Ozala Walks Past the Lettuce What Is She After by SloggerVlogger *Watch Asante’s clever climbing move and Silverback Oumbi’s "builder" stance at Twycross Zoo. Why did the troop reject the fresh lettuce? Is there a hidden social rule at play during feeding time?* Asante is the first to come out today. Since she is the lowest-ranking member of the Twycross Zoo gorilla troop, she takes her chance to gather food early. Watch for her signature move where she tucks her food between her shoulder and head, leaving her hands completely free to climb up to her favourite spot. Next, Shufai makes an appearance and sticks his head right into the lettuce. Curiously, he throws it away! It looked fresh, but perhaps the smell wasn't quite right for him? Ozala is out next and walks straight past the lettuce, heading directly for the food pellets instead. Silverback Oumbi follows close behind. He later grabs the very lettuce leaves Shufai rejected and Ozala ignored. By the afternoon, Asante is doing her best to stay away from Oumbi. When Ozala walks past him later, Oumbi lets out a bit of a grump. With that powerful stance as he comes through the door, he really is like a builder on a building site! Oumbi is such a majestic Silverback to observe. Jim is being silly in the grass and then he is showing off one of his jumps again. When they were up at the high point I was worried Joe would jump into the hammock from there, but he is a bit more careful than Jim. Joe just climbs up to have a good view instead. Back down on the ground, Jim is sitting above Jazz. Would you trust Jim to sit above you? Lol! Joe comes to have a play with Jim. Emotional Last Look At Afia At Bristol Zoo Before Her Move by SloggerVlogger *Final emotional visit to Afia at Bristol Zoo before her move to Jersey Zoo. Troop moments, lunch chaos and a quiet goodbye.* Emotional Last Look At Afia At Bristol Zoo Before Her New Home captures my final visit during a very mixed day of emotion and chaos at Bristol Zoo. Back at Bristol Zoo Project this week, it was lunch time and Hasani was running as quick as he could. Afia was still up in the tree, but not for long. Touni was coming down too. Ayanna was together with her brother Juni. Afia was beating her chest at Ayanna, a strong moment within the troop dynamic during the visit. It was a bit of a sad visit, as this was my last time seeing Afia before she is moved next month (June 2026) to Jersey Zoo in the UK. Like many, I would have always loved seeing her with Lope. I do hope she settles well in her new home and that the troop treat her kindly in the next chapter of her life. Lunch time also turned into chaos. Watch for the flying veg. Juni gets hit on the leg by a broccoli, and Hasani even does a roll to avoid the flying vegetables. It’s moments like this that show how unpredictable life in the troop can be, even during something as simple as feeding time. Hasani’s energy, Afia’s final presence in the troop, and the mix of behaviour throughout the group made this a visit I won’t forget. #BristolZoo #AfiaFarewell #AnimalBehaviour ℹ️I don’t do a lot of reading, but I found this particular story very ape-aling😊😄. The book I really enjoyed was “Gorillas in Our Midst: A Zookeeper’s Tale of Hand-Rearing Baby Gorillas”. It covers Hasani and Afia’s hand-rearing journey. The keepers nicknamed Hasani “Wriggles McCraw”. Having filmed Hasani and Afia for such a long time, the book really hit home. A good read, sad in places, but very honest. Baffled by a Food Delay Until the Treats Arrive by SloggerVlogger *Gorillas are left baffled by an unusual lunchtime timing at Twycross Zoo, but the wait pays off with their absolute favourite treats.* It was a pretty hot day, so there wasn't too much happening during the day as the troop kept things nice and relaxed. However, things got very interesting at lunchtime! You can see silverback Oumbi hooting below me , but no sound unfortunately as the crowds were too noisy and as usual when it gets to noisy I change the sound to make it a little more enjoyable. The keepers locked the doors to clean the inside area open. Normally, after the clean is finished, they leave the food ready, but this time they opened it back up without leaving any food. I thought the exact same thing as the gorillas did, thinking they might throw the food straight into the habitat like they sometimes do, but that wasn't the case this time. But then, a little later, they got locked away once again and the mystery was finally solved. The delay was completely worth it as they got assorted food, plus their absolute favourite frozen tomatoes and snack-filled Kongs! Total Troop Commotion with Hooting and Banging at Chester Zoo by SloggerVlogger *Chester Zoo chimpanzee troop where Carlos is causing a stir, Chrissie is playing peacemaker, hoots and clapping and charging.* Back with the Chester Zoo chimpanzee troop today and things are definitely getting a bit lively. It all kicked off with Carlos charging after Sally, but then I spotted Chrissie with baby Cyndi. She lowered herself right in front of Carlos, which effectively says, "I recognise your rank and I am not a threat." It was such a smart move to keep her little one safe. There was plenty of clapping, hooting, and banging against the metal door as the energy climbed. Carlos and Eric communicating with each other, though it looked a bit tense when Carlos started pulling at Eric’s arm! Then ZeeZee decided she’d had enough and had a go at Carlos. He went to run towards her but had to stop abruptly because he got something stuck in his foot. Mandy started getting loud with her hooting as the day wound down, Vila and Dylan in a proper chimp train just before closing time.
