usually,     freddie   likes   effy’s   teasing.   she   has   a   certain   way   of   knowing   exactly   what   he’s   after   (   her,   specifically   )   and   making   him   suffer   for   it.   she   also   has   a   way   of   never   showing   her   hand,   even   when   it   might   benefit   her.   freddie   wonders   now   what   he   cards   are,   and   what   might   have   to   transpire   for   her   to   finally   let   him   know   what   it   is   she   really   wants.

perhaps   it   doesn’t   matter   what   she   really   wants,   now   that   he’s   gone   and   fucked   the   whole   thing   up.   he   is   revolted   by   himself   &   by   his   inability   to   turn   down   any   opportunity   that   presents   itself.   (   a   small   part   of   him   wonders   if   he   would   have   felt   so   bad,   had   he   not   potentially   gotten   caught,   but   he   presses   down   the   thought   ).   

the   jacket’s   on   the   ground   before   freddie   has   time   to   think   of   a   response.   the   night   wind   is   picking   up,   whipping   his   hair   back   and   forth   as   grabs   the   jacket   and   takes   off   after   her.   he   curses   under   his   breath,   wondering   if   this   chase   is   some   kind   of   punishment.   wondering   if   she   saw   anything   at   all,   or   if   he   is   just   being   paranoid.    

freddie   isn’t   the   type   to   hold   grudges,   but   this   wound   is   fresh.   he’s   still   resentful   of   his   father’s   decision   to   upend   them   and   move   to   a   completely   different   country.   (“work   is   better   their,   kiddo.   you’ll   understand   someday.”)   it’s   his   last   year   of   school   (   apparently,   they   call   it   senior   year   here.   completely   stupid.   )   &   he   wants   to   spend   it   the   least   sober   as   possible   with   his   mates,   not   down   in   the   middle   of   some   stupid   town   called   forks,   trying   to   rebuild   a   life   he   never   wanted   to   leave   in   the   first   place.

nevertheless,   he   enters   the   school   building,   as   he’s   told   to   do.   he   also   makes   his   way   down   to   the   principal’s   office   to   meet   his   ‘mentor.’   he’s   come   armed   with   a   couple   spliffs   in   his   pocket,   should   the   occasion   arise.   maybe   whoever   his   mentor   is   likes   to   light   up,   too.

he   knocks   lightly   before   stepping   in   the   room.   he’s   somewhat   surprised   to   see   a   rather   pretty   girl,   accompanied   by   an   old   man   with   white   hair   and   glasses   that   must   be   the   principal.
