“Don’t think so little of myself, I’ll always find time to meet you, Simmons.” He replied, a smile resting on his lips. He was glad that she had moved to Astoria, it was nice having Alice ever since those years in Australia where he really could use a friend. “Maya’s great actually, I feel like everytime I blink, she’s taller, smarter, older. And I know that’s usually how it goes, but it’s through her that I see how time flies,” and sometimes he wanted to stop time from doing so. “And I’ve tried to get his new apps they use, some Maya were able to teach me but some others I’m horrible at. Which one did she send you?” He questioned, amused by their conversation.
His hands brushing agaisnt his face, before he rested his back against the chair; taking a sip from his wine, he scoffed. “You don’t have to… Worry about me. I’m doing great, I promise. And I’ve been eating and resting as much as I can. I’m okay. And what about you? How’ve you been?”
“i think the world of you, mr. mayor. i really am grateful you can carve out time for me. i read something recently that said we shouldn’t be afraid to let our friends know how we feel about them. i’m trying it out. is it weird?” alice pulls her face in a playful grimace. a chuckle follows as she studies his face. she knows he’ll put everyone else in front himself. he may say he’s fine, but the truth could be buried in his words and demeanor. with a sigh, she pulls out her phone and pulls up her conversation with maya. “james, i swear to whatever higher power there is, i’m finally feeling my age. i feel like i’ve done okay with the changes in technology. in fact, i welcome anything that makes my life easier. but emojis are hieroglyphics to me. she sent me the crying laughing face with the peach emoji? then there was this really sad face with big eyes?”
she picks up her wine and sips from it. the taste is pleasant enough. “are you sure you’re okay? of course i’m going to worry about you. come on. it’s what friends do.” lifting a hand, alice makes a vague gesture. “work is great. i feel like we’re making some major headway. or... i hope we are. i try to keep the hope alive. me... who cares?”

— It wasn’t like Leon hated his job. Like he’d told Laurel, it was means to an end. A way for him to keep his sanity in check while also putting food at the table, for both himself and his cats, who, by the way, had become spoiled little brats. But for the past month or so, coming to Java had become more of an obligation other than something didn’t mind. His only distractions were some of his favorites stopping by, like Alice, Ana, MJ and even Laurel… so whenever he did get the chance to interact with them, it felt like a good day to him. Alice had known him prior to his accident, and both MJ and her had been the ones to help him out whenever he blacked out or had trouble remembering things, which, of course, he’d be forever grateful for and indebted with.
His smile brightened when she caught his attention, doing a little bow to her. Alice had picked the perfect time to stop by… at this time of the day, there were little to no movement, plus, it was close to Leon’s clock out time, so, again… perfect. “Anything for you, m’lady.” He teased, before leaning over the counter, his hand covering the other. At her question, a smirk crept into his lips and Leon scrunched his face for a second, which was a little tick he had developed to move his glasses back into place (except he hardly ever were glasses at work). “Eh–I guess I can break barista-customer confidentiality privileges with you.” He shrugged, leaning even forward so he could keep his voice level low. “So… basically, he’s cheating on her with his best friend. A guy.”
the bow makes her laugh. she wonders how she survived in a world before leon. he knows exactly when she needs to get out of her head. it’s the little things she decides. they make the difference in a friendship. alice does her best not to glance at the couple as she explains. she shifts a little closer as her own voice drops. “shut up.” she licks her lips before giving in and glancing over at them. she can see the anger laced throughout the woman’s body. “how did she find out? i can practically see the fumes coming off her. his best friend! guy or girl that’s a huge blow, right?” running a hand through her hair, she shakes her head. “is that the wildest thing you’ve seen working today? because i swear you always have the best stories.” she glances on the clock on the wall behind him. “almost quitting time. are you free after?”

