After Sappho by Selby Wynn Schwartz (Galley Beggar Press, 2022/2023)
added!
"But Lina Poletti was a brash young poet who believed that if you wanted someone, you wrote verses that poured violets in her lap. You led her down to dewy riverbanks in the evening and you made sure that when she arose again, mosses feathery in her hair, she would never be the same." - Selby Wynn Schwartz, After Sappho

Uncommon light academia book recommendation: After Sappho by Selby Wynn Schwartz
Told through a series of interweaving vignettes, After Sappho tells the tale of real life feminists who were inspired by the poetry of Sappho
Long listed for the Booker Prize, this book is a piece of modern literature. Almost without plot, it ebbs and flows. Academia and arts, from dance and film to painting and furniture design, are celebrated, along with women who excelled at their crafts. After Sappho feels like an inspiration, as if it encourages the reader to pave their own way in the world, be that through literature or visual arts.
“ Readers according to Colette were like lovers. The best were attentive, intelligent, exigent, and promiscuous. She urged us to read widely and well, to seek out precisely the novels prohibited to us and lie down for hours in bed with them. We should read to gorge and sate ourselves, Colette enjoined us; after a good book we should lick our fingers. We should especially read the lives of women…”
After Sappho, Selby Wynn Schwartz
“A poet is someone who stands on the door sill and sees the room as a sea whose waves she might dive through. … A poet is someone who swims inexplicably away from the shore, only to arrive at an island of her own invention.”

With her hair trailing behind her, milky and brilliant, she makes the whole cosmos luminous. She knows how to float softly on the hardest of surfaces, her body moves between the world and a dream.

Book 1.
First book of 2026 completed. This was a delightful read about the friendship that formed between Helene Hanff and the staff at a London bookstore, especially the manager Frank Doel. I loved all the letter writing and how much love of books was in it. Helene was funny and quite a character. Frank was and quietly hilarious. I am so glad I chose this book first.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

There is only one way to read, which is to browse in libraries and bookshops, picking up books that attract you, reading only those, dropping them when they bore you, skipping the parts that drag — and never, never reading anything because you feel you ought, or because it is part of a trend or a movement. Remember that the book which bores you when you are twenty or thirty will open doors for you when you are forty or fifty — and vice versa. Don’t read a book out of its right time for you.
—Doris Lessing, The Golden Notebook, Introduction (1971)
