Owls are well known for being silent predators and one of the most important reasons for that silence is the hooks and bows on the leading edge of their wings. This edge breaks up the air flow around the wing into smaller streams that make mush less noise. The trailing edge of the wing also has a softer fringe that helps to muffle the little noise that’s left. (Source)

The rat seems to have lost its mind. It’s most likely infected with Toxoplasma gondii. It’s a parasite that uses a remarkable trick to spread from rodents to cats: It alters the brains of infected rats and mice so that they become attracted to—rather than repelled by—the scent of their predators. A new study reveals that rodents infected with the parasitic protozoa are drawn to the smell of cat urine, apparently having lost their otherwise natural aversion to the scent.
