Boarding!!
See you soon âïž
You texted Brendon while waiting in line to get on the plane. It had been about a year since you two had seen each other. Both of you had made it a mission to see each other once a year, whether it was Christmas time when you were both back home, or a little fun visit to the otherâs city like you were doing now. With the random Friday off, you were able to schedule a trip over to your bestie. He also happened to have the weekend off, so it was perfect timing. Deciding to fly Thursday after work, you were going to meet him at the hospital since your flight landed less than an hour before his shift ended. It was going to be the reset you needed.Â
You two first met when you were still in the single digits. It was a sunny day at the park, at least thatâs what your mom says (she retells the story every time Brendonâs over for dinner at your childhood home). You had launched yourself down the slide a little too fast and ended up skidding out the bottom, scrapping your knees on the uneven ground. You sat up and started pouting, but no tears had started. A young boy around your age came around, and started pointing and laughing at you. So you got up and started chasing him, obviously. He was going to get it, because how dare he laugh at you while youâre down, literally. Weaving around the pole of the playground, you had your arms out trying to nab him. Eventually, you caught up to him and pushed him, yelling for him to apologize. Both your moms saw the commotion and rushed to figure out what was going on. After you two finished pointing fingers at each other, they made you apologize to each other. After making up, you too hesitantly started playing together, and began to get along. Being friendly, helping each other around the playground, still teasing the other though. Your momsâ had noticed the change in dynamic and decided to trade contacts to set you two up on playdates.
You two ended up going on quite a few playdates. It worked out well for your parents. Whenever one set had commitment, the other set would look after you two. First it was playing with cars and barbies (basically GTA), then it was legos, and eventually turned into kitchen experiments. Once you guys got old enough, you were doing homework together. Well, more distracting each other from homework. And that continued through college. You would call each other while doing busy work, but assignments barely got done. Brendon had shown himself to be much nicer than how you two first met. He was a gentleman at his core, thanks to his mom Beatrice.Â
He helped you get over your first boyfriend, keeping you distracted and reminding you that you didnât need that shit. He was also still a stupid man though⊠he had his moments. LIke that one time in high school when he left you waiting for over an hour to go out and get food. Yeah, the next day when you went over to his, you were scolding him the moment you closed the door. Subsequently he was yelled at immediately after by Beatrice who heard the whole thing from the kitchen. He made it up by being your personal chauffeur for a whole month. He was genuinely remorseful and was being extra nice for a while after that, but still a dick move.
By the time he finished medical school, Beatrice told you he became more rough around the edges. Which you had noticed when he would be very curt the very few times he called during work. Besides that, it just felt like he grew up (finally). Your moms had always said that you were a bit sharper than him in your younger years. He was a bit of a meathead like his brothers for a while, but they all eventually got better.Â
You were really excited to hangout with Brendon. That man loved his relaxation, and thatâs exactly what you needed this weekend. But you also couldnât wait to annoy him to his wits end. It felt like a slice of home.Â
By the time you had boarded and gotten to your seat, Brendon had texted you back.Â

âHey Whitaker, Santos and I are going to get Thai tonight, you wanna come?â Victoria asked, wiggling her eyebrows as she leaned on the counter of the nurses station.Â
âI canât,â Dennis' shoulders tensed slightly, âI already have plans, but let me know the next time you guys go.â he responded with a small smile.Â
Unconvinced, Trinity groaned. âHuckleberry, this is like the third time youâve told us that. Are you ever free?âÂ
âIâm sorry!,â He held his hands up in surrender, âIâve just been busy lately.â He moves to walk away from the conversation, but Santos steps into his path. He abruptly stops, almost crashing into her. She squints at him while he avoids any eye contact with her, looking to Victoria for help.Â
âWhat are you hiding?â Santos continues to glare at him, well more his cheek.Â
Dennis rolls his eyes, âNothing!â he shakes his head before turning around and escaping from her interrogation. Â
â10 bucks heâs part of some kinky cult,â Turning her head to Victoria, who just sighs, grabbing an iPad before walking away.

