Lord Lorcan Lochan had been up for hours. Elide was nestled into his chest, snoring softly and twitching her fingers occasionally. They’d finally stopped to rest, perranth was still half a day away. It would be his home for the rest of the time they had together.
How could he sleep? It wasn’t just the thought of finding his new home waiting for him and Elide but… What Maeve had forced him to endure. All he could see when he closed his eyes were those cold unfeeling eyes.
Did you really think I’d sully myself for you?
Mate? Why would you ever think you were entitled to such a thing after all you have done?
All of the things she had said were true.
She had a title, friends, people who cared if she lived.
What did he have? He served a valg queen. Valg. The monsters who had conquered her home and had no doubt left it in a bloody ruin.
He didn’t deserve her. He didn’t know why he ever thought the universe would even think about giving him a mate; especially Elide.
But he could not ignore that snap that had sounded in his head when they’d first joined bodies. He couldn’t ignore the way her scent made his blood sing in delight.
He tried to push aside that little rope that connected their minds together.
Lorcan held her body tighter against his own, inhaling her scent.
He dreaded the day she realized he was not fit for her, the day she truly thought what she had said in the hallucination Maeve had weaved together.

She deserves someone who didn’t make strangers cower at his presence alone. Deserved someone who wasn’t anything like him.
The sun had risen slightly above the horizon, painting the sky various shades of red. Elide stirred in his arms and he loosened his grip on her. She looked up at him with sleepy eyes and smiled when she saw him. And he wondered if it was the last time he would see those beautiful rosebud lips curve.
