starting off real formal like Hi, how are you? once their schools set them up as email-pals but once they get to know each other they talk less formally until they’re basically communicating in a slang that is more inside jokes than actual abbreviations 

james pissing lily off at the beginning because he’s just so goddamn annoying and asks the most ridiculous questions and uses too many emoticons and has too many exclamation marks at the end of every single sentence!!!!!!!!!!! and you can bet he changes the font 6 times in an email and uses different font colors and highlight colors and lily gets a headache just from reading them.

them going through their Random XD ^_^ phases and lowkey having an unspoken competition to never repeat a smiley face: once the normal ones, XD and 8D and ^-^ and :3 are used up, they go to the more unique ones, (%_^_%) until they have to ask each other… right what the fuck kinda emotion were you trynna express in that

them talking on msn messenger and james nudging lily constantly and she always threatens to log off but she never does

lily changing her signature to FUCK YOU JAMES when he sends her eighteen memes in a row and writing an email to her teachers without realizing she still had the signature on.

one day her friend remus logs onto her computer and the emails are open and they’ve been talking for a few years now and lily comes back to see him reading through them all and “what the fuck remus those were private!” “haha… i bet they are ;)))” “what’s that supposed to mean?” and remus just sighs and goes, “it’s obvious that you’re both madly in love!”

sirius and peter knew about lily from the very start. they also knew james was Head over Heels from the beginning too. (”james if you ruffle your hair while staring at that screen one more time i s2g” “you know she literally can’t? see you?? you’re emailing??” “shut up pete”)

lily suddenly panicking bc does she like the idiot she’s been emailing for like three years? of course not.

lily’s mentioned remus a few times, and sirius and peter break onto james’ computer and start talking to remus. they co conspire and eventually write up a fake chain mail that goes SEND TO YOUR CRUSH <3 AND YOU WILL FIND TRUE LOVE <3 IGNORE TO STAY A SPINSTER </3

and remus sends it to james from lily’s account and sirius and peter send it to lily from james’ account
