One of the ideas about gen AI that I'm currently toying with is that... It's not like there's *no* use for it. It's just that it makes things so easy that it rewards all of the worst human impulses, which is why, in practice, you end up mostly seeing people use it to turn out garbage.

But I'm also hoping part of this is that it's still *novel.* Lots of people are messing around with it to explore the hype, which will hopefully cut back when the hype cycle eventually dies.

And of course, the hype cycle is further fueled by the massive amounts of money being poured into AI right now. There is a lot of incentive for companies to try to bundle AI into their products right now, and the marketing focuses on how *everyone* should be using AI. Which is obviously nonsense.

Idk. I don't think gen AI is going to fully disappear, but I'm hoping in like 5 years it'll at least be less pervasive. Just gotta wait for the novelty to wear off and for the bubble to burst. Both of which I feel like might happen around the same time lol. We'll see!

#controversial posting hour I guess #gen AI is very helpful in some areas when it's implemented well #it is however currently devastating for the information environment as a whole #I think this is also part of why it's so polarizing #if you focus on one application it's very easy to walk away with a one sided conclusion #that said I ALSO have a much meaner anti-ai take but I'm still working on a way to word it #that doesn't make me sound like the most misanthropic person alive #you can see the bones of it in the first paragraph of this post though jshsks #talking tag
