What's interesting to me is that in both situations where Reze lost, she was never overpowered but instead outsmarted. She was caught off-guard by Denji using chains and she was caught off-guard by Makima posing as a distraction so Angel could kill her from afar.

Strategy and foresight is what she lacked. This implies that the people who experimented on her only trained her to fight offensively— not to protect herself — because they didn't care about her well-being or survival as long as she completes her missions. This was already obvious but the way her upbringing (and how disposable they viewed her) can be seen even in her combat style is very sad.

There is a contrast between her and Denji here. In this arc, Denji won because of what his companions taught him. Reze taught him how to swim, Angel suggested the chains, Beam provided intel about her (and also acted as support). And of course Aki was there trying to protect him. Reze didn't have anyone looking out for her like that. Her handlers only trained her to brute-force every obstacle and if she doesn't manage to, is expected to just die.

Reze’s iconic “eye twitch” gets memed a lot, but it’s incredible storytelling. Just minutes earlier, she let herself be vulnerable in the pool. In one shot, you see how much she bought into that summer dream, and how painful it was to snap back to reality.

I love how MAPPA leans into the psychological elements. It’s a big reason I try to write Reze from a character-driven angle in my own fic of her. She’s so layered

One moment I love is when Denji makes Reze laugh on the beach. She laughs at his absurdity before, but here it feels different. It’s like she can’t even process someone still being kind to her after the “perfect girl” mask comes off.

I think this is the moment it really sinks in for her that Denji cares about who she actually is. Unconditional affection like that is probably something she’s never experienced. One of Denji’s most empathetic moments for sure.

I like the contrast of Denji and Reze's pool scene and the beach scene. In the pool, they show intimacy by taking off their clothes together. Meanwhile at the beach, the intimacy comes from Denji putting clothes on a naked Reze, showing compassion to her even after all the destruction and pain she brought him. I think that moved her as much as him sparing her life because it's such a small 'unnecessary' kindness.

It's also proof that Denji isn't just a 'gooner creep' like some of the audience misinterprets him to be. We know he finds her sexy but instead of perving over her naked unconscious form, he put his shirt on her to give her some privacy and safety. He's a considerate guy.

This is why the pool scene is important to the character development and themes btw, despite some dumb people calling it 'gooner bait'. It gets recontextualized in the end to indicate their feelings have deepened beyond physical attraction or surface level... perfection.
