Jason already kinda looks like a living doll tbh.
Worth mentioning I've also been watching through Twin Peaks for the first time. And it's very obvious that this show wants to be a modern Twin Peaks.
This might be a stretch but Bettie's unrequited feelings have an interesting framing. I've never watched teen dramas so, maybe there's some like common tropes or genre-language I'm not picking up on but the framing of Bettie's crush makes it almost seem like, it's not just that Archie doesn't return her feelings, it's that he CAN'T (which makes it extra tragic). It kinda reminds of the "queer character falls for a straight character and it's all very tragic trope" like you might see in films like Farewell My Concubine. Except here it's between two characters that are supposed to be straight. Although again, maybe I'm just reaching.
It also not for nothing, that the closet thing Archie has to a real "romantic" relationship is defined by manipulation. While I don't love the way the show kinda treats it as just like a sort of run-of-the-mill scandalous relationship and not an emotionally vulnerable teenager being preyed on by an adult, from the start Grundey is portrayed as an obstacle to Archie doing what he feels is the right thing to do.
Archie protects Grundey (so far) because he feels he HAS to but it's not really what he WANTS to do. It's kind of an escalation of the themes from the first episode.

I'm considering watching the first season of Riverdale just to see if I can construct a reading of Archie Andrews as an Ace guy who feels like he has to preform hyper-sexuality because it's whats expected of him as a teenage boy and manly Footballer™.
Guess what what I started doing today lol
The scene where Veronica and Archie first meet is interesting. It's clearly set up like a "love at first sight" thing with solo-mo and music drowning out the dialogue but it's also weirdly off, like not quite there. Like Veronica is in this big cloak that just drapes over her. There's not really any close-ups on her, there's this kind of distance between her and the camera. The lighting makes everything look kinda yellow.
IDK it just doesn't really read as romantic or sexy to me, and it's supposed to be from Archie's perspective.
I'm not that far in but so much of the sexuality of this show is like, it's happening AT Archie. He's like a passive target for people to find sexy but he doesn't seem to be like actively participating in it. (Granted I've seen a LOT of spoilers for this show so I know that might change soon)
Also, It's the first episode so maybe it's a necessary evil but I swear ever bit dialogue has been like "Oh, so let me tell you about my character trait.", "First, Let me remind you of this piece of world building, "But did you hear about [character]'s history with blah, blah, blah, blah." It's just a lot for like the first 15 minutes.
This show also kinda has the High School Musical thing were jocks can't do other things besides be jocks. IDK, maybe we hadn't quite moved past that culturally on the late 2010s but I feel like when I was in high-school there were a few guys that were on a sports team but also did the school play and it wasn't like shocking. My kid brother did that for a bit actually, not all the way through high school but he was on a baseball team for most his school-career and he also dabbled in choir and band, it wasn't like a huge thing.
"I have never felt. . . whatever it is I'm supposed to feel. . ."
"with Betty."
Maybe I am fully just projecting but the emphasis Archie puts on friendships feels like a very Ace thing to me. Like it feels obvious to me that he puts a lot of importance on his friendship with Betty and seems genuinely upset when it gets described as "just friends".
After having some time to digest the first episode I have to say you don't have to look that deep for queer reading at all.
Sexuality™ is very prominent in the show even in scenes where it's not especially relevant (I thought the cheer-leading lesbian kiss would make more sense in context but it doesn't. I'm still not sure what she was trying to do there). So it stands out more that Archie is often dismissive, oblivious, or on the receiving end of Sexuality. Like I said before it's happening AT him, not naturally coming FROM him. Even with the three relationships we see in the show: It's implied Grundey came on to him and I don't know if we're supposed to read it differently but he seems genuinely like he wants to move on, he was taken totally off guard when Bettie wanted to be a couple, and in the closet scene Veronica kisses him first.
Plus his character arc so far is all about a conflict between what people expect him to do (especially people in authority) vs. what actually makes him happy.
And I wanna say again, I know what happens in the rest of the show but I feel like if I had gone in completely blind, this would kinda read to me as a set up to later reveal that Archie is queer.

You’re not depressed. You just need $250,000 in your bank account.

Here's the thing about homeschooling that I think non-homeschooled kids don't and can't understand. You can have the best parents on the planet with the best intentions on the planet and homeschool will still seriously fuck you up. There is no way to do it ethically. I know because I basically had the best possible homeschooling experience.
My parents pulled me for the fourth grade, and I was homeschooled until the end of high school. Nine entire years. They pulled me from the public schools for a perfectly reasonable reason — my mental health was in the toilet and I needed to be away from other kids who might hurt me as they had spent all of my third grade year doing. My mom has a fucking PhD in neuroscience and tutors math professionally. She was, during the ten years that my siblings and I were homeschooled, the best, kindest, most caring, understanding, lovely teacher you could ask for.
But I'm still broken. That's the thing about homeschool. You can have the best experience possible in homeschool and still come out a fundamentally broken person. My social development stopped at the age of 10. I'm a 22 year old adult woman with the social skills of a 10 year old. That's not to say that that COULDN'T have happened in public school, but being homeschooled only made it more of a certainty. Both of my siblings and I have fewer coping strategies on average than our peers with similar neurodivergencies because we basically did not live in the real world for a decade during key developmental years.
Don't ban homeschooling because of the religious nuts. There are plenty of them. Hell, I KNEW plenty of them. But there are also plenty of quote unquote "good" homeschool families. Ones that do everything you would hope the model homeschool family does. And they are still hurting their children, even if unintentionally, because homeschooling is an inhrently traumatic experience. It's isolating. For seven entire years of my life, I had no friends. Not because I was a social outcast, but because I didn't even SEE anybody regularly enough. But, nonetheless, I knew people. You generally do if you get involved in the community.
Ban homeschooling because it breaks and utterly destroys everyone who goes through it.
Everyone.
I'm sorry, Lauren. I'm sorry, Kade. I'm sorry to the boy whose name I can no longer remember. I'm sorry that I survived and you didn't.
Homeschooling was probably the best possible way for me to get educated, given my particularly blend of neurodivergence: It still messed me up terribly bad, and I was one of the luckiest ones. For most kids it was far, far worse.
I agree 100%
