Every year after the full moons in late October and November, Australia’s Great Barrier Reef begins its annual spawning — first the coral species inshore, where waters are warmer, then the offshore corals, the main event. Last year, this natural spectacle coincided with the woolly propagation of two new colonies of the Crochet Coral Reef, a long-running craft-science collaborative artwork now inhabiting the Schlossmuseum in Linz, Austria, and the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh. To date, nearly 25,000 crocheters (“reefers”) have created a worldwide archipelago of more than 50 reefs — both a paean to and a plea for these ecosystems, rainforests of the sea, which are threatened by climate change. The project also explores mathematical themes, since many living reef organisms biologically approximate the quirky curvature of hyperbolic geometry.

Design as Protest exists to hold the architecture and design professions accountable in using our collective power to reverse the racial violence and social injustices that architecture, design, and urban planning practices have inflicted upon Black people and communities.
Based on a shared belief that “resÂiÂdents know what’s needÂed to conÂtribute to a safe and thrivÂing livÂing enviÂronÂment and should have a voice in shapÂing its changes,” the group idenÂtiÂfied sevÂerÂal goals to guide their work: proÂvide trainÂing and assisÂtance to build resÂiÂdents’ abilÂiÂty to colÂlect and interÂpret data that can ultiÂmateÂly be used to inform comÂmuÂniÂty change efforts; conÂduct interÂviews, surÂveys and othÂer activÂiÂties (led by resÂiÂdents, in partÂnerÂship with a research firm) to colÂlect reliÂable data that answer research quesÂtions idenÂtiÂfied throughÂout the project; share demoÂgraphÂic charÂacÂterÂisÂtics of who lives in the area, what serÂvices and resources exist and how resÂiÂdents are using them, and what else comÂmuÂniÂty memÂbers would like to see; build the capacÂiÂty and relaÂtionÂships of project team memÂbers, resÂiÂdents and stakeÂholdÂers through team buildÂing, proÂfesÂsionÂal develÂopÂment and engageÂment with varÂiÂous stakeÂholdÂers; and proÂvide resources and diverse opporÂtuÂniÂties to spur new venÂtures and businesses.

The Minimum Viable Action is the shortest, simplest version of the target action that users absolutely must take to so that you can test whether your product idea (and its assumed impact on behavior) works. It builds on the lean startup concept of the Minimum Viable Product: the smallest set of features that allows the product to be deployed and tested in the field. You can think about the Minimum Viable Action (MVA) like this. You’ve mapped out what you’d like users to do. Excellent. Along the way, you’ve made some core assumptions about how the user will feel, react to, and interact with the product. The problem is: no one really knows how people will respond, and the more intractable the behavior, the less certainty we have that a product will be able to change it. As I mentioned at the beginning of the book, there aren’t any behavioral magic wands, and we should expect to be wrong about some things. For that reason, I strongly believe in testing ideas out in the field. And, in testing as early as possible to adapt and learn as you go along.[77]

Warm Data is a specific kind of information about the way parts of a complex system, such as members of a family, organisms in the oceans, institutions in society, or departments of organization come together to give vitality to that system. By contrast, other data will describe only the parts, while Warm Data describes their interplay in context. Warm Data illustrates vital relationships between many parts of a system. For example, to understand a family, one must understand not only the family members, but also the relationships between them, that is, the warm data. In such cases, warm data is used to better understand and improve responses to issues that are located in the relational dynamics. Examples include understanding the systemic risks in health, ecology, economic systems, education systems and many more. The typical approach to issues decontextualizes specific information, which in turn can generate mistakes. On the other hand, warm data promotes coherent understanding of living systems.

The process for attaining social justice we view as necessarily inclusive, respectful of human diversity and affirming of the capacity of all people to join with others to create change for our collective well-being. Social justice requires engaging everyone in democratic and collaborative processes grounded on the premise that there is enough to meet the needs of all.Â