Adrian let out a yawn as he headed home from his closing shift from the library. His nose was in a book as he walked, not really noticing who he was passing by. Considering it was getting dark, it was probably not a smart thing to be reading, but since there was some light, Adrian chalked it up to not yet totally straining his eyes to see. Pausing under one of the street lights to read for a second, a thought occurred to him while he was halfway through a sentence: he had left his apartment keys at work. Adrian sighed loudly and shut his book. Without paying attention he turned around to head back and smacked right into someone walking in the opposite direction, dropping his book in the process. “Ow,” he groaned and rubbed his shoulder. Glancing up at the other person, he apologized. “Sorry. That was my fault. Wasn’t paying attention. Are you okay?”
even with the ring on her finger, alice still wasn’t a huge fan of the sun. a deep rooted fear runs through her that it might fail. not that she’s ever heard or seen a report of any magical accessory failing, but it still lingers. she tells herself she’s doing better being out for a walk in the park as the sun begins to set. it’s a step in the right direction. she’s lost in her own thoughts, a series of new slides she needs to analyze over the next few days. some of them show promise, but how much, she can’t be sure. so when a man bumps into her, she almost stumbles back. his quick apology makes her face soften. “don’t apologize. i wasn’t paying attention just as much as you. are you okay? i heard the ow. sometimes i forget how solid i am.” her eyes glance down at the book on the ground. bending quickly, she grabs it for him. “you dropped this. were you enjoying it?”

sitting up a little straighter, alice chuckles as she looks over at her friend. “i’m honestly glad you could carve out some time for me. i feel like i haven’t left the lab in weeks at this point.” she sighs a little dramatically before bringing the wine to lips. “how’s maya? i miss her. i always forget to text her. she always sends me emojis and i can’t figure out what they mean and i’m scared to google.” she glances at his food and wishes that she could consume it with some sort of added benefit. but she’s here for the company. she’ll always show up for the company. “have you been eating and resting enough, james? i worry about you.”

eyes lifting from the mug in front of her, alice breaks into a small smile. it’s one reserved for leon alone mostly. the cup in her hand warms her constantly cold fingers. not that it matters one way or another, but it allows her to feel human for a little bit. until the coffee grows cold or she finishes it. it doesn’t do much for her really, but the fact that her friend goes out of his way to try and tie her back means the world. she lights up a little as he nears. “well, well, well, if isn’t my favorite barista in all of nova pangaea.” she lifts her eyebrows and tries to combat the smile growing. “you’ve really outdone yourself this time.” she glances at a couple in the corner. “what were they arguing about? or is that strictly between barista and client?”
MEET ALICE SIMMONS
AGE: Thirty years old (104)
BIRTHDAY: September 1st, 1915
PREFERRED PRONOUNS: She/Her
OCCUPATION: Microbiologist at the Helios Project
PLACE OF BIRTH: Nashville, TN
NEIGHBORHOOD: North Valley
HAS LIVED IN ASTORIA FOR: 10 years
CHARACTER INTERVIEW
What are the reasons why you’re still living in Astoria? What makes it home to you?
Tucking a piece of hair behind her ear, Alice licks her lips before looking up. A shrugs follows before she finally answers. “Where else would I go really? Are some parts of the world better than others, sure, but…” She trails off, chewing on her bottom lip. “I make a difference here. I matter here. Or at least, it’s what I tell myself. The Helios Project… all the good the council does, where else would I find that? I wake up and I have a purpose. Each day, in and out, there’s something to do. Plus, we all understand each other here, more or less.” Fidgeting with her fingers, she looks down and back up. It’s hard to explain how Astoria’s home – more home than Nashville ever could be. Nashville was where she died and was reborn. It’s where she destroyed and consumed. It’s where she scared residents. Astoria doesn’t hold that weight. It’s welcoming – accepting. “The roof over my head. The lease in my name. The job I hold. The citizenship that’s now mine. All of those things make it home to me. I can lay my head down and feel safe.”
How would you describe your relationship with others? Are you close to your family?