The last time Dennis checked his phone was about 3 hours ago, right before he put a 60 year old manâs knee back in place. He had been booked and busy since then, running around without a second to stop. But he hadnât stopped thinking about his date later that night.Â
He had met her about 6 months ago on one of his few days off. He decided to treat himself to some coffee that didnât taste like the hogwash from the ER staff room. He rubbed his face as he reached for the door to the coffee shop, still not fully awake. At the same time that he went to grab the handle, another person went for it too, accidentally grabbing his hand.Â
âOh my god, Iâm so sorry,â she pulled back immediately, her face flushing as she made eye contact.Â
âItâs no worries, I got it.â Dennis smiled, fully opening the door to let her in first.Â
âThanks,â she gave back an embarrassed smile before scurrying inside in front of him.Â
When Dennis got in line, he looked up at the menu, deciding if he should try something different or do his usual. He was really debating on getting one of the shopâs weekly specials though. He usually didnât stray from his usual order, but it was his day off, he should treat himself.Â
âHi, can I get an orange creamsicle cappuccino?â he asked, pulling his wallet out from his pocket.Â
âFor sure!â The barista smiled. âBy the way, your drink has been paid for.â Dennis halted his motions.
âHuh?â, he tilted his head, eyebrows furrowing.Â
âThe girl before you paid.â The barista pointed towards the girl who he opened the door for.Â
âOh, uh thanks.â He shoved his wallet back down into his pocket. The barista wished him a good day as he moved out of line and towards the girl. If she felt like she was in the wrong, sheâs wrong about that. He was incredibly tired and didnât see her at the door. If anything he shouldâve paid for her drink for his clumsiness.Â
âThank you,â he said as he got next to her, âyou didnât have to do that.âÂ
âItâs an apology for my awkwardness.â she let out a snort, âand you looked like you needed a pick me up.âÂ
âI need my fill of coffee, even on a day off.â He sighed, looking at the pick up counter.Â
âItâs my day off too! Where do you work?â She asked, turning to him.Â
âPTMC,â he said. Turns out she worked at the same hospital in the Pediatrics department. After they both had drank half of their coffee, they decided to sit down at a table to continue talking. Maybe it was their common workplace or the fact she was so funny, but Dennis was enjoying every minute of it. The conversation flowed easily, and he didnât feel like he had a front on or hide anything about himself. She was genuine and pretty. Really pretty. They ended up talking for over an hour. Talking about family, the transition to Pittsburg, the weird sound the south elevator makes. When they eventually had to go their separate ways, Dennis gathered up the courage to ask for her phone number. Because he had to see her again to pay her back for the coffee.Â
Since then, they have spent every sliver of time off together. So tonight they had planned to get dinner at their favorite Italian place. They planned to go right after their shift ended, not risking going home and getting comfortable.Â
By the time Dennisâ shift was ending, he could almost smell the lasagna he was going to order later that night. He just had handoff and then his dreams would be a reality.Â
Walking to the nurseâs hub, he saw that she was already waiting for him. âHey,â he smiled, slowing to a stop in front of her. âI just have one more thing and then Iâll be good to go.Â
âAlrighty, Iâll be here.â She beamed, setting her bag on the counter. Trinity squinted at Dennis as he walked away.Â
âWho is that?â she bumped her shoulder against Victoriaâs, nodding towards the unfamiliar face. Victoria followed her line of sight before shrugging her shoulders.Â
âProbably a friend?â she suggested with a tilt of head.
