It was late on the 14th February when Bea finally slumped against the table in exhaustion. “Finally…” she breathed out, giving herself a few moments to rest before looking on at her project.
It had been a long few days, since she had decided to spread a little fun this year for Valentines. She admittedly was out of the loop with who had moved the Valley or were visiting, so she had had to ask local friends for details.
Having managed to make at least one edible batch of honey cupcakes (the previous attempts by Kath and her were so miserable that they had to enlist Caroline’s help) she got to work decorating them with frosting and little bee sugar charms, and they had sourced some cute yellow and black cupcake cups that rounded the theme up. Kath had already sampled a few, making sure they were good, and Bea set about the next step.
She asked Emily to source fabrics, who was more than happy to oblige - and before long they had either found or custom dyed fabric to make into little gift bags. They even dyed some ribbon in the colour of Bea’s hair - a little indulgent touch, but Bea liked to think that the recipients might remember her from the ribbon as “that weird girl with the mulberry hair”. She had gained enough information on farmers she had yet to properly meet:
For Julian, she admired the fact he obtained his PHD, something she never managed to do, and she found out of his love for mushrooms, particularly red toadstools.
Barclay, having crafted an impressive wood carving for Bea, was given a wood fabric, in appreciation of his masterful hobby. Bea wanted to make sure her new “dad friend” was settling in well.
Lahlas, the small monster culler, reminded Bea of autumn and the way the leaves changed into beautiful ochre colours. She had heard of Lahlas’ baking skills, and hoped her own creations met to such impressive standards.
She heard about Dylan, a man who lived in the lighthouse and had a passion for fish, and decided a seafoam pudding fabric would suit him well. The lighthouse was one of her favourite landmarks on the coast.
Kaibara sounded like an adorable feisty young woman, who had a love of blue jazz flowers, so the fabric they found looked perfect for her. She hoped she could get to know her a bit better, and maybe learn a few dance moves off her.
Having seen so many different species in the Valley and in the mines, hearing of Lilypad did not surprise Bea too much, and she hoped the namesake fabric would be a nice present. She wasn’t sure if Lilypad could eat cake, but she hoped the gesture counted.
Ashling seemed a very gentle young man, who especially adored flowers - his fabric was adorned with sunflowers, and Bea made sure to put in some extra small roses she had picked from her own flower garden.
The two surfers who had been stuck with a broken down kombie Reece and Kira-Lee sounded like good fun, and Bea made a mental note to go down to them at some point to see if they needed anything. Since they were very much in tune with the ocean, it seemed almost too perfect for them to receive fabric adorned with ocean waves.
And a bag for Kuro, with a fabric as dark as his name, with the moon and stars adorned upon it. Bea was extra careful with this package, as earlier that morning she had found a gift from him on her doorstep.
166 definitely didn’t sound like your average farmer, and Bea hoped that the fabric that looked like a mechanical sci-fi setting would be suitable. After all, she’d heard from others that she liked to eat batteries…
And a bag for Aether, a newcomer she had only just discovered, living above the bathhouse tending to the small garden that Bea liked to visit now and then. She knew Aether had a tendency for iridium rocks, so the fabric decorated with vibrant purple gems was very appropriate.
Having caught her breath and rested her aching fingers from tying the ribbons, each one holding a small label with each recipient’s portrait (she had a LOT of help from Leah and Damien for this), Bea stood back up in search of a basket to carry the gifts in.
“Alright, time to do the rounds!” she smiled to herself, as Snickony looked up at her with lazy eyes by the fireplace.
