nice, supportive? call a damn helpline.
swap meat for chrome, live a bd fantasy, whatever, but at the end of it all— it’s the code you live by that defines who you are.
he burned down half the city just to prove he was right, and burned the other half just for fun.
well, that way you’d kill two souls. is that what you want?
@unincinerate: all that i have, i owe to you.
dorna had never believed the green fork could create such an issue— it was simply a river, not a battlefield with a hoard of warriors lined up across the horizon. however, there was always a reason house kundt had remained neutral throughout all their years as a house and now, it was clearer more than ever. it was to prevent things like this: the potential of entering a war they were not prepared in any capacity to partake in. it was why they had, for as long as the bridge had existed, allowed house frey to control passage by their stone bridge towering over the greek fork, while house kundt got the ability to admire the view of the waterline. the north had a way with words, though. (more like, catelyn stark of winterfell had a way with words while her son had a way with his tongue and promises.)
the proposed proposition had been agreed to by ellis, their lord and dorna’s brother— house kundt would build a bridge across the green fork in an exchange of protection against the retaliation of the newly crowned king joffrey lannister (who seemed one outburst away from total war within the kingdom), as well as a later marriage between dorna and robb stark. (the marriage being dorna’s last resort of getting the fuck out of here and her exit from the teasing she’d endured all her life as lady kundt.)
rising from her crouched position, she straightens her posture, fingers fumbling with the hard hat resting on the top of her head. “ you said it— not me. ” she chuckles, the edge of her lips curving into a gentle smile. lifting the hat from her head, she places it on top of his curly locks, the palm of her hand trailing down to his cheek. it rests there momentarily, her eyes locking with his.
“ seems like everything you own will shortly be mine as well. i hope our engagement hasn’t crushed any potential dreams of fathering any bastards or marrying any princesses. ”
@unincinerate: dark rumors are hunting us. they nip at our heels.
rumors [that more than not have been true] have always haunted them like the ghosts inside a crypt, threatening flames across the horizon. they have experienced their share of vile rumors through the years, having held them hand-in-hand with one another. it is only as the years continue to pass that rhaenyra realizes, she has more enemies now than ever. heir to the iron throne, the prince who was promised— there are countless people who would not hesitate to kill her. when she gazes at daemon, the man who stands before her and has stood beside her many times prior, bounded to each other through the binds of marriage, she views no enemy in him. (it does not halt the questioning of whether her naivety has allowed her to imagine a future where there is never an enemy with him, though.)
rhaenyra gives a small nod, her hands seemingly wringing themselves dry— a gesture of anxiety. “ rumors have always enveloped us. it’s a rite of passage. ” her voice rings out cold, as if she’s pleading to hear nothing more of the conversation, though she knows that is not an option. (no such thing as an option exists during the turbulence of war times.) she sighs, eyes fluttering shut.
“ what are these rumors you speak of? ”
@unincinerate: hold your nerve. what we do, we do for the good of the realm.
blood and cheese, blood and cheese, blood and cheese— their names repeat throughout jaera’s mind like a broken record. no matter how hard she attempts to scrub their names away, she can’t— they have become a permanent fixture and now, when she closes her eyes, she envisions the scene that daemon has described. jaehaerys, helaena, blood, cheese. it makes her heart thump to the beat of a war drum, a feeling of nausea billowing through her like smoke inside a chimney. jaera had asked to be seated at the big boy table and her wish had been granted. (she has heard her grandsire speak the statement: be careful with what you wish for. in this moment, she wishes those words had stuck with her.)
“ for the good of the realm? is that comforting to say? will that help you sleep better at night? ” she questions, a hand being brought up to her face. her fingers run themselves down her nose, pinching in retaliation of what daemon has told her. (perhaps if she holds down long enough, she can be removed from this equation entirely.)
