you wanna see some badass shit from the early 20th century?? The LumiΓ¨re brothers created the first full color photographβ¦ in fucking 1903! So these dudes dyed potatoes (in red, blue, and green), mashed them down into just pure fuckinβ starch, and used these dyed potato starches as filters to block out/let in certain wavelengths of light. They coated one side of a glass plate with the starches and sensitized the other side with a mixture of gelatin and light sensitive materials (silver nitrate) and loaded these plates in their cameras.. This is a really simple explanation of the process and I may have missed some things A few of my favorite autochrome photos:
that last one is literally a LOOK
yes!
but lets not forget sergei prokudin-gorskiy, who developed a similar process in 1902, published in 1903 and then toured russia to take hundreds of color photographs:
AND the guy developed color slide processing as well. as a person fairly familiar with modern b/w processing at home, but never EVER stepping into color (negatives or slides) territory, iβd say, BAMF to the highest degree.Β
Here are a few more Prokudin-Gorskiy / Gorskii shots, and a reminder once again that these arenβt recently colourised BW images but original colour photos taken about 120 years ago. Many colourised pics donβt look this good. Some modern colour pics donβt look this good (as I know all too well. βDelete image Y/N? Y!β)

I'm coming to realize how vital it is to keep a running list of shit you did in the past few weeks so that you can participate in small talk. It's literally not anything to do with them being interesting at all it's just having Something to say to give people even the barest thing to hold on to. It's so you don't get into the "what have you been up to" "nothing much what about you" "yeah same" trap. Literally just say something.
What have you been up to? Um well it's getting warmer so I've been having to brush my cat every day.
Like no it's not that interesting of a thing to say. But now they can respond to it. They could say, man yeah it really is heating up, I've been trying to think of things to do inside more often. Or, oh you have a cat? What's their name?
Like. It's Something. All you need is Something. And if you're like me and your brain immediately goes blank upon entering small talk then keeping a list will help you remember things to say.

i do actually think people should try to use a word other than cabal
(For those unfamiliar with why, it was coined in reference to the Hebrew word kabbalah, "received tradition", and it's intentionally used by antisemites as part of their whole conspiracy theory.)
terrifying when you watch a movie or a show or whatever & youre like that was fun but it felt a little redundant they didnt need to hammer the point home that much & then you go online & theres thousands of people going that was so weird i did not get it what did that mean google.com ending explained please?

Anyone have any podcast recommendations? I tend to prefer a structure with cohosts, bonus points for hosts who are women, bonus bonus points for hosts who are queer women. Any sort of nonfiction topic honestly, I like learning about miscellaneous things,

An interesting game where you are presented with 10 artifacts from the MET. You have to place where the artifact is from and what time period it is from. Each artifact scores up to 10,000 points, and you lose points the further away your guess is and how far off in time you are. You can only play once a day. Thanks to @baebeylik for showing this to me.
Today I scored really well. Yesterday ... not so much.

I know everybody hates gen AI on here (fair, it's awful in a zillion different ways), but the quality difference between GPT and Claude is so fucking stark. You can really see that all the good engineers left OpenAI for Anthropic (to be clear, this is literally what happened, I am not making this up lol)
Unfortunately I think I am too full of myself for the current job market
