In Australia, the standard recommendation for renewing CPR certification (HLTAID009: Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) is every 12 months. This is the benchmark set by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and is the requirement most workplaces, regulatory bodies, and industry standards are built around. If you hold a role that involves any duty of care, annual renewal is what is expected of you. One of the most important reasons to keep your certification current is that resuscitation guidelines are not static. The Australian Resuscitation Council periodically updates its guidance based on emerging research. For example, changes to compression-to-breath ratios, defibrillator protocols, and airway management techniques have all been revised over the years. When you renew your CPR certification, you are learning the current standard of care, not the one that existed a few years ago. CPR and First Aid are often confused, but they are separate certifications with different renewal periods:

• HLTAID009 – Provide CPR: Recommended renewal every 12 months • HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid: Recommended renewal every 3 years

If you hold a combined First Aid and CPR certificate, your CPR component still needs to be refreshed annually, even if your First Aid certificate has not technically expired. Some industries and employers do not just follow the ARC recommendation, they mandate it. If you work in any of those sectors, check your enterprise agreement, registration body requirements, or employer policy. Do not wait for your supervisor to flag it as expired certification can affect your compliance status and your ability to work legally in some regulated roles.