“ the realm will be protecting themselves from us before long. watch. ”
@unincinerate: you have your honor and i have mine.
if he could remove vidya’s head from her shoulders and get away with the crime, he would. criston also suspects the queen would pardon him for such crimes— her distrust towards vidya extends longer than the narrow sea. viserys, on the other hand, is a tricky bastard. (one who is watching the downfall of his kingdom, criston would retort with a spit.) he imagines slitting vidya’s throat more than twice a day, but he can recount two times every day he wishes death upon her— from the moment he wakes up, to the moment he crawls into bed. she’s a fraud, a liar, and a criminal. everything that will allow her to be the snake that invades their garden, king’s landing. but he viserys wishes to let his kingdom rot by the likes of that woman— fine. viserys deserves it.
criston’s posture stiffens at her word choice. “ the definition of honor extends past your intelligence, liar. ” cue the soft vexed chuckles as he shakes his head in disbelief. “ i will not suffer from being within the presence of your ignorance any longer. it bores me. ”

HOUSE OF THE DRAGON SEASON ONE SENTENCE STARTERS
❛ I’d rather serve as a knight and ride to battle and glory. ❜
❛ We have royal wombs, you and I. The childbed is our battlefield. ❜
❛ I want to fly with you on dragonback, see the great wonders across the Narrow Sea, and eat only cake. ❜
❛ We must either act now or leave it with the gods. ❜
❛ The gods have yet to make a man who lacks the patience for absolute power. ❜
❛ I have only ever defended you! Yet everything I’ve given you, you’ve thrown back in my face. ❜
❛ To elude a storm, you can either sail into it, or around it. But you must never await its coming. ❜
❛ We should be free to speak our minds to one another. ❜
❛ I imagine even dragons get lonely. ❜
❛ I understand the order of things. I’m not sure you do. ❜
❛ If you mean to elicit some anger from me, you should know that you’re failing. ❜
❛ Men would sooner put the realm to the torch than see a woman ascend the Iron Throne. ❜
❛ I’m right here, the object of your ire. ❜
❛ Do it. And be done with all this bother. ❜
❛ Proud men don’t like having to look up. ❜
❛ Our worth is not given. It must be made. ❜
❛ None of it needs be this way in truth. ❜
❛ The boars squeal like children when they’re being slaughtered. I find it discomforting. ❜
❛ Even I do not exist above tradition and duty! ❜
❛ How lucky you are to have a say in your own life. ❜
❛ All that I have, I owe to you. ❜
❛ Well, if you truly believe that, my dear… then you possess a generous spirit. ❜
❛ I was trying to help you. Will you not be helped? Why must every effort on your behalf be resisted - as if to the death? ❜
❛ You wear a crown. Do you also call yourself “King”? ❜
❛ How romantic it must be to get imprisoned in a castle and made to squeeze out heirs. ❜
❛ Though I do suppose you seem changed by your adventures. More mature, perhaps. ❜
❛ Marriage is only a political arrangement. Once you are wed, you can do as you like. ❜
❛ You can not live your life in fear, or you will forsake the best parts of it. ❜
❛ I have no desire to live in fear. Only solitude. ❜
❛ This is a vile accusation. ❜
❛ I have spent a lifetime defending you. But your heart is even blacker than I thought. ❜
❛ You said I could have anything. I want [name]. I’ll take her as she is. ❜
❛ When one is never invited to speak, one learns instead to observe. ❜
❛ It’s long past time our houses were united in blood. ❜
❛ Let us leave it all behind and see the world together… where we’ll be nameless, and free… free to go where we like, to love as we like. ❜
❛ What will they say of me when the histories are written? ❜
❛ I deserve some say in the affairs of my own family. ❜
❛ Your obsession with those beasts goes beyond understanding. ❜
❛ The consequences of an allegation like the one you toy at would be dire. ❜
❛ Have I lost my sanity? Do my senses lead me astray? Or is everyone else asleep, dreaming the same woolly dream? ❜
❛ You have your honor and I have mine. ❜
❛ Dark rumors are hunting us. They nip at our heels. ❜
❛ The wise sailor flees the storm as it gathers. ❜
❛ How sweetly the fox speaks when it’s been cornered by the hounds. ❜
❛ You may do as you wish, when I am cold in my grave. ❜
