Itβd been a week of relentless rain, as if the world was spilling its tears for the thousands of deaths worldwide. Itβd only been around a month of this mess. People panicked so much they turned quick, civilization fell right along with them.
The second you saw the news and saw the catastrophe for yourself, you threw your life in a bag and drove off to where you thought itβd be isolated this time of year. Though you were wrong and eventually evaded your spot. Driving your old truck until you could no longer. Eventually, you found yourself in a lakeside cabin.
Youβd taken refugee in that cabin for a week and a half, helping yourself to its contents. You managed to have a couple of hot meals, due to spending a couple of your days fishing. You were wary about how often and long you lit a fire, because in reality you didnβt really clear out much of the forest around you. Though now because of the rain, any hopes of a fire were extinguished.
The rain was harsh, plopping down obnoxiously loud on the roof. The amount of it was worrying, since there was a definite chance the lake could flood for a couple days. And with how close to the water you resided, it was a true concern.
Now, you were sat on the front porch on the cabin you now called your own. A pistol remained strapped to your thigh for protection, one you managed to snag during the beginning of your βexpeditionβ for safety.
Your eyes watched over the view in front of you, mapping out the trees and looking for any potential uninvited visitors.
You had felt your anxiety grow the past couple of days, as if you could feel eyes on you every now and then. It was off-putting, because you made sure to survey the land around you frequently. Fortifying it here and there, doing the best you could with the minimal equipment you possessed.
The only sounds that filled your ears was the relentless downpour, and the sound of the wood creaking underneath your bouncing leg.
Soon, a new noise fills your ears, the sound of scuffling bushes and leaves. This sends you into high alert, your feet firmly planted on the wooden floor beneath you as you stand from your chair.
Your hand cautiously reaches for your weapon, and you make your way to investigate. Bracing against the rain, you raise a hand over your eyes. Twigs snap underneath your feet as you carefully maneuver over the mass of wet leaves.
You approach the general source of the sound, and eventually your eyes catch sight of movement. Before you know it, a small figure emerges from the leaves, scurrying past you and underneath the porch you previously abandoned.
The words softly escape you while you turn to follow the figure you assume is an animal. The closer you get, you realize itβs a cat. It retreats into the darkness once you approach. You sigh at its reluctance to come out, deciding to leave it be.

So now youβve found yourself soaking wet and dripping everywhere, going through your food supplies. Eventually you manage to scrounge up something edible, and settle it inside of a small bowl.
Once you deemed it as something you were willing to spare, you brought it outside and settled it on the porch. The cat was nowhere in sight, but you decided once you stayed inside, itβd eat it.
You then stood to watch the sun set. You used to not care much for sunsets, they were pretty and all, but they didnβt have much meaning for you prior. But after being so deep in nature, you admired the orange tinted overlay. The way the waves sparkled under the sun, and how the moon rose to give everything a blanket of cool tones.
After a couple moments of peace, you retreat inside. After securing your front door and doing your rounds to make sure you were as safe as possible, you changed your clothes to dry ones, and made your way to bed.
You relaxed on the mattress, the comfort of laying down soothing some of your dull aches. The consistent rain causing you to fall asleep much faster than you anticipated.

You were met with a searing sense of anxiety as soon as you woke up. Despite this, you did your morning rituals. Even coincidentally found a portable stove stuffed in a cabinet, which you used to make some pretty shit coffee. You drank it regardless, carrying it with you while you prepared for the day.
You could hear that the rain let up overnight, by now it was only sprinkling if anything. You abandoned your mug on the coffee table when you crouched down the pull on your shoes. While slipping on a jacket, you opened the door to step outside.
To your slight surprise, the bowl you left for the cat was empty. You looked around for it almost immediately, and found it sitting on the far end of the porch, settled on the railing.
It stood up straight once you approached it, you could see it was being wary of what you might do.
You showed a soft smile as you reached a hand out for it to sniff. After a couple moments of uncertainty, it nudged your hand with itβs head.
βWell. arenβt you sweet.β
You let yourself relax for the moment, petting the cat lovingly. It was willingly being pet, up until it jumped and ran away.
You muttered to yourself, watching it scurry into the bushes. And just as you went to turn around and go back inside, you were met with a gruff unfamiliar voice.
βMorninβ neighbor.β
You swore your heart dropped to your ass, though you turned around anyway. Your hand instinctively moving to take a hold of your sidearm. But once you were facing the source of the sound, you noticed you were in fact outnumbered. And definitely not on the upper hand.
βDrop your weapon on the ground. We just want to talk.β
Ordered one of the four men stood surrounding your porchβs entrance. They all had weapons trained on you, and your first assumption was that they were military issued. They were decorated in things that just screamed military, from the vests to the way they stood.
You shifted your weight to one leg, you were certainly strong, but definitely not strong enough to take on 4 men your size. With a small huff of disbelief, you carefully removed your pistol from its holster. Throwing it in front of the one closest to you, who was standing at the bottom of the steps. Which resulted in a soft thud from it hitting ground so hard.
βYou donβt sound like youβre from here. At all.β
The one who was speaking to you displayed a small smirk, before motioning for the man closest to you to retrieve your weapon and for the rest to lower their own weapons.
βWe donβt mean to come up on ya so harshly, but we want to form an alliance.β
βYβall donβt seem like you really need an alliance. Especially out here.β
You quipped, you let your hands remain visible to the four, watching the one with the mohawk pocket the gun you surrendered.
βWeβve been watching you ever since your arrival, and you donβt seem like youβd be a liability. Weβre just givinβ ya the chance to have a few less enemies.β
He was ignoring half of what you were saying, which was starting to irritate you. You looked over the group, taking in their contrasting appearances.
βWhy donβt we sit? Thereβs a picnic table out back.β

