ive been gone for TOO long .. also school has started so fics once a week :( instead of twice a week .. LMK if you like thissss!!!!
The first thing Miracle noticed was the paint. For years, the spare bedroom had been exactly that—a spare bedroom. Four pale walls, a lonely dresser, and boxes stacked in the corner that Dean always promised he'd sort through "next weekend." Now it smelled like fresh paint and sawdust. The dog sat in the hallway, head tilted as Dean wrestled with a flat-packed bed frame.
"You bought the wrong screws."
Dean glared at the instruction booklet as if it had personally insulted him.
“.Maybe they packed the wrong screws!"
Castiel smiled to himself but didn't argue. Instead, he quietly retrieved the correct bag from beneath the cardboard.
Dean grumbled something under his breath. Miracle let out a happy huff. Things had changed after Sam and Eileen brought home their newborn. Between midnight feedings and diapers, it made more sense for Miracle to stay with Dean and Cas. At first, Dean joked that he'd only agreed because someone had to eat the scraps from his burgers. The truth was much simpler. The house felt less empty with another heartbeat inside it. Life after hunting had settled into something wonderfully ordinary. Dean spent his mornings at the local mechanic's shop, coming home smelling like motor oil and old engines. Castiel tended rows of wildflowers and buzzing beehives behind their little farmhouse on the edge of town, selling jars of honey at the weekend market. Their neighbors knew them as the quiet married couple with too many flowers and the friendliest golden retriever in the neighborhood.
No one knew about monsters. No one knew about angels. That was exactly how they wanted it. But lately… Something was different. Miracle watched as Dean carried a brand-new mattress upstairs. The next day came soft blue sheets folded neatly at the foot of the bed. After that… A small wooden desk. A reading lamp. A bookshelf that Dean insisted wasn't crooked despite Castiel measuring it three separate times.
"It is leaning two degrees."
Miracle wagged his tail between them. Then came the stuffed animals. Castiel returned from town carrying two bags. Dean peeked inside
Dean picked up the floppy-eared rabbit.
"I thought we agreed not to overdo it."
"I did not believe two stuffed animals qualified as excessive."
Dean looked around the room they'd slowly transformed. He stood in the doorway with his hands shoved into his pockets. Weeks ago, that room had been empty. Now…It looked like someone had always belonged there.
"..Think they'll like dinosaurs?"
Dean asked. Castiel turned.
"I thought you said we were finished buying things."
Dean scratched the back of his neck.
"I know, but... every kid likes dinosaurs, right?"
"I do not believe every child does."
Castiel's expression softened. Dean had been pretending this wasn't affecting him. Pretending every trip to the furniture store wasn't secretly exciting. Pretending he hadn't spent twenty minutes comparing desk chairs because "their back should have support." Pretending he hadn't googled best children's books late one night. Pretending he hadn't carefully picked out glow-in-the-dark stars for the ceiling. But Castiel saw everything. He always had.
"You are already thinking like a father," Castiel said gently.
Dean laughed—a little embarrassed.
"I am merely stating the obvious."
Dean looked back into the room.
"...You really think they'll feel safe here?"
Castiel followed his gaze. Sunlight poured through the curtains. The bed looked warm. The stuffed rabbit leaned against the teddy bear as if waiting. Miracle wandered inside, circled the rug twice, and curled up beneath the bed with a satisfied sigh. Castiel smiled.
"I believe that this house has already begun making room for them."
Dean stood there for another long moment. Then, almost absentmindedly, he reached over and straightened the teddy bear.
"...Still think we need dinosaur sheets."
"We shall purchase dinosaur sheets, but just in case, we're getting one with bees and flowers"
Neither of them said it aloud. Not yet. The adoption paperwork was still moving through the system. There were interviews ahead, home visits, background checks, and months of waiting before a child would ever set foot in their home. But every shelf they built. Every blanket they folded. Every storybook they placed on the nightstand. Every tiny choice whispered the same promise into the quiet house. And it was all for you
the rain tapped on the window of the impala.. Dean parked outside the buildings and let out a shaky breath. He had shut off the impalas engine and looked to Cas.
Castiel looked out the passenger window toward the small brick building. Children laughed somewhere inside, though the sound was muffled by the rain.
"I believe the more important question is whether they are."
Dean swallowed. Months. It had taken months. Home studies.Paperwork. Interviews.Waiting. More waiting. And then, three days ago, the phone call. A child needs a home. Now they were here.Dean rubbed sweaty palms on his jeans.
"I've faced demons bigger than houses."
Castiel reached over and squeezed his hand.
Dean laughed under his breath.
Inside, everything smelled faintly of crayons and coffee. A social worker greeted them with a warm smile.
"They're a little anxious,"
she admitted as she led them down the hallway.
"New situations are difficult."
"They don't have to talk today. They don't have to hug you. They don't have to smile. Just...let them go at their own pace."
Castiel inclined his head.
The social worker stopped outside a small room. Through the narrow window, Dean caught a glimpse of a child sitting on the floor with a book open in their lap. You weren't really reading. Just staring at the pages. Your backpack sat beside you .It looked old. Overstuffed. Like everything they owned fit inside it. Dean's chest tightened. The social worker knocked gently before opening the door.
