As substance abusers’ veins are damaged and become unusable, skin popping is more common, as well as use of veins of the upper arms, neck, legs, and groin. This extremely well preserved mummy is that of a man who lived during the Ptolemaic Period. According to the customs of the time, the body of the deceased was carefully wrapped in strips of linen; the design formed by these strips, notably around the face, was often extremely sophisticated. The mummy is covered with a cartonnage consisting of several elements: a mask covering the head, a wide collar over the chest, an apron across the legs, and finally, a casing over the feet. It is located at The Louvre.

They killed a total of 141 people out of which 132 were students ranging between 8-years-old to 18-years-old. All of the terrorists were shot and killed when special forces stormed the school. This was the deadliest terrorist attack to ever take place in Pakistan.

Young woman with elephantiasis, 1877 - At a time when infant mortality and childhood infectious diseases were far more common than today, this girl contracted diphtheria and scarlet fever at age 5. By age 17 she had developed elephantiasis documented here. The childhood sickness had infected her body’s lymphatic system and closed the lymph vessels at the top of her legs, causing the fats usually transported by that system to stay put, swell, and harden. Five days after this photograph was taken, the girl died of complications from the infection at New York’s Bellevue Hospital

William Spreckley, a soldier who fought in WW1 and was badly wounded, deforming his face. Through the surgeon Gilles he was given a new face, and even went on to fight in WW2.

Artist Paddy Hartley has made a whole series of uniforms telling the story of wounded WW1 soldiers who got their face reconstructed. The uniforms contains lots of personal and hospital photographs, notes from the surgeon etc. They are surprisingly powerful.

A mother’s gift to anatomy - The woman in labor has no name. She must have had one at some point, but as bad luck would have it, she was hit and killed by a carriage as she walked in front of the San Carlos Royal College of Surgery, back in 18th-century Madrid.

Nobody claimed the body, whose round belly contained a child about to be born. It was quite a windfall for the surgeons in training at the school, which was always short of corpses on which to learn anatomy.

The body handlers proceeded according to customs of the era: mud was applied and a mold created; this mold was filled with wax, and today it remains the most striking sculpture of those at the Complutense University School of Medicine. She is a Pietá lying back against a chair with her belly sliced open like a pomegranate and the fetus exposed, its little head pointing down. She is a life-like, life-size wax statue.