Now you were all settled, guns no longer drawn. You now knew their names and them yours. Kyle was sat next to you, on the far edge of the bench facing you. Johnny and John were across from you, with John in front of you. While Simon stood between Johnny and Kyle at the end of the table to your left.
The tension radiating off the five of you, though with the weapons put away, you felt a bit better about the situation.
βWe wanted to greet you before you greeted us. Didnβt want any unnecessary bloodshed.β
You could tell John had some authority over the rest, as he was doing most of the talking. The others occasionally nodding along.
You looked between them for a couple of moments, trying to decide how you wanted to go about this. This seemed odd to you, because you felt as though you were being recruited. But it was obvious they were influencing the fact that they had the high ground.
βHow did you plan to go about this, alliance?β
βJust want to be friendly neighbors. You seem to have some useful skills, we have useful equipment. If all goes well, we could all work together to fortify this area, defend it. And obviously provide resources.β
Kyle was the one to speak this time, his voice was softer in a sense, but he was just as straightforward as the other man.
You nodded along with his words, he wasnβt wrong, it was be beneficial and you could work a system. Better than being the odd one out when being in such a close proximity.
βHave yβall seen how it is out there? Left anytime recently?β
βMmh. Itβs a hellβofa lot worse than it was. Military hereβs workinβ to gather survivors and all, theyβre resilient. Couldnβt say the same for us. We lost all oβ our contacts.β
Johnny explained to you, you took notice of the thickness of his accent. In the back of your mind you felt like you were unlocking new aspects of their characters.
βSo yβall arenβt from here?β
John nodded his head, sitting up straight and crossing his arms over his chest.
βBack on the alliance. What doβya say?β
You pondered the situation for a few moments, you truly felt like you were going into this blindly. These men were surely far older than you, with obvious military experience under their belt. And since it felt you didnβt have much of a choice, you agreed.
βYeah, alright. As long as thereβs no plans to kill me off.β
The Scottish man let out a slight snicker, a smile residing on his face.
John held put a hand for you to shake, and you took it. You could sense the tension die down, even a little relief.
βYou know this place well?β
A new voice, which belonged to Simon. You noticed a shift in his stance as he brought his hands up to rest on his vest straps.
βWell enough. I know where a map is, thatβll lead us back to the nearest towns. My hometown isnβt far from here.β
You received a pleased nod from the man, and another from John. You could tell they were going to be using your knowledge often.
βWeβre just up the hill. Weβll come back in a day or two, we need to survey the area, make sure there isnβt any infected, or people.β
He explained his plan as he made his way to stand, the others eventually following in suit.
βAlright. If any of you eat fish, Iβm sure I could get some by afternoon. I have spices and all, itβs not half-bad.β
Johnnyβs expression seemed pleased at the offer, and his hands fell to settle inside his jeans pockets. Kyle also look intrigued while looking at the others for their reaction.
ββSuppose weβll come back down then, βleast I will. Iβm a pretty good fisherman if youβve got rods to spare.β
Johnny spoke with a grin on his face.
βPlenty. Iβll get right on it in an hour or two.β
You smiled and John nodded, you said your goodbyes and so did they. You retreated to your cabin and they starter their small journey back to theirs.
You hoped it wouldnβt rain again, and you sure as hell hoped they werenβt fucking with you.
