Bewegungsstudie (Movement Study) by Rudolf Koppitz. Vienna, Austria. 1925.
Ulysses’ Gaze was filmed on location in the Balkans during a time of war, and so deals with the value and meaning of art during wartime – after witnessing the destruction and devastation mankind can cause, where and how do we seek solace? Is it not through art? A beautiful piece of music? A favourite novel? A movie? Does art not distract us? This is why A so desperately wants to find the three reels.
On this journey, A also encounters three women, all played by Maia Morgenstern, who serve as another piece of his missing soul, a figure of passion and desire long gone in his life. They may represent ‘home’, but home can never be what it once was. Maps would be redrawn because of the Bosnian War. Yugoslavia would no longer exist, changing its identity. Angelopoulos captures this theme of identity with the reels, representing the lost identity of a country, and with a powerful image of a broken statue of Lenin, a remnant of the past. Like the statue, both the Balkans and A are damaged beyond repair.
“The Color of Pomegranates” is most simply described as a series of tableaus that recount the life of the 18th-century poet and troubadour turned monk who was known as Sayat Nova (a Persian sobriquet that means “King of Songs”). Born, like Parajanov, in Soviet Georgia to Armenian parents, Sayat Nova was enough of a hero to have the 250th anniversary of his birth commemorated in 1962 with a postage stamp.
In “The Color of Pomegranates,” Sayat Nova’s poems are seen rather than heard. There is some voice-over but little dialogue in an ebb-and-flow soundtrack that alternates wailing folk melodies with choral chanting. The film draws on Sayat Nova’s imagery: angels with flat halos and wooden wings, a pasteboard cloud descending as a vision, the constant repetition of key props including books, silver balls and ornate rugs. Fruits seem to bleed and books to weep. Animals, particularly goats and sheep, are ubiquitous. Impassive actors engage in dancelike gestures while staring straight into the camera.
"The Mirror" movie represents reflections, thoughts of the person named here as the Author. He does not appear personally, only his tired voice sounds. And on the screen, as if in a mirror, are pictures of his past. At first, the memories seem scattered: love for the mother, which the Author does not know how to express, a piercing feeling for the father, dissatisfaction with himself for the undeveloped relationship with his son ... Gradually it becomes clear - this is a person’s account of himself, a difficult judgment of conscience, maybe even a sentence. The film occupies a special place in the work of Andrei Tarkovsky. In it, he captured his aged mother Maria Ivanovna Vishnyakova-Tarkovsky, behind the scenes the voice of his father, the poet Arseny Tarkovsky, reciting his wonderful poems sounds. It's a confession film, a revelation film...

2001: A Space Odyssey by Stanley Kubrick.
What I found stunning about this clip, is the fact that HAL, before he dies, he goes back to his earliest memories, like a human before their death. Also the cold monoton voice, while he is begging for his life, in order to not get shutdown is remarkable and beautiful. The more disks are taken out, the more terrified HAL get's, to the point where Dave comforts HAL by letting him sing his song Daisy.

Illustrated People – Thomas Mailaender.
Illustrated People is the manifestation in book form of a performance by Thomas Mailaender, in which he applied original negatives selected from the Archive of Modern Conflict’s collection to the skin of models and projected a powerful UV lamp over them, revealing a fleeting image on the skin’s surface. Mailaender then photographed each of his models before exposure to daylight caused the images to disappear.
Wim Delvoye - Pig Tattoos.
