NASA Takes βRoseβ Galaxy Photo for Hubble Telescope Anniversary
Who knew we had a βrose-shapedβ galaxy in space? The astronomers who run the Hubble Space Telescope did. In celebration of the 21st anniversary of the Hubble Space Telescopeβs deployment into space, astronomers at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Maryland, pointed Hubbleβs eye to an especially photogenic group of interacting galaxies called Arp 273.
The larger of the spiral galaxies, known as UGC 1810, has a disk that is tidally distorted into a rose-like shape by the gravitational tidal pull of the companion galaxy below it, known as UGC 1813. A swath of blue jewels across the top is the combined light from clusters of intensely bright and hot young blue stars. These massive stars glow fiercely in ultraviolet light.

Star formation can be colorful. This colourful portrait features glowing gas and dark dust near some recently formed stars of NGC 3572, a star cluster near the Carina Nebula. Stars from NGC 3572 are visible near the bottom of the image, while the expansive gas cloud above is likely what remains of their formation nebula. This nebula spans about 100 light years and lies about 9,000 light years away toward the southern constellation of Carina. Within a few million years the pictured gas will likely disperse, while gravitational encounters will likely disperse the cluster stars over about a billion years.

Announcing Nova Carinae 2018 : How bright will Nova Carinae 2018 become? The new nova was discovered only last week. Although novas occur frequently throughout the universe, this nova, cataloged as ASASSN-18fv, is so unusually bright in the skies of Earth that it is now easily visible through binoculars in the southern hemisphere. Identified by the arrow, the nova occurs near the direction of the picturesque Carina Nebula. A nova is typically caused by a thermonuclear explosion on the surface of a white dwarf star that is accreting matter from a binary companion, although details of this outburst are currently unknown. Both professional and amateur astronomers will be monitoring this unusual stellar outburst in the coming weeks, looking to see how Nova Carinae 2018 evolves, including whether it becomes bright enough to be visible to the unaided eye. via NASA
