I don’t know shit about photography, but the person who took this shot must be given the highest award of them all.
this is breathtaking
Sherando Lake: I'll be back 👍
Spent the past four days in Maine. Before this I had an extremely painful past two weeks. My life is completely turned upside down and I am digging deeper into myself than I have in a long time. Writing, journaling, therapy and friends have been the only thing keeping me sane. Thank god I also have a boss who doesn’t judge me if I need to take a paperwork day instead of seeing clients. I have been very concerned about serving my clients well in therapy and feel that if I can’t do a good job that day, it’s better to reschedule. I know this is all really personal but I just want to be real. I think the worst of it is over and I’m entering a new phase of this. A much calmer place for sure. A trip is always a great way to get away from the situation. Coming home is the hardest part.

Shortly before I left for my Iceland trip I picked up my first videocamera, a GoPro and basically learned how to use it while on the trip. I stuck with the philosophy of just shooting whenever something interesting was happening and luckily, Iceland was so beautiful that it more than made up for my newbie skills and I was very pleased with the results. I came home and figured out iMovie as well and put together this music video to SSQ. I wanted to get this camera so I could start documenting my life through video just like people used to do back when videocameras first came out and boxes full of VHS tapes of birthday parties and singalongs became common then sadly died out. I hope to keep documenting things in this way and am glad that I was able to get started with this video.

Women’s Work: Reimagining “Blue-Collar”
26 images of tenacious, strong female loggers, welders, firefighters, miners and so forth challenging the idea of what we consider “women’s work.”
Moss covered lava field
Just a small selection from my Iceland photos now that we are halfway through the trip. We’ve seen all types of geological phenomenon due to the ongoing geothermal activity within the land here.

Plans for speakers bureaus of survivors willing to tell their stories are well underway, as is research to measure the effect of such testimony on audiences. For decades, mental health organizations have featured speakers with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and depression. But until now, suicide has been virtually taboo, because of not only shame and stigma, but also fears that talking about the act could give others ideas about how to do it.
“This is a real shift you’re seeing,” said Heidi Bryan, 56, of Neenah, Wis., who has been speaking for years about suicide attempts she made in the 1990s. “For people working in suicide prevention, they always told us not to talk about our own experience, like they were afraid to tip us over the edge or something. Honestly, we’re the ones who know what works and what doesn’t.”

Love that I work at a nonprofit where even upper management openly encourages staff to have "fun" and "crazy" times in their personal time. Of course, its always said offhand but at least you're made aware that having a fun lifestyle is openly accepted. I remember working for an agency where I leaked enough about myself to my coworkers that they knew that I have adventures/fun in my personal time (I think the conversation went like this: "Oh you don't watch tv? Then what do you do?!"). At some point later on, the manager was coming down on me for a minor lapse in timeliness of work and brought up my personal life, that maybe it was time for me to "get serious about my life". Suffice to say, it wasn't long before I quit that job. There are major differences in the work culture since there it was very profit driven and we were treated like work machines instead of people with needs. Obviously if we are serious enough to earn advanced degrees and do well at our job with human amounts of error, we are able to manage how much fun we are having. Maybe these profiteers would see that happy workers are also productive workers. No wonder my old job shut down not long after I left.

My amazing yoga studio had an open house this weekend with demonstrations of self-led Ashtanga done by none other than my fellow studio friends. It's funny but most of us just started learning Ashtanga when this place opened in the fall but now here we are, showing the neighborhood all we've learned in this short time. Not to mention, there was also a table outside on the flower covered street full of artisan breads, fruit salad and tasty snacks served for the rest of the party. So glad to have finally found my yoga practicing home after months of wanderin' (at Richmond City Yoga)
finally bottled the sleepytime tincture after combining valerian root, passion flower, peppermint, lemon balm and lavender flower in a jar with 80 proof alcohol for two months. you really don't need to let tinctures sit for that long but i kept getting sidetracked and figured it would make the tincture stronger anyways (by the way- this is my FIRST homemade herbal remedy so technically... i don't know what i'm doing) when i finally strained the herbs out and put the tincture into dropper bottles, i saw what a high herb to alcohol ratio there was and realized that this mix is probably really strong... it definitely made our kitchen smell like the tincture for the rest of the afternoon. two nights later, i realize i need it and am a little nervous to try it but went in head first. took a full dropper directly onto my tongue and next thing i remember is my alarm going off at 7:30am. it hit me at full force and i definitely was in REM land for the next seven hours without any hiccups. had a little trouble waking up but otherwise, felt fully rested and am so grateful! it definitely works and i don't think i need to even take as much as i did to fall asleep. the herbs themselves probably cost around $1.50 total (they came from the bulk herbs at the health food store) and over the years, i've tried everything to help my sleep and i've found tinctures to be by far the safest and most effective. now that i'm making my own, the cheapest too.
