so you did not so much fall in love as love tipped her chrome-crowned head into your lap, and the mechanical whirr of her hair as it slipped into place softened into something that sat still in your chest, rough and quiet and full, and you let it.
— Quinn Lui, from “every dream after,” published in Honey & Lime
To those who are losing a lot of their will to create in the wake of President Tyrant: Don’t let him and his orcs win. People NEED your books, stories, poems, paintings, jewelry, dolls, knitting, tapestries, vases, weaving, dishes, every creation that comes from your hands. Every creation is a punch back at the haters and the heartless. Every word puts hope or thought or dreams or solace or fire into those who read it. You become a different voice from the bullyraggers and the foolish; your ideals, wishes and convictions reach your audience, whether they are reading Dr. Seuss or James Joyce. You convey food for hope and imagination whether you realize it or not, and the most innocuous-seeming work gives those who partake of it something to go on with. Keep soldiering on. Comedian or philosopher, baker or glassblower, writer of tomes or fan fiction, you’re needed now more than ever.

i’ve spent a ridiculous amount of time on this because i kept getting caught in insomniac loops. i have about thirty drafts saved as different layers of the same document and i’m sure there are probably at least five earlier drafts that are better because i just got way too obsessive and worked on it too long and thought about it too much but anyway basically what i did was take one of anna’s poems and rearrange it into a new poem without losing or adding a single letter or period or comma or whathaveyou. i kept breaking up words and rearranging them and like i said, there are literally 30+ drafts of this because i’ve been playing with it off and on for about two weeks so this last version is a little hard to read maybe from all the disassembling and rearranging but i kind of like it that way and i’m also way too tired of staring at this fucking screen to clean it up right now so i’ll just leave it like it is. i might post some earlier drafts later just for the hell of it because it might be interesting to see the process in various stages maybe? i don’t know. i definitely think there were earlier versions that were probably better but i kept ending up with like, one fucking letter that had no home and next thing i knew, i’d taken the entire thing apart again and there were letters everywhere and it just became this ridiculous overworked mess but i also really enjoyed doing it and really like the idea of it so maybe next time i can maybe do the same thing but without the teeth-clenched, sandpaper-eyed, manic obsession. because that would be nice.

Do you ever wanna bond with someone so bad you’re like “damn i wish we were knights on a dangerous quest”
i’m ready to quit school and move to a little ivy-covered cottage in the countryside and do nothing but read and take walks in the woods all day
It’s taking me too long to learn the best way to love myself, but I’ll keep trying trying trying trying trying trying trying trying tiring trying trying trying trying tiring trying trying tiring trying tiring

Vera Rubin, did you ever wonder if dark matter weren’t made of women like you? Quietly doing 90% of the work of holding together the universe? Keeping it all from flying apart, just like a family matriarch?
— Rena Priest, from “Super Sacred,” published in Cosmonauts Avenue
you would suppose that a heart does not break quite like an old
dry branch, but i know better, don’t i? sometimes it does.
sometimes you have too much want even for two worlds to keep,
even if they share an ocean to hold all the gold that spills.

I wish someone had warned me about the quiet boys with soft eyes and hands, because they break your heart as easily as the tall, dark strangers the poets always talk about.