❛ You may know what is the right thing to be done, but love stays the hand. ❜
❛ No matter how fat the leech grows, it always wants for another meal. ❜
❛ Mayhaps the gods have scorned us for our insatiable pride. ❜
❛ What is this brief mortal life if not the pursuit of legacy? ❜
❛ Each of us is capable of depravity. And more than you would believe. ❜
❛ I will have the truth of what happened. ❜
❛ This interminable infighting must cease! All of you! We are family! ❜
❛ There is a debt to be paid. ❜
❛ What have I done but what was expected of me? ❜
❛ Exhausting, wasn’t it? Hiding beneath the cloak of your own righteousness. But now they see you as you are. ❜
❛ We play an ugly game. And now, for the first time, I see that you have the determination to win it. ❜
❛ You and I are made of fire. We have always been meant to burn together. ❜
❛ They will fear what else we might be capable of. ❜
❛ And while I should like your support, I do not need it. ❜
❛ I would say it’s nice to be home, but I scarcely recognize it. ❜
❛ I’ve done everything you’ve asked me to, and I try so hard, but it will never be enough for you. ❜
❛ Hold your nerve. What we do, we do for the good of the realm. ❜
❛ I must confess a certain uneasiness now this is at hand. ❜
❛ A generous offer. Or a desperate one. ❜
❛ But tonight I wish you to see me as I am. ❜
❛ Let us no longer hold ill feelings in our hearts. ❜
❛ It is you. You are the one. You must do this. ❜
❛ His last words to me and I was the only one to hear it. And now he’s dead. ❜
❛ I recognize no authority but the King’s. And until there is one… I have no place here. ❜
❛ It is our fate, I think, to crave always what is given to another. If one possesses a thing, the other will take it away. ❜
❛ I will do you the considerable courtesy of assuming there is a good reason for the outrage of my treatment here this morning. ❜
❛ You are wiser than I believed you to be. ❜
❛ You desire not to be free, but to make a window in the wall of your prison. ❜
❛ There is no power but what the people allow you to take. ❜
❛ Our hearts were never one. I see that now. ❜
❛ No king has ever lived that hasn’t had to forfeit the lives of a few to protect the many. ❜
❛ Reluctance to murder is not a weakness! ❜
❛ We don’t choose our destiny. It chooses us. ❜
❛ Whatever claim remains to me, you are now its heir. ❜
❛ Naught is to be done but by my command. ❜
❛ Come with me. I’ll show you the true meaning of loyalty. ❜
❛ If you choose treachery, if you swear fealty now only to later turn your cloaks… know that you will die screaming. ❜
❛ Let’s end this mummer’s farce. ❜
❛ I do not wish to rule over a kingdom of ash and bone. ❜
❛ Dreams didn’t make us kings. Dragons did. ❜
❛ You abandoned me… when I most needed you. ❜
❛ Hope is the fool’s ally. ❜
❛ I will not fight you. I came as a messenger, not a warrior. ❜
@unincinerate said: “when did we start keeping secrets from each other?” (anakin to tasha)
tasha knows he killed them. she saw it in his eyes the night he returned to the prison & rick announced they were safe for now against the threats outside of their fences. anakin's eyes have grown darker & duller throughout the months, but the return night was different. he was different. scarier, in theory, like nothing scared him anymore— like nothing could kill him any more than he already had. (but aren't they all different? they all have blood on their hands in one way or another, but the difference was how the blood got on their hands in the first place.)
she remembers carefully when rick said we don't kill the living. she took those words to heart, the only last remaining pillar of a world that's fallen. (something her & obi-wan had managed to bond over throughout everything.) anakin didn't. (& tasha's beginning to wonder whether he ever did.)
her head shakes, a vexed chuckle slipping through her lips. ❝ you started it after woodbury. everything i've heard about that place, it's come from rick & that's not a lot. you haven't said a single word. you're the one keeping secrets, not me. ❞ she retorts, her hands flying up in the motion of surrender. silence falls upon tasha momentarily, lips pressing themselves together in thought. it's not until sitting in silence, allowing her thoughts to rise to the forefront of her mind that she chooses to demand.
❝ tell me what happened in woodbury. now. ❞