âAs if Huckleberry has friends besides us.â Trinity scoffed, making Victoria roll her eyes.Â
âJust ask him.â Trinity rolls her eyes to Victoria in return before walking over to Dennis. He just finished handoff and was ready to leave, but Trinity blocked him like a linebacker before he could make it back to the hub.Â
âWhoâs the chick?â She asked, raising her eyebrows at Dennis. He looked back at his girl with a smile.Â
âMy girlfriend.â He said shortly with a nod, then swiftly moving away from Trinity before the cork blew off and he was hit with it. He was tired of hiding it from everyone. It wasnât like he was doing it on purpose, he just wanted to make sure the relationship was serious before he told anyone. Everyone wanted to poked their noses in other peopleâs business, so he just wanted to be private for a while, which just meant that he was quiet about the whole ordeal. But he was so happy. He got to be himself and found someone who loved that. Someone who supported him and who he supported back. They understood each other to a degree that was kinda unexplainable to him. But they fit together so well together that there was no way he would go back to what life was like before her.Â
Trinity watched Dennis walk away, her mouth slightly agape. Then, she let out a snort sound, making Victoria stare at her with wide eyes. After a moment, she started to cackle, her laugh getting soon louder and she doubled over. Victoria threw a pen at her in an attempt to snap her out of whatever was happening. Trinity just ignored the pen hitting her, picking it up and walking back over to the curly haired girl, still having a giggle fit.Â
âWhat did he say?â Victoria leaned over the top of the counter, itching to get as close to Trinity to hear the news.
âHis girlfriend?â Trinity laughed out, shaking her head as she spoke.Â
âAnd you donât believe him?â The younger girl leaned back with an eyebrow raised.Â
âNo!â letting out an exasperated laugh as she let her hands fall. âHe is just lying to get out of Thai night.â
âWhatevery floats your boat.â Victoria sighed. âWhatever, letâs just get going, Iâm so hungry.â
âI am right.â Trinity pointed a finger at the other before moving to leave together.Â

The next morning, Dennisâ supposed lie had spread across the ED. There was even a bet set up by Ahmed.Â
âYou donât really think he has a girlfriend do you?â Trinity looked up to Perlah from the computer.Â
âIt could explain why heâs been more smiley lately.â Perlah pointed out.Â
âOr it could be because he doesnât have to deal with you two after hoursâ Princes motioned to the two pittlings.Â
âHey! He likes us.â Victoria defended, crossing her arms over herself.Â
âYesterday he was just complaining about how you guys donât take his restaurant suggestions.â Robby interjected, squinting his eyes.Â
âHe has bad taste.â Trinity shook her head. âOne time he took us to this grody BBQ place in the middle of nowhere.â
âDidnât you say it was the best BBQ youâve ever had.â Robby tilted his head.Â
âYesâŠâ Trinity hesitated, âbut the atmosphere was not it, he doesnât get a choice anymore.â Robby just shook his head with a sigh. As the conversation continued, Dennis walked in through the triage door, in step with the same girl that was waiting for him the night before.Â
âIs that her?â Princess asks, nodding over to the entrance. All heads at the station turn.Â
âCould you guys be any more obvious?â Robby laughed, lightly knocking his knuckles against the counter. He shook his head at the antics of his staff before moving to start his day, but still kept an eye towards the lot.Â
* * *
âOh god,â Dennis saw the all beady eyes staring at them as they walked.Â
âYou think theyâre talking about us?â She asked from next to him with a small smile. Dennis just dropped his head with a huff. âWord travels fast.â she laughed.Â
âIt does,â Dennis looked up to meet her eyes, his head still handing low.Â
âLetâs give them something to really talk about then,â Before Dennis could ask what she meant, she had raised to her tippy toes and snaked her hand to lay on his shoulder, pressing a soft kiss to his lips. She started to pull back but Dennis quickly leaned down and kissed her again, his hand on her cheek to halt her from pulling away. It wasnât anything crazy since they were at work, but it was more than enough to get the gossip going. Smiling, they said their goodbyes and went their separate ways.Â
Trinityâs jaw dropped, eyes following Dennis as he walked to the lockers.Â
âYou owe me 20 bucks, Santos!â Victoria exclaimed, pointing at the girl who was still in shock.Â

Dennis was half way through his shift, and all he wanted to do was lay down. Today had been dragging on longer than normal. He honestly would skip dinner so he could crash right after work, but he was too hungry for that.Â
âHuckleberry!â Santos called, âDid you hear? Some of the others are going to Round Up after we get off. We should totally go.â
âWhat is Round Up?â Dennisâ eyebrows furrowed.Â
âItâs some country themed bar downtown. Itâll be so fun, and youâll feel right at home.â She smirked, patting him on the shoulder. Dennis opened his mouth to respond, but was interrupted when Robby called him.Â
Throughout the night, Dennis kept debating about going to the bar, and had decided he wasnât going to go about 4 hours after Santos told him about it . He would likely have a few drinks and feel out of place, so there was no good reason to go if he knew it wasnât going to be that fun. He also didnât want to waste any money that he didnât need to. But his mind changed when he had a particularly draining case at the end of his shift. Plus, Dana said she would buy him a drink. The distraction was needed.
