Should luxe brands open more shops across Africa?
Recently I read an op-ed by Johanna Collins-Wood on the Business of Fashion, click here for the opinion piece, in which she pressed top luxury brands of the world to move pass their ill-conceived notions of the great continent of Africa and open more stores in countries such as Nigeria.
Her rationale for this was that Nigeria is home to more millionaires and billionaires on that continent due to the oil it exports to places like India and China thus brands like Louis Vutton would be smart to open shop.
"To wilfully ignore the business potential of the entire continent of Africa shows poor business judgment.", Collins-Wood writes.Â
Rightly so, but let's not just jump at break neck speed to open retail stores without first exploring the human toll of such a venture. Businesses like Louis Vutton considering Africa should look at ways to integrate themselves within the local community and help lift the lower classes in these places to read and write by launching education programmes in association with NGOs and the respective governments, as an example.
We can't operate the same cycle of willfully ignoring the plight of millions of poor on the continent of Africa as we have done in the past in other areas of our world such as in China where there is no organized labor or in southeast Asian counties where workers face horrible factory conditions.
We have to get it right in Africa.Â

House of Reboot Michael Masterson giving us a lot to talk about!
Pennsylvania's Michael Masterson is giving recycled textiles a reboot. According to house of reboot Every year, the US generates nearly 1 million tons of pre-consumer fabric waste, while the average American throws away 68 pounds of used clothing. Masterson not only used recycled fabric that dates back to the 1960s but he also uses vintage sewing machines that date back to the early 1900s. The machines he uses are fixed and remodeled by himself. Michael Mastersons clothes are made to last. According to a current article Masterson is about to launch a line of denim button ups that come from cloth made in 1962 for Folsom Prison inmates.
Tommy Hilfiger launches African-produced Promise collection
As part of his role as a Millennium Development Goal global leader, fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger is launching a new collection, The Promise Collection.
The line features pieces that have been either been produced in Africa or that use locally-sourced cotton, and Hilfiger has enlisted Katie Holmes to be the ambassador for the line. All profits from the range, which features classic Tommy Hilfiger styles in a bold color palette and African prints, will be invested back into Millennium Promise. Millennium Promise is the charity set up to help achieve the Millennium Development Goals, namely to halve extreme poverty by 2015. The collection will be in stores and online from today.
Conscious Collection By H&M for the Environmentally Aware
Mega fashion company H&M is launching "Conscious Collection" this coming Thursday April 12. The eco-collection will feature designs made of fabrics like organic cotton, hemp, and recycled polyester. This collection features styles for women, men, and kids. It is a follow up to its last sustainable collection the "Garden Collection."
