Here’s the thing: authors know when they get a rec on an older story. There’s a telltale uptick of kudos (with a 10-15% comment rate if you’re lucky) in your digest email.

The thing is, there’s no way to know where these people are coming from. In the before, when fandom was more in the corners we all knew about, you could search LJ or a message board or whatever social bookmarking site we were using. You could join the community and participate.

You could get a little dopamine hit by seeing someone tell their friends why they loved your story.

Anymore, those recs are hidden in discords, or in tiktoks or instagram slideshows that you can’t search for. They’re inaccessible, not discoverable unless you’re already there. You may never know why 27 people left kudos on an old story of yours, what they liked and found in your writing. You just get the thumbs up and a kinda lonely feeling, cause these could be your people. You could like them, maybe. You could be friends.

But you’ll never find out why they stopped by, or what people are saying about you behind your back, and that’s sad.

So thank you to the people who still do public rec lists on this webbed site. You are my sunshine, and I’m appreciative of all of you.

I love how Boyfriend™️ Shane becomes with Ilya at the cottage. He’s picking him up from the airport. He’s carrying in his suitcase. He’s making hamburgers on the grill. He’s lighting campfires and holding Ilya in his lap and scaring off loons. Shane Hollander might be surprised when Ilya pulls out the boyfriend word at dinner with his parents but this man has been training his whole life to be a Boyfriend™️

I have this headcanon where Shane is the more butch between the two. I imagine his dad taught him how to be handy around the house, how to do some minor construction/repairs, how to start a campfire, and he enjoys the outdoors, and maybe did scouts when he was a boy. And in contrast, Ilya grew up as a slick, city boy in Moscow and hated the wilderness and hires people to fix things and is like afraid of spiders.

Btw, in this headcanon Ilya just *loves* when Shane goes Boyfriend™️ mode (and later Husband™️ mode). Ilya loves watching that man mow the grass and repair the deck. He loves being taken care of by Shane, and especially loves it when he does it in front of people. Neither are emasculated by the other in the ways they embody their own masculinity within the relationship. It just balances them out and turns each other on.

recently saw a comment section full of people, primarily women, talking about loving living with their best friend and being sad about having to live separately one day. some people talking about missing living with their best friend, some talking about “getting” to live with their best friend “until” they find partners. saw one person mention that moving out to move in with a partner felt like a divorce. it makes me so genuinely sad… all these people recognizing the joy they can find living outside the norm, letting themself live with a friend instead of a romantic partner, but still feeling like they have to live with a spouse eventually. like it’s not even a decision, just an inevitability.

put rainbow laces on all my shoes recently which is fun and sexy but has the side effect that i have gotten multiple "i like your shoelaces" from strangers and like. i cant NOT "i stole them from the president" in return. just in case. but its recieved mostly awkward laughs and looks of confusion. embarrasing myself in public out here over my damn shoelaces.