* * *
The bar was loud, but honestly what else was expected. It wasnât super crowded, but there was a good amount of people. He stood near a high top with his coworkers while he finished up his second drink. He was starting to loosen up from the drink and the atmosphere, and was enjoying himself.Â
âYou should have seen the look on Robbyâs face when I told him Whitaker changed scrubs for the third time,â Langdon laughed, looking at Dana.Â
âAt this rate, Iâm going to end up emptying our whole scrub supply by the end of the week â Dennis laughed as the others joined him. It felt nice to let loose, and talk to his coworkers about the silly things instead of serious medical information. Seeing them in this light was refreshing.Â
Dennis tipped back his half full glass, taking the rest of it down. âHey, Iâm going to go grab another, Iâll be right back.â He said as he held up the now empty glass. He weaved his way around the crowd and made it to the edge of the bar. It looked like there was a bit of a wait, so Dennis leaned one of his forearms against the counter, and let his eyes wander to the bottles behind the bar. He didnât spend long looking at the different alcohol on the wall as his thoughts were interrupted by a voice.Â
âHey!â A girl had slid into the empty space next to him. She had previously been trying to get the attention of a bartender, but gave up when she saw how busy they were. âYouâre not dressed up right,â She frowned playfully, pointing to his scrubs.Â
âI just got off of work, didnât have time to change.â He smiled shyly, looking down at his clothes. The girl was pretty cute wearing a cowboy hat with boots to match.Â
âNot very country of you.â She faced him, mirroring his stance. âWell, what type of doctor stuff do you do?â, she said, waving her hand in the air.
âOh no, Iâm not a doctor just yet.â He shook his head profusely. She inched closer to him as she was straining to hear him over the music and crowd. âIâm a 4th year med Student and just started my emergency rotation at the PTMH.âÂ
âOh thatâs cool!â She pulled back. âHow are you liking the city so far?â
âItâs really cool. Iâm still getting used to the city, itâs nothing like home.âÂ
âWhereâs home for you?â she asked, tilting her head.
âSmall town in Nebraska, I lived on a farmâ he looked down at his glass as he twirled it around on the bar. He was getting nervous, he didnât talk about home a lot. He felt like any time he brought it up, Santos just found another way to make fun of him. It didnât bother him a lot, but it was getting annoying. Â
âOh a real country boy!â she laughed. âWell, do you know how to two step cowboy?â She felt that they were nearing a touchy subject, so she wanted to lighten the mood up.Â
âItâs been a while since Iâve danced.â he smiled nervously.