The child looked up. Their shoulders immediately stiffened.
the social worker said softly.
Silence. The child looked at Dean. Then Castiel. Then back down at the book. Dean resisted every urge to fill the silence. Instead, he crouched a few feet away so he wasn't towering over them.
"I'm Dean, the guy right there is cas..”
Cas raised his hand and gave a small wave and a smile, you gave a nod and dean chuckled.. The social worker walked out giving y'all three privacy, one of your arms was wrapped tightly around your bag, the bag that carried your whole life..
“I uh.. I heard you like books.”
Cas said gently in his gruff voice
“I do too, history books to be exact.. And books about nature”
You blinked.. Dean chuckled
“Cas, they're reading a fantasy story.. You read history and nature books.. I'm not sure you two can relate”
Cas looked to you with a pathetic little head tilt as to ask for your backup.. You just shrugged and looked back to Dean.
The drive home was quite, Dean put in a cassette of softer music instead of his old man rock like he usually did.. He didn't want to scare you off..the ride was long and tiring.. When you three arrived at their home, cas opened the door for you, when you stepped out you saw Dean had already got your bag from the trunk, he smiled down at you with a stupid smirk and beckoned you with his head to follow him.. You followed, cas closed the car door behind you and dean reached into his pocket to lock the car. When you three arrived to the front door, Cas had unlocked the house, letting you and Dean in first.
Immediately after walking in, you're greeted by a dog looking at you curiously, you smile and walk towards him.. He barks at you then walks to Dean.
“I know bud, they're staying here now.. More cuddles for you.. Yeahhh good boyyyy.”
Dean dragged his words as he scratched behind the rather obedient dog's ear, you felt Castiel place his hand on your shoulder and gently guide you to your room.
“So kid, this is uh.. Your room..”
Dean said awkwardly.. You could tell he wasn't used to this.. You didn't mind, it was amusing to see.
“Do you wanna be aloneeee or?”
“You two can stay.. I don't mind, I wanna know y'all more."
You said as politely as you can, dean smiled and sat on the edge of your bed and placed your bag down.
“Okay! Whatcha wanna know?”
That first night was quiet, but it was the kind of quiet that felt safe. For the first time in what felt like forever, there were no unfamiliar walls, no uncertainty, and no wondering what tomorrow would bring. The house felt warm and lived-in, filled with small sounds that slowly became comforting-the hum of the television, the creaking of the old floors, and the occasional bark from Miracle as he explored every corner like he owned the place.
As the evening went on, you began learning about the people who were now part of your life. There was Sam and Eileen, your new aunt and uncle, who lived a little farther away and had recently welcomed a baby of their own. Then there was Gabriel, another one of Cas's brothers. Cas explained that Gabriel didn't visit often, but whenever he did, he brought a kind of energy that made every room feel brighter.
It was strange realizing that you didn't just have a new home. You had a family. You also discovered something that surprised you almost immediately-neither Dean nor Cas knew how to cook. Despite everything they had faced in their lives, despite all the years they spent surviving on the road, making a proper meal was somehow beyond both of them. So instead of pretending they knew what they were doing, the three of you started learning together.
The kitchen became a place of trial and error. There were messy counters, questionable recipes, and plenty of moments where even Miracle seemed unsure about what was happening. But somehow, the food always tasted better because you made it together. After dinner, the three of you settled into the living room for a movie night. Naturally, Dean picked an old cowboy movie.
It was exactly the kind of thing you expected him to choose-a dusty western filled with horses, dramatic stares, and long scenes of people walking through empty landscapes. You didn't understand why he enjoyed it so much, but watching him enjoy it made it easier to sit through. You sat between Dean and Cas on the couch, surrounded by the warmth of their presence. Dean rested an arm along the back of the sofa behind you, relaxed and comfortable. Every so often, he laughed at certain scenes, especially when the cowboys did something unexpected. You didn't quite understand what was so funny, but you found yourself smiling anyway.
It wasn't really about the movie. It was about being there. About having a place on the couch. About being included. As the movie continued, the exhaustion of the day slowly caught up with you. The excitement, the nerves, the overwhelming realization that this was your new life—it all settled into a quiet tiredness. Your eyes grew heavier. Your head slowly began to drift to the side. At first, you fought to stay awake, wanting to experience every second of this new normal. But eventually, sleep won.
Without realizing it, you leaned against Dean's chest. He noticed immediately. The movement was small, but he felt it. The shift from someone sitting beside him to someone trusting him enough to fall asleep against him. Dean's expression softened as he looked down at you, and he quietly caught Cas's attention. Neither of them moved. Neither wanted to disturb you. Because for the first time since you arrived, you looked peaceful. Not guarded. Not afraid. Just safe. And in that moment, both of them knew that every late night spent filling out paperwork, every piece of furniture they built, and every little detail they prepared for your arrival had been worth it.
i love this sosososososo much :3... lmk if y'all want more of this, OR request something ^/////^