“Look, I’ll be the first to admit that I need to get out more. But I’m usually busy. Work keeps me up and out. I don’t mind other people. How could I? I sorta need them to survive.” Not that Alice needs to interact with anyone anymore to feed. A simple hello at the Astoria Blood Center is all it takes for her to feed. An interaction with a small wave and she’s good to go for a few more days. Maybe a week if she pushes herself ( sometimes she does ). “But I generally like people. I try to go out a few times a month. It’s health to have some sort of social interactions.” The truth is that she’s terrified of the things she’s done. Her past isn’t squeaky clean. She knows not talking about it doesn’t make it go away, but it makes it easier to get through the days. A therapist would have a field day with her way of thinking, but she tells herself she doesn’t have time for that. It doesn’t matter either way. Everyone has skeletons in their closet. “Family? No.” A shake of her head as her voice goes quiet. “I don’t have family anymore.”
What’s something about your past you could share with others?
A smile crosses Alice’s features as she sits up a little straighter. “I was actually one of the first women to graduate with a microbiology degree from University of Tennessee. It was hard at the time. People didn’t want to even admit me to the program. I dealt with a lot of misogyny and threats. But I didn’t allow it to hold me back. I’d already wasted a lot of time not pursuing what I wanted, so when the opportunity came up, I fought for it. I don’t necessarily want to be remembered for that, but I’ll be happy knowing if I made it easier for any women who came after me.” She shifts forward in her seat, smile still plastered on her features. “Can I tell you something? I was smarter than my entire class and they hated it. Teachers tried to mark me down for cheating or having a male counterpart help me, but they could never prove it. Mostly because it wasn’t true. I still laugh when I think about it.”
Please elaborate on any violent circumstances you may have been involved with in the past.
Her face draws serious when the questions asked. The nervous ticks fade away and Alice almost goes sickly still. Breathing stops and she hopes it makes the interviewer nervous. A part of her wants them to be frightened so they move on, but another part wants to apologize. She doesn’t waver. “Turning into a vampire isn’t easy. It’s violent. Rebirth isn’t cleansing like some people will have you believe. It’s messy and ugly. I can’t remember a lot of it. I would rather I couldn’t remember any of it. But what good is experience if you erase it.” Her jaw goes tight and her fangs itch in her mouth. They always do when she gets like this. But her control has gotten better over the years. “I’m not proud of my first few years once I turned. I couldn’t control myself. I didn’t want to control myself. No one to show me the way and if anyone offered me guidance, I would have ignored it. I liked killing. I enjoyed it. The hurt and the screams…” She trails off then, fingers curling into her palms. The nails bite at her skin and she’s grateful for it. It reminds her that she’s still alive. “Can we move on please? I’d rather not linger on unpleasant memories. It’s over with now. Has been for a long time.”
What are your weaknessess and strenghts?
A sigh follows the question before she shrugs once again. “Is this one of those questions where I say my greatest weakness is how much I care?” She chuckles softly before running her hands through her hair. “I’m not social enough, first of all. I need to be better about that, but I’ve thrown myself into my work at the Helios Project. The more time I spend there, the closer I feel we could get to a breakthrough. I find it very hard to relax and unwind. I’m trying to be better about it, but you ever feel like you don’t deserve those things?” She clears her throat. “As for strengths, I’d like to say I’m intelligent. Not in a street sense, but science wise, I could go on for hours. I enjoy figuring out how something works from the most base of levels. I could spend days uncovering something new in that way. Although I’m not great with other people, I can garner a laugh from coworkers now and then. I’m fairly sure a sense of humor is still considered a strength. A creature of the night with a smile on their face.”
Your thoughts about supernatural beings.
“How incredible that we live in a world where so many different creatures can coexist peacefully. It blows my mind that it’s not just vampires. When I truly learned about Astoria and what it stood for, I couldn’t even fathom. I heard the rumors. I knew the stories. But it was almost like a fable. I’m sure I’d brushed past a witch or two in my travels, but I never knew. And now, I learn something new every day.” Alice feels her excitement growing as she talks. She’s practically bouncing in her seat. The way her fists unclench and her jaw relaxes. Her mind whips to the new subject glad to be off the previous topic. “I’d love to know more. It’s why I keep an open mind. I think overall, we haven’t learned everything we can yet. You can look to Mrs. Lacroix for further evidence of that. We haven’t unlocked the supernatural potential yet. What a blessing to live in Astoria where we can all live free from outside harm.”