âWell, dust off them dancing boots and letâs see what you got.â Her eyes lit up and a hint of a southern twang came out as she spoke. Taking his arm, she led him to the side of the dance floor. Dennis had been a little reluctant so she didnât want to go right into the middle of the crowd. Besides, she wasnât in the mood to be the center of attention, just the center of his attention.  Â
An upbeat country song was playing in the background when she stopped on the outskirts of the dance floor. Her right hand slid from his forearm down to his hand. âJust follow the music,â she smiled, moving her other hand to lay on his shoulder. âAnd donât step on my toes, these are my pretty boots.â She playfully warned him by pointing at his nose.Â
He let out a laugh at her comment and looked down at her brown leather boots. They looked well kept. Likely her going out boots if she had other pairs, Dennis thought. White embroidery littered all around the shaft, outlining some design he couldnât make in the dim lighting. He was still looking down at their feet as they started to move. The last time he danced was probably when he left for med school. When he graduated from undergrad, his family threw a get together to celebrate. He thought he wasnât the best at dancing then, so right now, he felt as stiff as his drink.Â
âYouâre getting it,â she cheered. They had had a few missteps, but were able to find a good groove after a minute. While he felt out of practice, she thought he was better than most of the guys who came to the bar. It seemed like his muscle memory was starting to kick in. Dennis then finally looked up and settled his eyes on hers.Â
âItâs coming back to me,â He gave a small smile. He took his hand off her back and started to spin her with the hand that was still in hers. A genuine laugh came out of her from the unexpected move. Â
* * *
It wouldâve been a miracle if Dennis didnât catch the eye of the friends that he earlier abandoned, but god was not willing to grant that one tonight.Â
âWhereâs Huckleberry?â Santos asked, looking to the bar to see a sliver of the mousy boy.Â
âHeâs over there, twirling that girl around.â Dana tipped her drink in the direction of the pair, âLooks like you owe me five Langdon.â, smirking to the man on her left. All heads turned to the dance floor to see the event.Â
âDidnât know he had it in him,â Langdonâs mouth parted in surprise.Â
âHe doesnât look half bad at dancing,â Javadi mused before taking a sip from her glass of water.Â
Dennis finished orbiting her around the floor, and they laid their eyes back on each other.
âAre you sure you havenât danced recently?â She jested. Her words and smile charming him.
âIt helps that I have a pretty partner,â Dennis froze, âI mean- a pretty good partner,â He looked a bit alarmed. He didnât mean to say that but Freudian slip got the best of him. Â She giggled at his misstep, taking the compliment both ways.Â
âWell having a handsome leader to follow certainly doesnât hurt.â She replied. The music started to shift to a slower song and the couples around them started to follow suit. âDo you mind if we keep dancing?â
âNo, I uh- Iâd love to.â He answered. He moved both of his hands to rest around her waist. âIs this alright?â
âGood to me.â She hummed. Moving her hands to link behind his neck, she settled in the swaying movement he started. âNow tell me, whatâs your name, partner?â, seating at his wording earlier.Â
âDennis, and yours?â Their faces were close, not close enough to touch, but not far enough for him to miss the spots on her face. She drawled out her name, not taking her eyes off him. It mightâve been the drinks in her system, but he felt like more than just a dance at a local bar. She wanted to talk to him more. Maybe they could talk over some drinks that they hadnât gotten to earlier. Or maybe they could set something up for a later date, she would like that.Â
In the corner of Dennisâ eye he saw Dana trying to get his attention. She didnât want to disturb him but they were leaving and he was said he needed a ride from someone. She had her thumb out pointing towards the exit, trying to mouth some words to him. Dennis got the message, and sighed, turning his attention back in front of him.Â
âThis has been such a good time,â Dennis started, âbut Iâve got to get going now.â He frowned.
âAh, no worries,â she shrugged, and took her hands off of him, shoving them in her pockets. She was a bit disappointed that their night was ending but understood nevertheless. âCould I get your number?â She waited a beat before asking but the words came out a bit faster than she meant.Â
âOh yeah sure!â Dennis fumbled to get his phone out. She put her number in his phone, and then sent a message to herself saying Dance Partner from Round Up with cowboy hat emoji. After returning the phone to him, she smiled and squeezed his bicep, âI had fun, text me.â She then walked off, hoping that it wouldnât be the last time she saw him.
With his phone still on in hand, Dennis was softly smiling as he watched her walk away.Â
âGood time kiddo?â Dana asked as she clapped his shoulder.Â
âAmazing.â He let out, still looking in the direction that his partner left.Â
Dana laughed, âAlright letâs get you home, Mr. Whipped.â
As someone who goes out to actually dance at socials, not just the club (i donât dance two step but still) this touched my heart in such a personal way ugh amazing five stars

âGood to me.â She hummed.
Whipped.â
