When you’re introduced to the name button earlier, the Narrator advertises that the button will be able to say the name of any player to help personalize The Stanley Parable 2 (tm) but at the time of the game can only say the name ‘jim’.

In order to hype it up, the Narrator tells you to role play as Jim by imagining ourselves in his feet- everything from imagining having dreams as Jim to imagining having your heart broken as Jim. At the time it plays out as a joke, but throughout the game we are actually doing that with Stanley.

Through all of the endings we go through all sorts of experiences through Stanley; we escape a mind control facility and find true happiness as Stanley, we are given the illusion of a home and a wife and have it ripped from us as Stanley, and we even have one-sided conversations with the Narrator as Stanley with minimal reference to the player.

By the time we come across these buttons, we’re near the end of Ultra Deluxe, which means that by then the player has likely been through most of the endings and is used to ‘roleplaying’ Stanley. You start hearing the name Jim again as you hit the buttons, fully expecting the name each time, and then-

“Stanley.”
