ten years is time enough to miss your kid’s whole childhood, to whittle away at every relationship and connection you have outside prison. i think we’re so used to seeing 25-to-life sentences being handed down for even non violent crimes that we don’t really think of the actual sentencing process this way. anything less than a LIFE sentence means someone “got off too easily.” and i wonder what would change with our system if we changed how we viewed that.

A prison sentence of 6 months? or even a year? That derails your life so so much. It means losing your home (who can pay months of rent for a place you don’t live in?), losing a job even if your employer actually wants to keep you, losing a big chunk of your social support system, starting any education you were in pretty much from scratch, and a gap in your resume that your next employer will definitely ask you about. Which basically means every bit of stability you had in life is gone and you have to rebuild it all from scratch, while on probation and with added stigma. A 6 month prison sentence already means “We’re taking EVERYTHING you have and forcing you to start over with the label CRIMINAL”. That’s pretty fucked up.
