Vendors in Thailand
I took hundreds of images which illustrated the layout of the Thai markets; from adorable clusters to vast sprawls. However, in this series, I have chosen to focus on individual vendors fulfilling their hectic roles.
Chiang Mai- This is one of my favourite pictures because I feel it really epitomises the friendly, hardworking bustle of the marketplace. The traditional fruit and veg centre was brimming with locals who had no time to cater for the bumbling tourists- simply showcasing their delicious produce and negotiating very little.
Phuket- The harsh halogen lighting gives an almost clinical vibe to this more modern market. The nature of the sushi server was far more reserved than the lady in Chiang Mai. This stall was unusual in that the delicacy was precision engineered, clashing with the mess of the surrounding buzz.
Bangkok- This stall sold one thing only- fried chicken. The young and charming server won customers through an American accent and a tossing out free (and very delicious) tasters.
Phuket- This lady was by far the most no-nonsense which I came across. Clearly disapproving of the man using a gopro, I can understand her thought process- “just eat it!”
Building Blocks
London- I feel the interaction between the over-exposed sky and converging gothic architecture creates a sense of doom and intimidation. To personify these images, this building certainly seems to be sneering at the worthless photographer below.
Positano- In this case, the buildings remind me of a wealthy eccentric; the Willy Wonka of the series.
Bangkok- although the inhabitants of these apartments are in similar close quarters to those in Positano, the opulence is removed. This area was far from a tourist spot and yet it retained the joy and sense of community that I witnessed in Italy.
Bangkok- I love the way in which the bright sun unites the patchwork of different buildings by casting them all in the same tone.
Bangkok- this abandoned building has a grungy feel reminds me of an awkward sulky teenager.
Boston- this was intended as a caricature of the American city workers’ treadmill. I believe it is successful in conveying entrapment and the strive for eventual monetary success after an arduous climb to the top.
Smokers
The solo smoker creates a strange hiatus in which they can reflect and observe. The first two photos were taken at the Barras market in the East End of Glasgow; the third in central Edinburgh during the Fringe Festival. I feel these work well as a B&W trio.
This lady didn’t notice she was clogging up a busy pavement despite many rude protests- she appears to be lost in her own thoughts.
This man was bargaining at the butcher’s stall but paused to enjoy his smoke.
This lady was perched down a side street, away from the commotion of the festival.
The final photo in this feature is a quick snap which was taken in Bangkok, of a Tuk-Tuk driver pausing for a smoke. The man was in a queue of traffic in a packed tourist area and had paused outside the crammed temple (Wat Pho) to pray and roll a cigarette. As a non-smoker myself, these images provoke an unexpected sense of jealousy; these individuals have a physical device which enables them to pause in the midst of chaos. I think this is conveyed particularly due to all the images being captured in very busy environments (despite little visible background). I do, of course, note the morbid irony of this observation- each moment of reflection spent smoking snatches away at a moment at the end of that person’s life.
Welcome!
Welcome to Slants. This blog arose from a desire to showcase the photographs which I have taken over the past six years. Each post centres around a different theme and most contain images taken at various stages of my camera experience. In general, most images were not the result of much technical skill and so for this reason that I have experimented heavily with editing; reality has often undergone a lot of processing before reaching this page (hence ‘slants’). I hope that I am able to convey a sense of my own personal style and love for this hobby.
