Hi Nort! I’ve always wanted to ask this question about a topic in your writing, and I wanted to hear your more in depth thoughts on it. Hopefully it won’t go too far into spoiler territory, but of course, only anything you’re comfortable sharing.
I’m always interested in how people write family because it’s such a complex and emotional element.
I’ve noticed in your writing, especially in MOTM, there’s a strong presence of family, specifically siblings. Bendy & Boris, Cuphead & Mugman, Mickey & Oswald (I suspect... maybe Willie as well), they’re all family/siblings (blood or otherwise, doesn’t matter. They consider themselves as such, so that’s what they are).
The reason I ask is because I know the idea of “family” can mean very different things for every writer.
For some, family is the end all be all. Family is family till the end, no matter what. I think the best example I can think of is Jinx and Vi in Arcane. They’ve hurt each other, they’ve caused each other immense suffering on both ends, and by all means it would be understandable, maybe even reasonable, if someone thought the best decision for both of them would be to never interact again, and yet they keep choosing each other, even in alternate timelines. They’re sisters and they would never fully throw that bond away.
The conversation that sums it up pretty simply is:
Jinx: “Are we still sisters?”
Vi: “Nothing is ever going to change that.”
So I guess my question is: what does family, especially sibling relationships, mean to you as a writer?
Do you see family as something unconditional? Or do you think there are limits where a familial relationship can become too damaging, beyond saving, even between siblings?
And when you write character dynamics like Bendy & Boris, Cuphead & Mugman, or Mickey & Oswald, are you exploring an idea of “family” that’s personal to you, or is it more about the kind of emotional storytelling you’re drawn to?
This is an EXCELLENT question thank you so much for asking this
Family is a BIG factor in literally every single story that Fly and I create together.
Fly and I's sibling relationship of course plays a big role into how we write, as it's an important part of our (or atleast my own) life.
It's taken a lot of stormy waters to get our sibling relationship to where it is now, and I won't lie and say that I made it easy.
Fly is very strong and they are the best sibling a guy like me could ask for.
Sibling relationships in media are a hit or miss situation, which is unfortunately a big factor into why I don't watch a lot of anime 💀 (YES I KNOW NOT ALL ANIMES, SOME ARE GREAT BUT YOU CAN'T DENY.... THE AMOUNT... OF TIMES. MOVING ON)
Then you get cartoons like Gravity Falls who portray a lot of nuance in the ups and downs of a sibling relationship, and how many sides to one story there can be.
QFTIM's portrayal of sibling relationships was, well what's a light way to say it; Atrocious. You can tell that the author was mainly inspired by shitty anime tropes and characterizations.
But there was a reoccurring theme that followed each of the pairs; "The struggling younger sibling doing their best to keep their struggling older sibling afloat"
And that stuck with me. It hit really hard because what a tragic story to tell. It's as intriguing as it is sad, and unfortunately rings very true with so many families.
I'd rather not spill my own guts out here to a bunch of internet strangers but growing up a lot of life wasn't super kind to me. l understand what the older sibling goes through but I sympathize with how much the younger sibling has to take up.
In QFTIM, a lot of the sibling conversations unfortunately boiled down to gaslighting and guilt-tripping the other into doing what they wanted, whether it was Q!Bendy constantly holding his death over young Q!boris, Q!Cuphead guilting Q!mugman into not being friends with the b-bros, Q!Mickey guilting Q!Oswald into speaking (very indirect but its there)
I'm not saying it can't happen but i'm saying that Quest portrayed those things as either "Good" things or "Rational" things to say to the other. Which was bullshit.
In a lot of Au's, the cup-bros specifically have a tumultuous relationship, and it seems like usually Mugman grows tired and irritated at Cuphead and eventually snaps or leaves him altogether. Which is fair for those stories tbh i don't blame mugman LMAO
In myth, however, something brought them back together. All I can say is that their love for each other never faded, even when they were apart.
Family is never a end-all thing, Family is a word that represents love and connection. Something that ties you to a group of people by your own hands.
I think of the word "Family" like a string with a knot, and the knot is always in your hand. That string that binds you to your family is something that can either be tightened, or pulled loose, but no matter what the string is always in your hand
"The Blood of the Covenant is Thicker than the Water of the Womb"
Family comes from you, and the people who are willing to connect and love you, not just the people you were born with. It's up to you to tie that string tighter, or pull it apart.
That's family, to me atleast
