ok so i'm a brown girl who's just getting into makeup and! i'd like to try some highlighter because it looks gorgeous af but idk where to start. any suggestions? only if you aren't busy!
hi!! i think the best thing to do when looking for a good highlighter is to figure out what your undertones are and what youâre going for in terms of the finishâfor example, if you have warm undertones and want a really subtle highlight, youâll probably need a different highlighter than someone who has cool undertones and wants a stronger highlight. iâm not sure what your undertones are (warm, cool, or neutral), but i know that gold and rose gold tend to complement brown girls pretty well, so maybe try looking for a highlighter in one of those colors!Â
i have to admit that i only actually own one highlighter, but i really love it! itâs avalon by colourpop and it has this really pretty rose gold finish. it was also only $8! colourpopâs website actually sorts all of their highlighters by color/undertone so once you figure out what color you want, you can find one that suits you! Â
if you just want to start out with a basic true gold, though, candyman  and lunch money from colourpop look like good options! one thing i like about colourpop products is that theyâre really easy to put on with your fingers, but i personally use a real techniques fan brush to put my highlighter on.Â
(iâve also heard great things about makeup revolution highlighters, which are pretty inexpensive too! i know a lot of people rave about the becca highlighters and other high-end ones, but those are really pricey given that youâre just starting out, so iâd recommend getting something less expensive so you can really play with it)
in terms of putting the highlight on, i think itâs a good idea to kind of play around with it and see what you like! try highlighting the tops of your cheekbones, the tip of your nose, your cupidâs bow, etc etc until you figure out what you like on your face! i personally just highlight my cheeks but i know some people like to highlight their noses and more parts of their face for a glowier look.Â
also, if you accidentally put too much highlighter on (which happens easily w/ really pigmented products like colourpop), grab a clean powder brush and just sweep it over the highlighted area to kind of diffuse the product and blend it out more. alternatively, if you use setting powder (tinted or translucent), take a little bit of that and dust it over the highlight/blend it out, that might have more of an effect than just using a clean powder brush alone.Â
i think thatâs about everything i can think of for now, but please let me know if you have any more questions and iâll do my best to help! let me know what you end up going for!Â
edit: i forgot to mention this, but you can also use a shimmery eyeshadow as a highlighter if you want!Â
