The Enthusiast, The Sceptic, Julia, The Eldest and The Youngest from World Bog Snorkelling Championships.

Waen Rhydd Bog, Llanwrtyd Wells, Powys, Wales.

In 1976 Gordon Green the pub landlord, and a few regulars devised bog snorkelling over a pint in The Neuadd Arms, Llanwrtyd Wells, as a means to bring tourism back to Britain’s smallest town.

Competitors complete two lengths of a water filled trench cut through a peat bog, in the shortest time possible. They must wear snorkels and flippers, conventional swimming strokes are forbidden.

The charity event is always a media frenzy.

The best time when I visited was 1 minute 45 seconds.

Four and a half years ago I was commissioned by Hogarth Worldwide via Global Assignment at Getty Images to photograph Southend pier for Santander. 

Pam who arranged for me to go out there had a very clear idea what my lunch should be, “you can’t go to the seaside and not have fish and chips.” As I parked up on a back street on my way to the chippy and then by a park I thought how pleasant it all seemed, and not at all what I expected. 

So a year ago we moved to nearby Westcliff-on-Sea. 

By way of closing the circle, a few days ago I popped into Santander and this is what I saw.
