Tender Moments As Orangutan Djimat Grooms His Son Joe by SloggerVlogger *Experience a heart warming moment at Dudley Zoo as huge orangutan dad Djimat gently grooms and cuddles his son Joe in the shelter.* The weather was a bit mixed, so the Dudley Zoo orangutan family decided to sit inside the hut to stay dry. Djimat was in there with his son Joe, and then a truly great moment between father and son. It is beautiful to watch as Djimat starts grooming Joe, and you can see Joe really cuddling into him until his dad starts grooming his little back. Djimat has these absolutely huge hands, yet he is holding on to little Joe with so much care. He really is an amazing dad and just so gentle with the little one. Joe hops off for a quick second but comes right back to spend some more quality time with his dad. Hilarious Moment Jeff And Mandy Stick Their Heads In A Hole by SloggerVlogger *Little chimpanzee Jeff and Mandy stick their head in a hole, while ZeeZee does it the old way* What is little chimpanzee Jeff up to at Chester Zoo today? I caught a funny moment where Jeff puts his head right into a hole in the grass. It must have looked like a good idea because Mandy then decides to do it too! They actually have their own little water hole tucked away there, which is why they stick their heads down into the ground. It seems it is much easier for them than drinking from the water's edge. Even with that clever trick available, ZeeZee manages just fine at the edge of the water, even with little Jeff hitching a ride on her back. While everyone else is busy grooming in the sunshine, Jeff is the life of the party again as he simply cannot sit still. I watched him have a playfight with his sister Stevie while baby Cyndi looked on. He finished his busy afternoon with some classic rolls through the grass. Ozala Walks Past the Lettuce What Is She After by SloggerVlogger *Watch Asante’s clever climbing move and Silverback Oumbi’s "builder" stance at Twycross Zoo. Why did the troop reject the fresh lettuce? Is there a hidden social rule at play during feeding time?* Asante is the first to come out today. Since she is the lowest-ranking member of the Twycross Zoo gorilla troop, she takes her chance to gather food early. Watch for her signature move where she tucks her food between her shoulder and head, leaving her hands completely free to climb up to her favourite spot. Next, Shufai makes an appearance and sticks his head right into the lettuce. Curiously, he throws it away! It looked fresh, but perhaps the smell wasn't quite right for him? Ozala is out next and walks straight past the lettuce, heading directly for the food pellets instead. Silverback Oumbi follows close behind. He later grabs the very lettuce leaves Shufai rejected and Ozala ignored. By the afternoon, Asante is doing her best to stay away from Oumbi. When Ozala walks past him later, Oumbi lets out a bit of a grump. With that powerful stance as he comes through the door, he really is like a builder on a building site! Oumbi is such a majestic Silverback to observe. When they were up at the high point I was worried Joe would jump into the hammock from there, but he is a bit more careful than Jim. Joe just climbs up to have a good view instead. Emotional Last Look At Afia At Bristol Zoo Before Her Move by SloggerVlogger *Final emotional visit to Afia at Bristol Zoo before her move to Jersey Zoo. Troop moments, lunch chaos and a quiet goodbye.* Emotional Last Look At Afia At Bristol Zoo Before Her New Home captures my final visit during a very mixed day of emotion and chaos at Bristol Zoo. Back at Bristol Zoo Project this week, it was lunch time and Hasani was running as quick as he could. Afia was still up in the tree, but not for long. Touni was coming down too. Ayanna was together with her brother Juni. Afia was beating her chest at Ayanna, a strong moment within the troop dynamic during the visit. It was a bit of a sad visit, as this was my last time seeing Afia before she is moved next month (June 2026) to Jersey Zoo in the UK. Like many, I would have always loved seeing her with Lope. I do hope she settles well in her new home and that the troop treat her kindly in the next chapter of her life. Lunch time also turned into chaos. Watch for the flying veg. Juni gets hit on the leg by a broccoli, and Hasani even does a roll to avoid the flying vegetables. It’s moments like this that show how unpredictable life in the troop can be, even during something as simple as feeding time. Hasani’s energy, Afia’s final presence in the troop, and the mix of behaviour throughout the group made this a visit I won’t forget. #BristolZoo #AfiaFarewell #AnimalBehaviour ℹ️I don’t do a lot of reading, but I found this particular story very ape-aling😊😄. The book I really enjoyed was “Gorillas in Our Midst: A Zookeeper’s Tale of Hand-Rearing Baby Gorillas”. It covers Hasani and Afia’s hand-rearing journey. The keepers nicknamed Hasani “Wriggles McCraw”. Having filmed Hasani and Afia for such a long time, the book really hit home. A good read, sad in places, but very honest.
