Yasmeen Khan: Rehearsed readings offer writers the space to experiment and explore, but attracting an audience can be difficult. What's the solution?
Twists/Spoilers - Do they matter? (By Si)
*Warning Doesn't Contain Spoilers*Â
The Sixth Sense, Lost, Life On Mars, Titanic - What do they all have in common; they have twists, and shock endings that come as a surprise to the viewer - surprises one needs to enjoy for themselves, rather than be told in advance - or so is my understanding.Â
No call me a Facetious Franklin, but doesn't MOST drama require enough of a plot to warrant an ending one can't envisage at the beginning; I guess it's a pleasure thing, a dramatic orgasm, an punchline to a joke or something like that. But the fact that I know that at the end of Psycho, it turns out aliens abducted the Mother and did weird hybrid experiments on her that made her a crazed killer doesn't spoil my rewatching of said drama; and the second time round all those little in-jokes for the initiated 'Oh yes Mother's been feeling a little green lately', is perhaps even more pleasurable than the shock of finding out she's half martian in the first place.
It's a modern thing I know; during the renaissance they weren't tweeting HASHTAG: MONA LISA MYSTERIOUS SMILE or during the 18th Century, a bootleg Mozart symphony didn't get leaked, go viral and bit torrented by every Tom, Dick and Harry; it's a mindless need for consumerism.
In Soaps it was about WANTING to know what happened next which made us tune in, now we already know that character that hasn't even been conceived in Eastender's will grow up to become a mass murderer, gambling addict and burn down the Queen Vic (Again), and was also Little Mo's Mother's AUNT... So will we be tuning in for the next 30 odd years to see if this pans out the way JUST NOW magazine has told us?Â
All this 'Spoiler' malarky has now been reverse-engineered... it used to be about trying to find out who killed Mrs Fish before it was broadcast, and spoiling it for Joe Public (and his bulimic sister Jane), but a little bit of me wonders whether the studio system and corporate goblin sharks; purposefully act as if the third act to any hokem piece of crap is *SPOILERIFIC*, and in turn getting our dander up.Â
The lucky thing about anonymity in producing a piece of work or theatre now is that by not having mass media bent around your product is that a surprise or twist ending will naturally occur for your audience; it's not really a 'surprise ending' it's just the ending, which may be clever or unexpected, but it's naturally so because some blogger hasn't transcribed every flipping molecule that moved in those last 15 nanoseconds - perhaps our show has that, perhaps it does, perhaps it doesn't I wouldn't want to say ;)Â
You feel that in the end we'll just end up watching very short clips on youtube that give us that instant gratification because everything has been explained, sucked out and made uniformly pazzazzy - oh wait... bollocks!Â
People trying to get round the fact that the Simon Jay in #isheabitsimonjay is a fictional character and not me :)
Brilliant sneak peak at the artwork for IS HE A BIT SIMON JAY - 2014 UK TOUR - designed by Christopher Rogers, more to come soon.Â

Mr fez from last nights performance of is he - he is the king of the comic book people
THANK YOU!
It’s all over now, and it’s been a corker of a festival this year. We’ve had an amazing number of shows and venues involved, great ticket sales and lots of reviews. We’ve also had a lot of attention from Mayors the Mayor of London turned up on his bike for a show and the Mayor of Camden picked out his highlights for the Camden New Journal.
