On August Macke
August Macke b. 1887-d.1914 German Expressionist, specifically leading member of the group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) Influenced from a young age by Japanese prints and Arnold Bocklin Importance on scene, environmental mood, ambiance, shape and volume
In his more naturalistic pieces such as "The artist's wife in blue hat" c 1909 and "Blue Girl Reading" c 1914 gentle articulation of tone in the flesh informs volumes while in later works --"Blue Girl Reading" could perhaps be seen as a transition--volumes are described in broad gradients, akin to a more sculptural tradition, though in landscapes such as "Vegetable fields" c 1911 and "Staudacher's house at the Tegernsee" c 1910 more minute detail in shading as a product of light rather than form is evident.
His light is spring. "Read house in the park" 1914 is especially expert in expressing the evening light. Far left face in "Promenade" c 1913 is sumptuous "Kairouan (III)" c 1914 is an especially interesting departure? Or perhaps resolve?

I had just a terrible terrible dream today...
I was down in New Orleans and it was around dusk I think. I peeled off the group of people I had traveled there with, which seems to be a lot easier to do in my dreams than in real life. I walked into a store which had many harpsichords in it, cute little ones, it was really beautiful. I was chewing gum, but it was tar-like; you know! like when you get to the very very last bit of some Double Bubble and it just feels like you’re chewing sticky clay.
The owner greeted me and I noticed someone of great resemblance to her but older, she was partly behind the counter and a piano, she was hooked up to some manner of life-support perhaps. The woman had a sort of horror movie, old lady hysteria which entranced her when I passed, but that seemed normal for the retailer as she was calmed down.
There was a group of girls in the store aswell, a few were being quite rambunctious for being in a harpsichord store while another seemed upset. When I sat in front of this absurdly small keyboard (it should be said that I can’t play any sort of key instrument, I don't know why I dreamt this store), carved out of jade in a Victorian fashion, perhaps two or three octaves on it (ridiculous), the upset girl said hi and whispered into my ear. She was just asking if I could find her any pot. I let her know I had some back at the place I was staying and whenever her and her friends wanted to leave I could walk with them and give it to them. She was appreciative but it was quite obvious they had no intentions of hanging around me. My gum was very hard.
I felt the gum start to stick to my teeth and I had the most unsettling looseness in my mouth. When I pulled my jaw open to keep chewing one of my teeth came loose and I spit it into my hand with a little blood but I couldn’t get the gum out. Another came out as I struggled to organize my mouth and the vacating teeth were coming from further and further back. Eventually I had a front bottom tooth, a couple of canines and two molars in my hand. Pulling out a molars was the most unsettling by far and I started to become hysterical. I ran to a tiny restroom. It was an extremely small room in plan though seemed to reach upward forever, like a cavern extending into the depths of a mountain. I felt the need to clean the teeth in my hysteria, shaky hands, crying a bit. Finally, pulling on the gum I removed a wisdom tooth which I felt rattling in the back of my skull. I broke down in a crashing wave of tears and the girl burst into the restroom; seeing me she became kind and caring and though shocked, assured me everything was going to be fine. I just needed to hold on to my teeth, and after we got the pot we could take care of my mouth.
I have teeth dreams a lot.
