a little recap | the last two years 🧁
Sloane had always had what some people would call "a quiet life". She worked at her dad's bakery, attended her ballet classes, took care of her chickens, and spent time with family and friends... it was quiet and everything she wanted and needed in life. The last two years have had bumps along the road, but have been pretty stable. For the most part.
When people's attention span deteriorated to the point where they started ditching long-form YouTube videos to watch reels and TikToks, Sloane knew she had to make a change to her "online brand". Her videos were barely getting 10,000 views, and her website wasn't getting as many clicks as it used to. Unsure of how to even begin, she resorted to the experts: her then-14-year-old sisters. Excited to finally help their older, zillennial sister be "less cringe", they taught Sloane the ropes on how to use TikTok and reels to her advantage. Her social media accounts started garnering much more attention than she'd had before– so much, she was posting five videos every week, sometimes more.
It all came to a halt, though, when her mom got into an accident. To avoid hitting another driver who'd lost control of their car, barreling towards her on the icy road, she turned the wheel only to crash into a tree. Because of the severity of her injuries, she had to be induced into a coma and then had to spend several weeks in the hospital, and many more recovering at home. Sloane's dad took a step back from the bakery to take care of her and help with her recovery, leaving Sloane in charge of everything.
Not wanting to be a burden to either of them during such a difficult time, Sloane took over her dad's responsibilities while keeping her own and taking care of the twins. It started out fine; she'd bring the twins with her to the bakery at 6 am to start prepping cookies, cakes, and cupcakes, and as soon as the bakery assistant arrived, Sloane would hand over her apron, drive the twins to school, come back, finish prepping, and get ready to open at 8 am, thus starting her 13 hour work day. At 7pm, the twins would arrive from soccer practice, do their homework, and then Sloane would drive them home, make sure they were fed, and then drive back to the bakery to bake as many things as she could to frost in the morning. She would get back home at 12 am, go to sleep, and repeat. It took exactly 2 weeks for Sloane to collapse from exhaustion in The Sweet Spot's kitchen and land herself in the hospital. It was simply not sustainable. Despite her insistence that it was a "blip" and that she just needed to take a day off, drink more water, and have another meal in the day, everyone around her insisted she just hire someone to help out, so she did. She hired a very capable bakery manager with lots of experience, and took a well-deserved 2-day break (because she couldn't stay away for too long). She delegated some of her responsibilities, the twins got rides from friends to go to school and back, and things started getting a little easier again. She was able to focus on cake decorating again
Working at the bakery so much, though, left Sloane with very little time to date or hang out with friends. Now that they have an extra set of hands in the kitchen and her dad is back at the helm, Sloane is looking forward to having more of a life again.

"Ouf. I want to say... eight?" Clare nods. She didn't like looking back on those days because it reminded her of her mom, but then again those days were the happiest. And she learned a lot from looking in the past. It made her who she was today. "It wasn't until sophomore or junior year of highschool that I really got into it." She answered. "Oh. And? Do you like it as much as you'd hope?" Clare asked with a smile before adding, "The Sweet Spot, right? I hear they - or rather you - make the best cinnamon rolls in town."
"You're gonna have to show me some of your work sometime," Sloane said with a smile. "Not really," she chuckled. It was harder than it looked, especially because she had to select the item from the computer rather than scan it, and she found it a little confusing sometimes, especially during a rush. Sloane felt herself blush and she nodded. "Yeah! The Sweet Spot. And god, people really like those cinnamon rolls, don't they?" she laughed and shook her head. "Can I tell you a secret?" she asks, leaning in a bit. "Actually, I don't know if I can, it might be too big a secret."
"My dad used to be a cashier at a grocery store. It wasn't his ideal career, but we got by." More like they survived by the skin of their teeth. "Self-checkout freaks me out, if I'm being honest. I don't like how it knows whether I placed my item in the bagging area."
"I just like scanning the items. The bagging part I never seem to get right, at least according to the machine," she makes a face. "I'll put whatever I just scanned in the bagging area, and then it'll start telling me to either put it in the bagging area - which I already did - or to take it away. Immediately! And you're just standing there, like, what!? What am I doing wrong? And it's worse when there's a line of people just watching you struggle." She pauses. "Other than that, yeah, big fan," she chuckles.
"An astronaut," Marissa answered, taking a sip of her water. "But unfortunately, I was never good enough at math to make that dream come true. What about you? Did you always want to be a baker?"
"I don't think so. I remember being with my dad at the bakery a lot when I was a kid. He'd let me help sometimes. But I just saw it as a fun activity to do every once in a while. I think I wanted to be a ballerina. But I also really wanted to be a cashier at the grocery store. I love how they–" she motioned as if she was scanning an item over the counter– "boop! Scan things," she chuckled. "Still, to this day! I'm a big fan of the self-checkout."
"A pilot. Simply put, the thought of having over one hundred souls on the line and me being responsible for them is not my thing."
Sloane couldn't help but chuckle. "Too much pressure. I don't think I could do it either. Not so much the people, but... heights. I don't know if it's a complex over being so short, but I can't imagine it." She shook her head. "I feel like I would trust you, though. But maybe that's a me problem," she teased.

"A veterinarian, believe it or not. But as soon as I found my first camera that changed drastically. Plus, um, I figured out I don't do too well with death." Clare frowns some before putting back a smile, asking, "What about you? What did you want to be when you grew up?"
Sloane pressed her lips together and nodded slowly. Not a lot of people did too well with death. She was lucky to haven't have lost a lot of people growing up, but lots of pets, and it was rough. She couldn't imagine being a veterinarian. "And how old were you when you picked up your first camera?" she asked. "I can't remember. I think- I mean, that's why I'm so curious about other people right now. I may have wanted to be a dancer. Or a cashier." She smiled. "The second one I do end up doing a lot at the bakery."

“You’re never gonna guess what’s happened.” Talya grinned, “Ya bitch has been invited to come to Twitchcon as a creator!”
"Oh my god!" Sloane exclaimed, excited for her friend. "Wait, and what does this mean? What- what is– I know what Twitchcon is, but what do you do as a- creator?"
"When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?"

"Do you ever wonder if you're going in the right direction in life?" He'd just gotten a call from his parents last night, after avoiding them for a long while, they wanted him and his brother to live with them in L.A. The chance of being an actual family again was a dream come true after years of not being together. But why now? He ate a piece of bubblegum, holding the rest out to the person with him, continuing, "Like I'm realizing my friends are idiots which makes me an idiot. I don't know, man." He laughs.
"All the time." Sloane admitted. It was constant. It didn't used to be; Sloane had always been very confident in herself and the path she'd taken in life, but lately... things had shifted. She loved what she did, but it was hard not to wonder what her life would be like if she made different choices. As small as going out a little more. Taking less shifts at the bakery. Maybe even putting the YouTube thing on hold. "You can always make new friends," she said with a shrug. "Are they at least... kind?"
