Can we talk about sleep? 💤😴💤 I'm tired, honestly. I'm spending a lot of time in the deep levels of working on my doctorate while trying to maintain the rest of life, too. I knew this was the reality going on, so this isn't a pity party, just a baseline for the convo. This level of tiredness isn't meant to be a lifestyle. It's a temporary phase, like having a baby who gives up naps or isn't sleeping because they're teething, or a temporary crunch because your partner for such and you're pulling extra duty on that project that's due Tuesday l. There are pockets of time where we're probably going to be stretched a little thin. For a little while. Here's the problem. Our culture has glamorized exhaustion. Wanna be successful? Get up at 3am so you can go the the gym before putting in a 16 hour day. Learn how to biohack your body to squeeze a little more performance out of a lot less sleep! And when people ask you how you are, make sure you say, "Man, I'm busy, but it's great!" even though you're actually killing yourself from stress and sleep deprivation. And the rates of insomnia... Holy hell. You know what I'm talking about. It's not good. We used to say "Work smarter, not harder." Now we talk about ways to slice and dice our calendars to get an extra couple hours' worth of work out of the space time continuum, and we idolize people who brag that they do all this on 3 hours of sleep and a power greens smoothie. And our youngest generations are hitting burnout faster than anyone could have imagined. That should freak you out. It certainly has me worried. I've already had my fill of seeing my kid in ICU because they fell asleep driving home... You don't want to go there. We've really got to rethink the entire narrative around success. And to do that, we need to have our brains working well, and they can't do that when we're treating them like prisoners of war. Let's take a better-rested path forward. It's there waiting for us! I love this. I have a collaborator who said, "Hey, can we move that meeting a little earlier in the week? I'm trying to schedule a tech detox day." Heck yeah we can! That's some solid self-advocating there and I know how frazzled many of us feel these days. I'm happy to accommodate so that when they come back they're recharged, refreshed and ready to dive back in. I am working for the day when people are generally less frazzled as a baseline. Raise your hand if life's got some unpleasant or just downright difficult challenges right now. ✋🏻✋🏼✋🏽 Literally everyone I know or meet is juggling some heavy stuff. It starts to feel like an emotional black hole sometimes, and while I truly do my best to maintain a robust level of hope, optimism, gratitude and yes, happiness, sometimes that's easier said than done. I'm lucky to have built both a brand based on happiness, and, more crucially, a support network of family, friends and colleagues who are amazing humans, too. I have spaces where I feel safe trusting these folks with the realness of my life. It makes such a difference, y'all. I spent decades behind walls I built out of fear, and I don't judge anyone who's doing the same thing right now. Sometimes that IS your best option in the moment. If you want to move out into the light, though, know that there are people who care. Probably more than you know about, especially if you're in "distressed armadillo" mode (by which I mean rolled up tight just hoping to survive).
