In 2010 I received the British Election Artist commission from the UK Parliament where a visual artist has access to politicians during the official 25 days of electioneering up to Polling Day. Over the next few days I'm going to post up some of the resulting photographs from that commission. Going through my archives this week I came across one of my first spreads in the @thestmagazine from 1999. #DesertBlast was a gathering of pyro-enthusiasts (sic: maniacs) in the Nevada Desert who, in their own words, like "blowing shit up"! It was quite an extraordinary story and I can't thank @aidanj56 enough for giving a punt on this 25-year-old green photographer. Dwelling 2017, currently on show at the Saatchi Gallery, London. C-type lambda prints Each 76.2 x 60.1 cm Photographing both found and artist-made structures, Dwelling explores the basic human desire for shelter. They link us with something much older and bigger than us; part of our collective imagination. This series is a typology of dens in Hitch Wood, Hitchin. Most of the dens were already in existence, some I created. On one level they are one of the most basic forms of architecture and sign of human survival, on the other they are beautiful sculptural forms of self-expression.
